✭✭✭✭✭There are containers out in the world that will have these and they are not owned. I found one once in a Burned Crate in a burned out building. Knapsacks where mobs usually are will have them also, along with furniture and urns in dungeons.
However for the most common farming areas for motifs, you have to steal them. Which is why the price on Motifs is climbing right now. 3/4 weeks ago, Blues were going for 80 to 150. Now, just a few guild stores have them at 250, where most list them at 300 to 500, and even more. Purples, 15 to 25K for Non Deadric, and 30 to 35K for Daedric before, now I see the lower end Purples going for 30K to 40K. I have not seen a Daedric listed recently, but not looking for that one either.
This when the Guild stores even have any Motifs listed. The available stock on these have plummeted in just a few days. Not sure if that is players hording them in anticipation of price increases or they are just that rare now. I usually found a motif a day on my mules. This weekend, I only found two blues with a large amount of mule activity.
Note, Laundering a Motif just costs you the base price, so 9 or 13 gold.Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

What I meant is, knapsacks in towns, they won't have Motifs. Recipes, maybe, but no motifs.
I found a motif once in a knapsack in an otherwise friendly camp of NPCs, this was prior to 1.6.

Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.***Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis1 -

vovus69✭✭✭✭Well, you have to steal them now. I found one in owned container in Auridon yesterday. They are already going up in price - barbaric and primal are ~30-40k, daedric and ancient elf - 50-60k Imperial did not move yet - still ~70k or so.
All blue motifs are ~350-400g, moving to 500g (I think will be there in a week or so).
So when bunch of people will come on 3/17 purple will be at 50k/75k, imp will be ~100k, blue are at 1k or so.

I found a Daedric in a Dwemer ruin while I was looking for Dwemer motif pages. Nice surprise since I did not know Daedric style! No need to steal that as nothing in the ruin was owned.1 -
