Why are helmets so eh?

I don't think I've really played any of the ES games and thought, hey, I'd rather see the helmet than my characters face.

Maybe it has something to do with the removing of hair when adorning such armor, but I normally just play with my helmet toggled off.

How about everyone else? I've seen people run around with them on, but I can't really stand the look on my character.

On PC/MAC we have an addon that hides helmet when not in combat shows it when in. To bad that should of been in options for you guys.

Well, to me it wouldn't matter - I want to see my characters faces - but I like the idea of a auto-toggle for battle - that I would def use.

By "You guys" I am not included in this, as I as well use that addon, as I am a PC user, and as I said, I have my helmet normally togged off.

I always play with helms off. I'm a snob I guess or maybe it's a female thing idk, but some helms that are supposed to be "epic" are just flat out fugly (imo) like Valkyn Skoria, Wise Mage (I think), others....not nearly as bad as the Skyrim horn helms

For me it depends on what I'm doing... if I'm stealing peoples gold pouches I am wearing Crafty Larissa's outfit. And when I'm crafting it's either the blacksmith or chef's suit. When I'm fighting back the Daggerfall Covenant or Ebonheart Pact I'm wading into my foes in a full suit of Imperial Plate with an Aldmeri Helm ;)

I mainly feel that Dunmer heavy Helmets need some love. They look like an accident of medieval helmeting with a modern day motor bike design. And I know they tried to capture the Skyrim feel. But... on that one it didn't work that well... I love the other helmets.

So much for my opinion ;)

Mostly it´s helmet off. The fact that I like only a few of the helmet designs adds to that.
It´s a shame we cannot craft the low level appearances with higher material tiers...

I haven't found any helms that I really love to see displayed on my character, so I keep the display of it off. Thankful for the protection, but not so much interested in seeing the look of it.

It depends on which armor set Im wearing.
My solo pvp set has the Dwemer Light hood which looks pretty cool so I dont hide the helmet.
My group pvp set has the Blood Spawn head which looks bad on my light armor sorc so I hide the helmet.

If you want a cool looking helmet try to get the Ebon Helmet or Wormcult/Necromancer hood.

It´s a matter of personal taste, but I like the Redguard light and medium helmets (below level 36) and the Nord heavy helmets. But other than those, helmets mostly look bad.

Redgard medium helm at 42 .... OMG I was horrified. Immidiately deconned it.

On the other hand, Goblin Girl insists on wearing her full (primal or babraric? - its the one with those godawful horns that you see way too much in goblin lairs) helm at all times; even while forging, snacking and swimming. How she hasn't drowned yet, I'll never know.

My orc/tank goes back and forth between heavy (for armor) and medium (for criticals) but will keep the helm showing when he's wearing heavy - because he likes the nord/horns/thing. It goes really well with the bosmer heavy pauldons (the monster skulls). And his lady likes the look.

My spouse and I also run a pair of orc hotties; back before we figured out the darn toggle (so much of ESO is NOT intuitive) we would just not wear helms unless it was a particularly tough delve.

When one spends over 15 min working on their characters face in character creation it might seem silly to hide it behind a mask... Perhaps the helms should be redrawn without face shields? I dunno... I tried to have a helm viewable for the first 15 levels but got frustrated I couldn't see my character faces...

Yeah, that one is ugly as hell (like all of the Redguard medium armor from 36+). What I don´t get is why they have good or at least ok helmets at lower levels, but once you hit 36 (dwarven, full leather, spidersilk) it´s time to always hide the helmets.

The Khajiit helms (light and medium) half the lil' ear placements at completely separate locations. Apparently, just wearing a helmet can change Khajiit anatomy.

And yeah, most of the helmets just kind of look... weird. Not awful, just weird.

From a RP standpoint the auto on for combat makes sense. You would not walk around in a helmet being half deaf with limited vision while exploring or going about your business in town. Plus it's heavy and it's hot. You put the thing on for battle.

I've actually have metal helms I wear for LARP, reenactment, and re-creation fighting and battles. Once the battle is over almost everyone will "pop their tops".

Um sort of accidentilly when my Orc got his first set of medium armor (had been tanking with heavy - wanted to explore some critical bonus bennies) the Almer that made it for him made him a Khajiit helm. But he's this huge mountain of a guy.

So according to his willowy breton wife, with it on, he looks like a giant teddy bear.

I really like some of the helmets, but not others. The Imperial heavy helm is the primary reason why my main is an Imperial. It's like a cross between a Corinthian-style helmet (which I've always thought were the coolest looking helmets in all of history, ever since I first saw them when I was a kid) and a Roman legionnaire's helmet. I also like the Dwemer heavy helm a lot, and I like a number of the lower level ones that show your face.

At higher levels, though, I'm more likely to use the hide helmet option, because I do generally like to be able to see my character's face, and the higher the level of the helmet, the more likely it is to cover up the face. If it's a helmet that I particularly like, though, I'm OK with covering up my character's face.

I agree with seeing my characters face, as long as it covers up the hairline, I've actually made some of my characters bald or have mowhawks just to make sense when the helmet decides to remove your hair.

helmet off. I didn't agonize for 20 minutes on my character's face just to have it hidden by blah helmets. It would be better to have more open-face helmets. The kind of helmets I see high-level characters wearing would mostly get you killed due to low visibility anyway.
