On the other hand, I am extremely racist against Nords in all ES games which is particularly weird since I actually am Norwegian!

Well that might be why ... they took an existing people and played on the worst stereotypes. Kind of a cheap shot really, but do like the Nords in TES.

Try it in real life and say "I'm just role playing for immersion"

This isn't real life. Its a game. No one is proposing or supporting actual racism. Just the chance to feel more deeply what your characters heritage or background mean in terms of the lore.

Right? What's the point of playing a smug Altmer if the people of Tamriel don't notice of react to my superiority?

Weird but I think I agree. A few lines of recorded dialogue sprinkled into npc random conversations could do wonders for player experience.

A few random encounters along the road similar to the campfire starting occurance might give players a chance to act on a race, class or sex based hypothetical.

Do you help intimidate a lowly argonian out of his goods? Do you accept the discount from the lecherous merchant ?

Do you offer the beaten red guard medical supplies with no kind of repayment?

I'm sure there are thousands of ways those single NPC encounters along the road might over chances for players to engage in thoughtful roleplay.
Of course this might be harder to program than a simple check for player race. If nord, play sound file 'you sir smell like goat droppings' if not play sound file 'cheering for no reason'. ;)

No racism, we should only hate each other in a game based on group, class or social status. Better yet remove all conflict and in Cyrodiil we all will hold hands and see who can love one another the most.

In all seriousness it's fairly annoying that other Orcs don't recognize me and tell me how outsiders like me wouldn't understand Orc ways.

The title is a little flame-bait, but the idea has been in other TES games. If we had a Morrowind-style system, we could even taunt people ... (that's how I got my best house in Balmora).

There is some racism in the game - actually, quite a bit in the EP. There are several quests that revolve around themes associated with racism. But as the OP suggests, these themes aren't reactive to the player.

As to Bethesda softening racism/sexism, I don't think it was a conscious decision to make their games more politically correct, I think it's just much easier to have NPCs react to the PC in a generic way.

I do wish there was a bit more of a unique reaction to my race. Something other than: "You'll make a nice pair of boots!"

The game is very racist. Just go play the Ali'kr desert (redguard homeland) zone. It's like a hate letter by Bethesda directed against black people. The redguards are made out to be completely stupid, superstitious and inept, letting zombies take over their land because their religion forbids them from defending themselves against the undead. Every outsider npc calls them out and this, in effect calling them ***, and the whole plot of the zone is about the Great White Hope (player) coming into Ali'kr to save them.

    Racist/sexism based immersion.... no thanks

Its kind of a hallmark of this game series. NPCs reaction to your character and action are already there. This just moves it more in line with what skyrim had.

Indeed it is mrskinskull didn't think you had it in ya but bravo i am insanely impressed and you have my support.

This is a brillant thread and i shall make sure this one stays alive. :D

I always thought red guards were more of a middle eastern inspired culture. Either way the races of ESO are fictional and may be inspired by actual cultures here and there. The ESO races have had their own rich history that informs their fictional views of other cultures. Many religions forbid certain actions. It helps to offer narrative capital and opportunity for player agency.

I think that it'd be proper for some Argonians to show animosity towards the Dumner, seeing as how the Dumner enslaved Argonains until the formation of the Ebonheart Pact.

Stress does to reveal the baser parts of our nature. So maybe more indifference and intolerance from NPCs is needed.

Superstitious people do crazy things to minority groups when the crops fail or a disease is spreading. So uhm. All of actual human history kinda disagrees.

Listening to the comments of the down trodden, whinging NPCs in the game does add immersion to the game. It's an explanation for why they can't save Tamriel themselves and rely on my heroic prowess.

Racism used in an effective manner is actually an excellent way to encourage anti-Racism. It's like holding up a mirror and when you don't like the reflection you see, you change.

Yup. I love the quests dealing with that history. So seeing it included in the list of possible NPC reeactions to players would be very immersive.

Doesn't necessarily lead to a better narrative :/ . Why the hell would you want to deal with something as mundane and irrelevant as sexism in a fantasy story? It gets tired pretty fast.

Interesting that you say that . Did you favor oblivion over skyrim? High fantasy over low? I really enjoyed the gritty low fantasy of skyrim and chaffed at oblivion's lotr shiney high fantasy.

But that's why its a discussion. Different opinions and all.
