Is there a way I am suppose to progress through a zone?

Hi guys,

I recently started on this game on the PS4. I made a Khajiit nightblade and started with their standard faction/alliance. The first few quests were straight forward and lead me along in a natural progression. When I was around level 7, I must have taken a wrong turn. On one of the larger maps (starting area I believe). I went up a path and basically hugged the Eastern coastline and progressed North. Along the way I found various quest givers and proceeded to complete a few more quests.

Things started to get tough when I was around level 9 and I was fighting level 13-14 guys. By the time I was level 11 I was fighting level 17s and they were ripping me apart. I went back to the starting town and this time hugged the West coastline and moved up. I found a few more new quests where I was fighting level 6 pirates and now tearing them apart.

My question is this: Is there a specific way I should be moving around on these maps? ie. start at the bottom and cover side / side while moving up? Do monsters get harder on all maps the further North you go or am I just on glue?

thx :)

Stay on the main area storyline if you are concerned with getting ahead of yourself/content. It should be pretty obvious what the next "step" is if you are following the main content story.

The guard sends you there, then you do that, then you go back to him, then you go to the king, then he asks you to check out somewhere else, which will usually be the next hub area, and once there, you can/should do the side quests.

The zones do kind of sweep across, each in their own "direction". Glenumbra sweeps north. Next area sweeps east. Etc.

First off, from your description of levels, it sounds like you skipped the Starter Islands. There should be a quest giver to send you on a boat to them outside the door where you first came into Tamriel. By the time you finish that, you would be around lvl 7-8 before even starting in Auridon, Glenumbra or Stonefalls depending on your alliance. Lots of xp and some skyshards there to be had.

Most of the zones acutally do have a pattern to them (ie: you end up moving with the zone storyline from one side to the other or around the zone in a circle)

They want you to explore. Not just stick to the main storyline/zone main storyline route. Go out and pick up quests that arent on the beaten path. Hit up World Bosses and Anchors. Jump into the Delves and knock out the Delve Bosses. If youre doing all the content in the zone you can easily out-level the zones mobs and content well before you get to the quests that send you to the next zone. If you find yourself out leveled by anything, its not rocket science. Its quite obvious youve overlooked and skipped content. I suspect that while youre moving from one major hub to the next youre ignoring the quest markers that pop up on your map along the way. Because quite often if youre paying attention youll notice that in-between two towns youll run into two or three minor side quests that are not far off the major roads.

Also make sure to knock out the Mages Guild and Fighters Guild quests. There is more then enough content at each level to get you to the next.

Thanks gang. I think that is likely what has happened. I probably got a little too gungho and missed a key progression quest. I am trying to go slow and take in all around me but there is a lot and part of me just wants the next loot :) haha

Oh -- can I hijack my own thread and ask a new questions? Where or how can I learn to improve lock picking? I have randomly come across a few chests which I have picked but my khajiit is now level 12 and my lock picking skill has only been used maybe 4 or 5 times. My goal was to make a sneaky thief type character but so far he's been just fighting. I do not have six fingers on my left hand!

You don't, actually. It's just a matter of practice. Legerdemain skill line from the Justice System only has an increased chance to Force locks, nothing to help actual picking.

Something that has helped some folks is to watch the Springs for jiggling not the pins themselves. The springs tend to start a little earlier. Don't worry, as you get more practice, you'll be opening Master chests first try :)

Lockpicking will increase as you encounter more and more lockboxes and chests. Lockboxes are not as common as chests oddly enough it seems.

Chests are another incentive to go out and explore. Youll find them everywhere if you slow down and take a good look around you. If youre rushing through the zones youll definitely miss these things and these opportunities.

Start stealing stuff Sell them in the outlaw refuge in town look for the trident looking icon on maps of town. In the Legerdemain skill line there is a passive that will let your force the lock better. At max level it adds +75% it's still better to just learning to do it the hard way but if you can't figure it out this is an option and not a bad one it helps if you are doing a speed run on a dungeon.
