Help a Noob out - terms, abbreviations and general stuff I wouldn't know otherwise..

TrevDavies
Hi guys.

I'm new to this sort of thing... However I'm loving it!! The one thing I struggle with though is all the terminology used on the forums and when reading up on the game... Like what the hell is a "Tank"?? Can anyone shed some light on some of the common terms and abbreviations used.. I'm sure I can't be alone on this...

Anyway thanks in advance :)

    May I recommend this fabulous thread:

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en-GB/discussion/136290/the-eso-slang-and-abbreviation-dictionary/p1

    It is the Slang and Abbreviations Dictionary the community put together (started by Neizir) and it is supper helpful.

    OK, I'll start off with a few.
    • DPS: Damage Per Second - this is a role where the player is focused on causing as much damage as possible as quickly as possible
    • DD: Damage Dealer - see DPS
    • Tank: this is a role where the player is focused on drawing aggro from the biggest threats and using CC to try to protect the other players as much as possible, while being able to sit there and take all of the damage coming in towards him.
    • Healer - this is a role where the player is focused on keeping the rest of his team alive by healing them
    • Aggro: this is when an enemy is drawn to attack you - you can draw aggro with a taunt skill, or just by doing damage or firing off a combat ability
    • CC: Crowd Control - this is an ability that slows down, stuns, or roots enemies in order to restrict them and make it more difficult for them to get at their targets and/or keep them in a particular area
    • Taunt: this is a skill that, when used, forces the enemy affected to attack the player who activated the taunt rather than attacking anyone else
    • Mob: this is an enemy non-boss NPC
    • Trinity/Holy Trinity: this is the 3 player roles: DPS/Healer/Tank

    There are a bunch of others, but that's what immediately comes to mind for me.
    Caius Drusus Imperial DK (DC)
    Bragg Ironhand Orc Temp (DC)
    Neesha Stalks-Shadows Argonian NB (EP)
    Falidir Altmer Sorcr (AD)
    J'zharka Khajiit NB (AD)
    Isabeau Runeseer Breton Sorc (DC)
    Fevassa Dunmer DK (EP)
    Manut Redguard Temp (AD)
    Tylera the Summoner Altmer Sorc (EP)
    Svari Snake-Blood Nord DK (AD)

    ok I' ll start with the roles.
    tank= a guy or girl who's job in group content is to control the biggest nastiest thing on the screen and stop it from killing other members of their group. They do this by having a taunt skill active on the creature this makes it attack them. they then mitigate the damage so they don't die (there are a few ways this can be done typically with hvy armour and a shield).they may also debuff the creatures which means using a skill that will weaken it in some way for example lowering its armour.

    healer/heals
    keeps group alive also good healers will ''buff'' the group which means using a skill that adds to the groups stats etc for eg mystic orbs which provide magika for group members. when not doing that they may contribute to damage but this is secondary.

    dd/dps
    These are abrevietions of damage dealer and damage per second in a group context they mean the same. Its these guys and girls jobs to do the maximum amount of sustained damage they can to kill creatures.they can also help by adding buffs to the group or debuffs to the creatures. they sometimes use meters to measure how much damage they are doing aqd will use their skills in a certain order to maximise their effect this is called a rotation. A good dps will be able to maintain his rotation while avoiding damage allowing the healer to focus on healing the tank or one of the other aforementioned tasks.

    Other common things

    LFG =looking for group for ...
    LFM = looking for member for ...
    PUG = a stranger invited to a group to do content
    AOE= area of effect skills that do thier damage in an area dd's will use them on trash mobs and the group will try to not stand in ones cast by creatures
    Mobs = creatures enemies
    Trash mobs = groups of lower tier enemies
    adds= some bosses spawn ADDitional enemies during a fight

    dungeon /trial abbrvs

    coa= city of ash
    dsa= dragonstar arena
    coh= crypt of hearts
    aa= atherian archive (trial)
    hrc= hel ra citadel (trial)
    SO= sanctum ophidia (trial)
    if you see them prefixed with a v that means veteran mode
    if you see a trial prefixed with HM that means hardmode

    hope this helps

    There are healing spells? Boy I am dense. I can't even figure out how to use a healing potion off of the wheel. I keep having to go in to inventory to do it and that takes time where I am still getting hit.

    yes there is a weapon line restoration staff that is dedicated to just this also some class skills will provide either self or group healing notably the templar as they have a whole line dedicated solely to this

    So glad you asked

    Thanks for the link, but I wonder, how is "Dark Age of Camelot" the "Spiritual Predecessor" or ESO?

    Because some of the devs came from there.
    Some also went to Camelot Unchained which I am anxious to see when it launches.

    Because @ZOS_MattFiror came from DAOC. Some of the artwork/design of keeps in Cyrodiil show some influence from DAOC. If only he would've brought a lot more with him.

    I'm quite anxious to see what CU can bring to the table as well.
