one reason why they make it somewhat difficult to sell your wares to the masses if you don't have a trading guild or 5 is to combat the RMT'ers. It is not likely to change.

the other has to do with being on megaservers. guild wars 2 having a universal auction house meant there was no economy at all - it was flooded with everything and all being sold at vendor prices. the only way auction houses work is if they are on a small scale, either delineated by server cluster or in the case of this game - zone.

Not sure about the consoles but on the PC, blue motif books sell in the 250 - 300 gold range ...
