Is there invisible "auto grouping"?

Hi folks!

I recently stood semi-afk at some Group Boss to wait for some players helping me slay it.
It's been one sorcerer with a pet (the hostile mob, not the player helping).

I returned from AFK when he was already in fight and has slain the main boss. I could hit his minion with two little attacks before this one dropped also to death.

I didn't get any loot, as I haven't been attacking the main boss and I guess the minion just didn't drop for me. But I've got the achievement and the Boss Icon went white colored, so I completed it.

So I wonder: Have I got the achievement because I was involved of slaying one forgetable creep in that Boss Area or did it auto group with the stranger, as I stood quite near the boss camp?

If there is no auto grouping, why? I often have the problem that when 10 players stand around a camp I can't harm them fast enough to participate in the fight. But I also don't want to wait half an hour just to be sure that I've slain all of them.
I played Warhammer Online, where you automatically have grouped with all near players when you engaged a boss area - as long as you haven't been in a group before.

I think this feature would not break the game, as many will fear now, because ...
  • AFAIK you get worse loot when looting the same boss again and again and again
  • even if someone use this mechanic to "leech" XP, he would miss many other character progresses
  • people who want to grind will grind

Trollwut, direct answer: No, there is no auto-grouping for world bosses. You got credit for putting in a few hits on one of the minions that was part of the achievement.

Auto-grouping is horrible. You know how it sometimes happened in quests? I'd be on the same floor as the quest boss, but in a different room down the hallway, and I got completion when someone else killed him. I walked in only to see a dead body. I'd get completion for items put on the altar by somebody else, a complete stranger. These were some of the most disappointing experiences I ever had in ESO. They took my quest away and completed it for me. I didn't even do anything. It sucked. I don't mind sharing quests with my group, but definitely not with strangers, so I don't want any area auto-grouping in place for world bosses. For one, it allows you to get XP for doing exactly nothing, two, grouping decreases XP above two people, so leechers harm legitimate players.

Rosveen has got the right of it.. It seems that for some quests, and world boss events, you only have to be near the area to get the completion.. It's kinda annoying with world bosses, but its a major P.I.T.A when it happens during a quest, especially since that in some of them, the quest end boss will simply not spawn again so that you could at least get to slay him with your own hands before leaving.. This is one of the major issues that I wish that ZOS would look into when they get the time after console release

I don't think it actually happens with world bosses, though. I sometimes arrived only to see someone else finish up, but didn't get completion.

I think the minion kill may be what got you the boss credit. I killed a boss once expecting the achievement to pop and it did not; it did not come up until I located and killed the minion that I had missed somehow. So I think they must be tied together for the achievement, but maybe each person involved only has to get a hit on one as long as they both end up dead by someone's hand.

I have experienced the quest completion issue where some random person in my instance goes through the doorway or around the corner first and completes the objective and by the time I get there, there's nothing left to see or do. I really hate that since it makes me see other players as obstacles that I have to race to the quest objective rather than as allies and potential friends.

I don't think there's hidden grouping, as such. Just a rather relaxed requirement on what involvement is necessary to be awarded completion / credit.

Back at launch there was a real problem with bots crowding around quest and dungeon bosses, insta killing them before genuine players could land a blow and get credit. Perhaps they relaxed the requirements on involvement / contribution as a result and then never set it back now that there's a lot less bots in the game.

Twice, recently, I have approached Overland World Bosses just a bit too late to get a shot in, and did not get credit for the kill, even though they fell almost on top of me when they died. So, there is no "grouping" in that case.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
