How doth thou guild?

GeneralSethman
So if I'm new to mmo and don't play with an established guild how do I A) join into guilds and get high enough to actually use the privledges rather than just being considered a new source of gold? (I feel that most guilds don't trust new-comers because of all the bank thieving - yet there is no way to gain trust if I can't use the privledges)

B) how would I get other players interested and committed to a guild of my own making so as to actually use the positive things that a guild can provide, without falling into the same bank thief trap that makes it difficult for me to be a new-comer.

It just seems like a lot of catch 22ing and me being new to mmo id love to experience the game as fully as possible.
Advice?

Yeah, pretty much this. With a decent guild the way you get high enough to be granted privileges is by being a good member of the guild. Help people out, do group dungeons with guildies, have positive social interactions, etc. Having the privileges really shouldn't be your goal when joining a guild, though. You goal should be to find a group of people with whom you'll have more fun in-game than you would by yourself.

Most guilds have teamspeak. try getting into voice chatting and get to know people personally. Being active in guld chat as well is the best way for ppl to get to know you and begin trusting you. Help other players! build connections etc. not much different than building rapport IRL.

    B. don't invite random players to your guild. When you invite someone, don't leave them hanging. Check in on them and engage them in conversations. Usually you can get an idea if someone is genuine or a robot.

With all this said, bad things can still happen. Even to the largest most entrenched of guilds.

Some guilds require regular donations from their members. For guilds where that gold goes towards hiring a guild trader, I can understand it.

Joining guilds is all about personality fit. Some players just want to access the guild store so they can sell stuff and will never be on chat or make a contribution. Others will chat all the time, so much so you wonder if they're doing anything in game ... or if they're fishing. :) Others want to store their stuff in the guild bank - but honestly, I never count on storing stuff in any guild bank.

I belong to five guilds. Three are trading guilds and they require that I either list a certain amount of stuff in their stores or participate in a raffle. Since I sell a lot of stuff, listing things isn't a problem. I generally don't guild chat and rarely have anything to do with the people in the guild except to sell my stuff.

I just joined a dueling guild but haven't really found my place in that guild yet.

Finally, I joined - on a fluke - an "oldies" guild - made up of older players. I asked to join even though I was younger than most - if not all - of the other players (I knew one of the members). That guild is fun. We talk, we run groups, they tease me mercilessly, and we have a good time. It's a nice guild with good people. But I had to join a lot of guilds that were bad fits before I found a good one.

Trying to find a good guild fit is not unlike dating.

heh, I joined a small guild almost a year ago. I guess at some point the GM quit the guild and somehow I ended up as the GM (I never asked for it, and I'm unclear on exactly when it happened). None of the other members of the guild have logged in for over 8-9 months. As a result I've got my own private guild bank :D

I keep all of my stacks of crafting mats and bait in there. It's great.

Lucky you. Some time back, there was a player running around Glenumbra, trying to recruit people to their guild who "hated" the game and were getting ready to quit.

I laughed - then considered starting a guild myself ....
