Need help with Sorcerer Tank

AcidGrenade
AcidGrenade
Soul Shriven
Let me start off by saying I am new to ESO and to online gaming period, so please be patient with me. Thank you

I just bought the Explorers Pack of ESO and I would really like to build a Sorcerer Tank. My vision is to run up, summon some fat nasties and start hacking people down with a great sword as a High Elf. Is this plausible? If so, I could really use some advise broken down Barney style for me. Im a solo player if that makes a difference.

Plausible? in terms of leveling, most of the combinations would be viable. Endgame? its not really optimal.

However, since you did state you are a solo player, GO FOR IT. Get right down to it and go crazy. Just some general tips though before you start:

    1) As you level, you want to level your all your class skills and your weapon skills. I usually put 1 class skill from each tree and two weapon skill for both my active bars. eg - Shattering Prison | Endless Fury | Velocious Curse | Destructive Clench | Wall of Elements. This helps with leveling each of your class tree and weapon. I usually maintain this throughout the whole course of leveling unless i find that i need to change up my bar due to grouping, soloing Dolmens, etc

    2) Level all your Guild skill lines. All of your guild skill lines are amazing and will have a lot of synergy with your class / weapon skill lines. eg - Flawless Dawnbreaker, an ultimate from the Fighter's Guild that will passively increase weapon damage when slotted.

    3) Dont just mesh all your abilities together. Form a synergy, know your abilities and have a rotation of sorts so it becomes part of your 'clicking movements'. When you know your abilities well, you then will inadvertently focus on the battle on screen, rather than focus on what to press. There is a reason why there are only 5 active abilities and one ultimate. You dont spend time watching CDs and buttons. You are more aware of your surroundings and be a much better player for it.

    4) Armor plays a huge role, weapons an even bigger one. Choose one that synchronizes really well with your gameplay, be it a 2hander high elf sorcerer warrior or a resto staff wielding Orc Templar. Read up on all the weapon skills before making your choice or better yet, tryout multiple weapons throughout your leveling experience. Its alright to be fully maxed out on one weapon by the time you are lvl 30, then change weapons and restart the process. Learning new gameplay is far more rewarding and much more enriching. plus, you get to have choices upon reaching endgame since maxing out levels mean it sticks with you till you delete that character.

I'm sure there are more tips but these are really just general tips that you might want to consider. Hope this helps!

    cheers!

It sounds like what you want to build is a stamina DPS, rather than a strict tank. Either way, I think you can achieve what you want, though the DPS route will likely be more sustainable at endgame.

    Tanking:

For tanking, one of the main things you need is a good self-heal, which, sadly, Sorcerers lack. Stuff like Dark Deal and Critical Surge, while technically ways to heal yourself, aren't reliable burst heals. It's true that Nightblades also don't have a burst heal, but they get around this by having constant streams of health coming in from enemies. That typically means that a good NB tank doesn't really lose health at all (I've seen some great NBs that never seem to die).

One way around the lack of heals is to pump up your armor. Get it right up to the hard cap. High stamina reserves and damage mitigation will further ensure that you stay alive. As a High Elf, you will naturally have more magicka, so use that to your advantage. Use Encase and Daedric Mines to control enemies. A nice bonus of doing that is one of the passives in that skill tree, I forget what it is, heals you for a small percentage every time you cast a Dark Magic spell. If you can get your crit up, that would be great too, as Critical Surge will proc more often.

I honestly have never built a Sorcerer tank, though I did play with one a couple nights ago. The above is more general. Tbh, writing that, I kinda wanna build one now...

    DPS:

I was questing in Craglorn, the highest level PvE zone, a little while ago, and all of us in the group were max level VR14s, except for one, who was a VR11 Sorcerer 2H stamina DPS. Man, that guy could tear through enemies like paper, AND he seemed to lose less health than others. I never asked about his build, but he was wearing Bound Armor, probably the stamina morph too. He didn't use any pets, though, it was just him.

When I was messing around on the test server, I did create a magicka DPS build with pets. It was a very solo-friendly build, with good damage, and good sustain. The main way I stayed alive is with shields. You can survive a ton of damage by stacking as many as you can.

2H is probably your best bet, and is my favorite DPS weapon. Brawler, morph of the first skill, gives you damage shield for each enemy you hit. With enough stamina/regen, you can stand in the face of 10 enemies and literally not lose any health at all. Wrecking Blow, morph of Uppercut, is an awesome single target damage dealer, and Executioner, morph of Reverse Slice, is my favorite execute in the game.

If you do go the stamina DPS route, remember that Weapon Damage, Weapon Critical, and max stamina are your friends. The higher you can make them, the harder you'll hit. Focusing on stamina is always a good place to start, since more of it means more damage. Item sets like Hunding's Rage and Ashen Grip will help get you more damage and crit, plus they're craftable.

I hope that helps some, and sorry for the wall of text.

TL;DR: To answer your question, "Is it plausible?", I'd say yes. There's a lot to think about, but for solo play, it can work.

likewow777 thank you for breaking down the classes and terms for me. Im definitely appreciative for all the info. I have some buddies that also want to start playing as well. is there a site you can reference for me that breaks things down the way you did for the tank and DPS?

Whoever said it wasn't plausible needs to take a look at Deltia.

OP, I'd suggest going to youtube, and typing in "Deltiasgaming" and seeing what he has for a sorc tank. I know they are very viable, and with their AOE and such, pretty fun.

Thats good advice and I myself follow some of his builds online, typically the stamina ones. However, I'm a firm believer of making your own builds and testing it yourself instead of following other builds. Take inspiration from the vids and countless forum topics but at the end of the day it is your own character and your own reaction time.

I know for a fact that I dont have deltia's reaction time and with being in the far east, latency can be such an obnoxious beast.

Yeah, like others are saying, Deltia's Gaming on Youtube is a great resource for builds, for all classes. At the very least, it's a good place to start. You can then tweak things to suit your playstyle.
