Yea I sorta skipped reading the tutorial and have gotten quite frustrated with the lock pick system, so can anyone give me a simple explination .

Hold down the button (jump button on console I think) Right trigger (corrected below) until your controller starts to vibrate..

Let go. Move over to the next cylinder, repeat. Over and over. It's random how far each cylinder needs to be pressed down...

A video would likely help a lot better though :/ Or just start a new character and do the tutorial ;)

If you're PC.. hold down left mouse button until you start to hear it rattle and can see it shake.

It is RT on the Xb1. You press it in, and you will feel it move a little bit as the pin goes down. When it starts to really vibrate, that is the lock point. Your skill is to stop the pin in that lock point zone. It is easy with practise, and I think as your skill gets better, it will be easier to stop on the lock point zone.

Once it clicks (heh) you'll never have an issue again. There isn't a lock I can't pick and rarely do I break a pick. Once you "get" the mechanic it'll seem really easy. Lots of good advice here. Try the listening, looking at the pins, and looking at the springs. Once you find what works for you, you'll be good.

I watched a video on it on you tube and it made so much more sense and it made it way easier after that.

    My way....
...hold until the tumbler rattles/fails....remember location...2nd try release at vibration start point where it will lock into poisiton...move to next tumbler.
There is only 4-5 set position for the tumblers.
Once you know what length the tumbler must be for each level ...the vibration pinpoints which level to use.
You get used to it after a while once you know the fixed tumbler lengths.
As long as you lock on with the 2nd attempt for each tumbler you will have enough time.

Look at the Springs, not the pins. The Springs start to vibrate before the Pins do (not sure when the controller starts to vibrate). That is what finally did it for me on the PC.

I didn't pay attention either but what works for me is holding down the button until the pins/springs start to shake then release...it has to be the precise moment they move so remembering the spot it happens is key.

It's not really random. The pins stop at only three places about 1/4, 1/2, 3/4. Watch for the wiggle and slow down. I am not quick at it either and and never even try more than an intermediate lock. I wish we had the locks from Skyrim or a nice open spell but it is what it is.

You know, since launch I've been looking at the pins, and it didn't take long for me to get to the point where I only ever fail to pick a lock or break a pick if I'm really not paying attention to what I'm doing. I just recently started looking at the springs instead of the pins, though, and you're right: it's easier that way.

It's also helpful to know that there are only three possible stopping points for the pins. About a third of the way down, halfway down, and all the way down. Once you learn to find these three spots, it becomes much easier.

Sheesh. This is as bad as Oblivion. I give up. I can't pick a lock for my life. Funny - in Skyrim I could pick Master and Expert locks at level 1 without a problem.

    I hate myself.

I find the ESO lockpicking waaaay easier than the Skyrim lockpicking (and I didn't find the Skyrim lockpicking particularly difficult).

I actually found skyrim lockpicking tedious and frustrating. Funny how people are wired differently.

I could pick all the locks in Skyrim but couldn't pick any in Oblivion. Every new character I started in Oblivion made her first objective to be able to open very hard locks with an open spell. It was better that way anyhow. It wasn't illegal to cast a spell nor to go inside an open building so spells were better. :)
