we discovered we couldn't group for any of the main story quests, or the Fighters Guild quests, or the Mages Guild quests. We were forced into solo-only play.

My spouse and I took a slightly different path. We didn't like the 'solo' idea, so we would go with a pair of characters, and figure 'heck, this not-being-able-to-see-you' is due to this all taking place in a Dragon Break. So we do things like "wait till I get to that corner" and "do you see some scamps on the left down there" and so on.
Taking serious liberties with crossing the fourth wall and all that - but it makes the game more enjoyable for us.
I think the problem is that what most old time scrolls players actually wanted was an scrolls coop game, or a scrolls group game.
