No Text Chat on console please.

To all of the PC players who keep begging for the old fashioned PC holdover, please stop.
Text chat is tacky and worse yet is the enemy of actual human contact.

The area chat is actually very cool. Try it. Its so easy to make friends.
Many people just use the party system on consoles, it works well to weed out random chatter if that's your thing.
If someone's mic is loud or annoying, you can usually just ask them to turn it down. Many new people appreciate a bit of help.

The names of speakers appear in the bottom corner of the screen. You can say their name and ask that they turn it down or just walk away from the offender.
This is an awesome community of new players zos has pulled together and many people are only accidentally annoying.

From all of us social console players, you are welcome here.
You don't need add ons or text chat.
Those are crutches keeping you from making new friends.
Relax your wrists. Feel that comfortable controller. There are no graphics drivers to chase and download, no button wrapper informal controller support.
Zos has made a great console version of this game. Enjoy it for what it is. Awesome.
Relax your carpal tunnel syndrome and try to play the game without gold traders filling a Cnn text scrawl filled with socially reclusive trolls spewing racist hateful no nonsense or hawking goods like a used car salesman.
That's all you are missing.

Play the game. It's good.

Im a consol player, I've never liked pc gaming, but your talking like its "on behalf of consol gamers" i disagree i reeeeaally want a text chat, all they need to do is make a text chat and put in the setting s the option to turn it off, then that caters to both sides of the debate, i have played a few if the Consol MMOs and the text chat is an extremely usefull tool that has a number of positive uses, i would love it if they added this fearure which frankly is a basic component to an mmo imo

Those crutches as you call them enable hearing impaired people to actively communicate with the rest of the community and to make friends, would you deny them this awesome game rather than just toggle the chat box off? No one wants to get rid of your voice chat.

This. Longtime console player who has used both text and voice chat. Also worth noting that text chatting on consoles far predates voice chat. We can go back to the Sega Saturn's online play, where keyboards were used. And by the Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox generation, keyboards were fairly standard fair for MMOs like Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter.

As far as I know, PS3/PS4, Xbox 360/One, and Wii/Wii U all natively support USB keyboards as well.

Not sure why it has to be either/or issue. Certainly none of us will try to say "My way or the highway" when everyone can be happy.

no need to try and have a dig to make your point, i play with my friends while on mic, so your attempted dig is invalid, I'm simply stating that even someone like me who spends all his time on mic, still gets great uses out of text chat, not to mention people who need help and shouting out in a text chat is going to be spotted by alot more people than the few in your immediate proximity, i juat think like i said before simply make a text chat that can be toggled on/off and people will be happy either way

I have been reading the forums for a while now and there seems to be an attitude that because the PC master race has a feature, it is good.
Here on my console, I don't want to have to pay attention to the text scrawl.
Sure you could toggle it off, but there are players who will never leave the safety blanket of text chat and kinda force anyone that wants to communicate with them to do so as well.
And I don't want to help gold farmers and not spammers ruin this game.

I agree to disagree and respectfully point out that the PC version already has this feature for your entertainment.

If your read my 1st comment i told you im a consol gamer and i dont like pc gaming, i have played multiple MMos on consol and its not a "pc feature" its a communication feature, i know you have your point of being more social by beibg on mic but if you are in fact as social as you are coming across then surely you have came across those gamers that are extremely shy and dont like using voice chat. I know i have, i have met players who prefer to type because of hearing issues, or thet simply dont like the expense headsets can cost, i hope they add text chat in the future to help people out, you have to remember aswell thwre are alot of deaf gamers who love the elder scrolls games but because of no text chat (and no subtitles for that matter) they are being put in a somewhat unfair position

Ffxiv was one of the MMOs i have (and still) played, the chat in that game is awesome and i wouldnt be where i am in that game without it, i met all the people i play with on that game througb the chat

Gold farmers can already spam you through the mail system, there are several systems in place already to stop gold sellers 1. You get 3 character deletion's these refresh one at a time 24 hours 2. They now have robust anti bot inplace 3. Lets not forget consoles can and have been mac banned i doubt a gold farmer is going to constantly go out and buy a $500 console. Spammers are still alive and well dont worry about that, its just in a different form now and is far more intrusive.

Use your voice for five minutes in area chat and you will see how tacky that hawking goods or area spamming guild invites can be.

But I guess its better to have that kind of crap toggled off and everybody can be happy.

What if there were forums where fans of zos could conduct that kind of immersion breaking used car salesmanship?

But it is true that hearing impaired individuals, especially those that can't hear at all, cannot use voice chat and need a text chat option. Not to mention individuals with speech impediments or inability to speak. Certainly, the game can't suit everyone--there's not much you can do to make the game friendly for the visually impaired, but these are things that can easily be remedied with a simple menu option.

If you're worried about spam, you could turn the option off. If you're worried that voice-chat would be emptied, I don't know what to tell you. I doubt everyone would leave it entirely, especially because some may not have access to ways of efficiently typing on console.

I'm not a console player. I have the console version because my husband plays it with his friends, and I have a character there, but I don't play since I can't use my character names rather than my gamertag (gamertag is fine, just don't like that I'm forced to use it). But I definitely think it's a hindrance to many that text-chat isn't even an option. I much prefer the PC version, and honestly, so does he. But his friends have been waiting for console release since PC release...*rubs temples*

While there may be plenty of people in voice chat enjoying themselves, consider the fact that there are countless others who mute and avoid voice chat altogether for multiple reasons--many of them completely justified. I don't know if you've made it far enough yet, but try standing around the Shrine of Hircine with voice chat on. I got a good listen to that conversation and even after multiple attempts at getting people to stop shouting by multiple individuals, it wasn't happening. These people that play without voice chat (for whatever reason) have no alternative to meet new players in-game.

I not saying typing doesn't have its place. The PC already offers that experience. The console version is a chance to have a different experience from the ui nightmare of add ons and text scrawl and a plethora of technical issues that come between you and this game.

Does it have to be purple weapons hawked crudely into a text feed or constantly monitored DPS or frame rate calculations?
Turn the HUD off. Offer that argonian a sweet roll you just made.
Ask that new guy if he needs a new sword or help in. A dungeon. Its kinda fun to just walk up to someone and ask them what enchantment is making that sword glow like that.

The PC version exists.
Try that out if you want a map addon to tell you where each skyshard is.

I want to look for myself.

If only every one had that kind of disposable income to go buy a rig just for text chat

1. Some people do not have acces to a PC.
2. Some people do not like PC...I moved to console to get AWAY FROM mods.
3. NOBODY should be saying "my way is the only right way to enjoy a game"....which is what you sound like.

Options are just that....optional.

And nothing will stop you from doing that.

While at the same time other consoles players may very well want to not play your way.

They just want the option to play theirs.

For me, when I was in DCUO, thankfully they had text chat which is what I found most players used, when I did use a headset I found it extremely distracting and difficult to focus on the game while there were conversations going on. To me it was akin to distracted driving- this is why studies have shown that even 'hands-free' communication still contributes to accidents- it is difficult for many people to have hand-eye coordination along with focusing on or listening to a conversation. When I started using a headset with DCUO is exactly when I started disliking the game, because for me, it took the enjoyment out of the game because of being forced to focus more on communicating with other people than playing the game. This was another deciding factor for me to get ESO for the PC and not the PS4, which is usually what I play on.
