Name shown in game on ps4?

I am wondering what name is shown when you highlight a character on the ps4, I was playing yesterday and over voice chat I heard someone call me by my playstation account name and not by my in game character name. How does some random player that I dont know see my playstation account name? Is there a way to change this? Also I am wondering when someone friend requests me, why does it go to my playstation account and not my in game account?

When this was asked about during the console beta, and why character names weren't shown, ZOS were adamant that console players expect their 'gamer' name to be used no their character's.

Being a lastgen PC player I have no idea why ZOS made such an assertion.

If that's the case then I don't see any point in even naming my characters, no one will ever see them, which is just plain stupid.

Are you serious?

Reasons thats nonsense and an outright lie.

1) If they honestly believed that then what do they think about older gamers who made a silly gamertag when they was younger screaming to PSN to be allowed to change ID names? Alot of people no longer like their PSN IDs and would like to change it. Last thing they want is it on show to the world.

2) If a male/female have a gamertag/ID that relates to their sex like a guy having "SirKIllsAlot" , then why would he want that name over a female character? Are men and women not supposed to play other genders in game?

3) Its an RPGMMO , these games are where people create multiple characters. Are they all supposed to have the same name above their heads? A roleplayer may want to have different characters in different guilds. Why must they have the same name in each one.

4) If its true gamers "expect" their gamer names to be shown then why is the majority complaining about seeing gamertags? Every poll ive seen on here has over 90% AGAINST seeing gamer names. Explain that ZOS.

5) Why make us think up a name for our character without warning that it will not even be used in game? Imagine how many people sat there thinking up their perfect ESO RPG name only to find out it was a waste of time.

6) Roleplayers do NOT want their gamertags over all their characters , they do not want to see stupid gamer names all over the place either. ZOS clearly couldnt care less about RPers.

7) This is the first RPGMMO i have ever played where i was forced to use my gamer name and see others.

I could go on and on with so many reasons that apparent statement from ZOS is incredibly wrong but ill leave it there.
