Silly question, but, does anyone else have this combat issue?

I'm really enjoying TESO, but I'm having an issue with hand to hand combat. I can be standing right in front of an enemy and I cannot hit them at all (they can hit me though!). If I take a step back or to the side they start to glow again, but it just seems silly. Why would I stand 4 feet away from my enemy and slash at them with my knives? What am I, an orangutang with 5' arms? Doesn't seem to be an issue with spells or ranged weapons, but this is driving me a bit nuts with hand to hand.

Am I doing something wrong?

Where is your reticle? Depending on if you in first person, or depending on how close your camera is while in third person... your reticle is actually to the right of your character, the reticle needs to be on the mob.. not your character.

    Yes, it's weird.

If that's not your issues, hmm, then I'm not sure.

Like MissBizz says, go into settings, camera, and adjust your reticle (Horitonal/Vertical offsets) until the game's hitzone matches up with your hit zone. (Where you feel like your hits should be connecting.)

Beyond that, distance approximation is odd, to say the least.

Melee distance reach is much closer than it appears. You'll find this out the first time a bear bites you from what seems like 10 feet away.

If the mob is literally right on top of me so that our hit boxes overlap (I still don't understand why mobs are able to do this - I thought collision was supposed to keep it from happening) I have the same issue, as I can't get the targeting reticle to get the mob without moving away.

Targeting is all but FUBAR in this game. Just today I submitted a bug report because when a lootable corpse is on the ground, the targeting system selects it instead of a live mob even though the reticle is not pointing at the corpse. You will also hit a snake, frog, spider or mouse 100% of the time if it happens to come anywhere near an enemy. Among other issues...

I keep seeing the word "mob" and I am not sure what everyone means.

I was talking about more of a 1 on 1 session with an enemy. If there's more than one, you at least target somebody in the group, which is fine.

I am more used to games where you can target your enemy but TESO doesn't seem to have anything like that.

A mob is a non-boss NPC enemy. I really don't know why a single one is called a mob... Confused the heck out of me when I started playing.

The word Mobs is used here for pretty much any enemy npc.

If you're playing on console I don't think you have those offsets. (correct me if wrong there but I thought I'd seen that complaint)

ESO doesn't have hard targeting. On PC we have a Tab target but it's still not a true hard target.

MOB in MMO stands for "Monster, Man or Beast" basically any NPC. It's one of those odd MMO terms that is kind of counterintuitive, as the term stands for a group in normal English, but can apply to an individual in the MMO/RPG world.

I'm pretty sure it is short for mobile asset.

"The term is properly an abbreviation rather than an acronym,[4][2] but backronyms for "MOB" such as "monster or beast," "mere ordinary beast" and "mean old ***" have also been coined."

    Interesting. Thanks for the link.

Correct. On PS4 I looked for a way to center my character.... no go. As well, never looked, but I haven't seen a tab target button on any controller maps I have looked at (nor have I found it through my tried and true method of button mashing on console until I figure out whatever everything does)

Yeah, and it seems the larger the creature, the smaller the hitbox, for some reason.

Quite irritating when you can't seem to hit the spider the size of a minivan or the 20 ft tall armored troll in front of you, yet your projectile will happily exit sideways instead of at the enemy right in front of you.

I'll be darned. I did not know that. (And I've been gamin a long time.) Just always assumed it referred to the fact that enemies usually came in groups or Mobs, and a single, by default got referred to as a mob.
