Love this game, only have one major thing that's irritating the heck out of me. WHY are we using live account names?!???!
Mine is *** and no I'm not paying Microsoft 10$ to change it, not that anything would be available anyway.
What's is the point in even naming your character if it dosnt appear anywhere?
  • ZylnorWrath_ESO
i really dont get it either, it makes no sense that we need to even name are characters when making them when 90% of the time we or any other players barely see it. it just useless in my opinion especially when we cannot use names over and over again. we are rarely going to see them in game then either make it so we can use the same names, or change it so we are actually using are characters name!

Its the exact same way on the PC. The only time you see the actual character name is in zone chat. You guys dont have that because its all voice. In guild tho I am listed by my acct name and not character name. So on pc also noone really ever sees your character name.

It's not even about rp-ing (for some it is I guess)

I, like many others, made my psn years and years ago but kept it cuz of the games I had on it and other progress. But I don't really like my psn anymore and hate that ppl see it under my name.

I took time to research a name and put a lot of effort into it and it's practically useless. (Forum name isn't character name btw lol)

And yea a lot of psn are ugly and should never see the light of day. (Xr4g3xl337X)

I personally am fine with it how it is. If they were to do anything I would want something showing both names. I have friends with pretty good xboxlive names which actually could be snapped up by people if given the option.

With how console players are and that 99.99999999999999999999999999999% of games use your gamertag I feel if someone with the ESO name just like theirs was acting stupid they could be the ones reported to Microsoft and while nothing normally happens if that person in ESO is spouting off insults and raciest remarks they could get a bad rep.

In the end I don't feel its worth development time as while I haven't play on MAC for the last 12 months I have read through the year about all the potential content releases that have been delayed. I would much rather have imperial city than a custom name in ESO and I would bet a large majority ingame would as well. I am more surprised that people thought that the gamertag wouldn't be your primary identifier.

No, it isn't the same at all. You see character names in zone chat, in group and when looking at people directly. Basically, all interactions with strangers use character name. And it's great because when I run around, I see Blood-On-His-Scales, Svari Strong-Shield and Aeland Gemleius instead of random combinations of immersion-breaking letters and numbers.

It's because ALL other console mmos allow you to use the character name.

I'm am more surprised you don't realize the character names are still tied to account names and thus reporting behavior is affected zero by this.

They should stay with the gamer tags, that way no matter what character they are using, you still know who they are and its their live/psn name to make it easier to sent messages using the apps, finding them on the field, and reporting players like the other dude said. For me, I like my gamer tag an if I make a new character everyone still knows who I am. Not hey guys it's me and say ur other characters name, to know who you are for ur now character. I like PVP, and I like being the same make on the battlefield so everyone still knows who I am no matter what character I decide to use

I have to agree. I spend time actually naming my characters (I've created a family with the surname of Rey), yet, all I ever see are the PSN tags, and, let me tell you, alot of them are stupid and even more of them are just plain boring.

What would be so wrong with having the character name appear above the in-game toon, they are tied to your id anyhow, and it certainly would be a whole lot more interesting that "gig_cop274732" as an example.

Don't really mind not being able to have multiple characters with the same name though. I can understand that. At least it lets me recycle the name if I delete the character from the server, as long as I wait for the servers to update.

The only good thing about seeing those names is you can weed out the kids...grown people don't alternate upper and lower case letters. ;)

I'm hoping that if people keep beating this dead horse to a pulp then Zos will finally change it.

    Uh no....

If my xboxlive gamertag is vampireprince and someone else uses vampireprince as their ESO character name and I go directly to xbox.com to report a player or look up the gamertag to report it would not report the correct person......

I 100% understand if you report in game but I think its less likely someone uses in game reporting and more likely someone uses the xbox dashboard reporting functionality. For instance when I want to report someone in Halo or COD or Madden I don't go to the publisher or in game to report I just pop online or go to the xbox dashboard and look up the gamer tag to report directly on their gamertag card.

I only suspect that people use xbox.com and the dashboard report more because 100% of the friends report this way and are non-pc gamers. I would never personally look in the game to report anyone unless I happened to stumble across the feature but that could just be me and my friends...?

You are very wrong about this.

About what? What is wrong with this?

If we could create an ESO character with any name like on PC this is what would happen:

1.) Someone gets an xbox live gamertag of VampirePrince
2.) ESO is released and I choose to have my character named VampirePrince
    3.) I am a jerk to someone
4.) That someone goes to xbox.com or looks up the xbox gamertag on the dashboard and reports VampirePrince
5.) VampirePrince (gamertag person) has now been reported NOT the ESO person who has a character named VampirePrince

or are you saying no one does this? Even though that is exactly how I report anyone and everyone else that I know personally reports people...?

As a note if you are saying today this is wrong you are correct BECAUSE we don't show character names we show gamertags.

There needs to be a way to see both Gamertag AND character name. I see no point in even having a character name if it's never used or seen.

@nastuug. I would but have you ever tried creating a live account lately? I played around with it to see what was available and literally nothing is besides extremely weird combinations of words or numbers and letters.

You have to remember this isn't competing with one game community for a name, your competing with everyone who's ever signed up for an Xbox live account, I can't even imagine how many that is

I second this though I think I should have the ability to choose to just see other character names if I wish - or toggle and see gamertags if i wish.

This way I choose my experience but can check a gamertag if I want to.

If one had to be locked I'd want to see character names - and if these are unique then a lookup in options to see gamertag could be an option.

Immersion is messed up and annoys the heck out of me too though. Let's keep pressing the zen guys - they're smart and I'm sure they'll listen.

You must be trying common names then as I just checked out of curiosity and mdhammond, nastuug and Vigarr are all available. I bet some of my character names are available as well and none of my names over the years have required any xX or numbers in them.
