Sorry if this should have been posted elsewhere, but I couldn't find what i thought was an appropriate category for this and I can't post in the Dev's Discussion area. I would encourage all players from the console RP community or solo-players to weigh in on this no matter what side of the coin you are on and draw the dev's attention to this thread if you agree with what I am proposing.

What I am Proposing: I am proposing that the Dev's include a chat box to the console HUD

The Reason:

I don't think you (the Dev's) considered the impact of taking text off of the consoles, especially concerning the RP community. The game looses it's immersive quality when a constant barrage of players are using Voip in the area or guildies talking in guild chat. True, you can always go into private party chat, however, talking ooc and ic isn't always apparent when using a microphone. Also, I don't have a mic and using the kinect mic isn't practical. I believe that excluding area chat completely from game or having it set to "off" as default would help with the immersion process. I think text chat would be better while in zones rather than listening to some random player babble on about this or that, at least while texting I can mentally block unimportant messages that scroll across the text window. I also think that having a texting option will improve player to player trading or auctioning without having to be bombarded by it in Voip. This way you can still be in chat with your guild and RP, sell your crafted items or try and form groups with like minded players without having to send messages via Xbox chat or through the in-game mail system while ruining the immersive nature of the game for other players. I can't stress enough how deeply involved in my character, what (s)he's doing at the momment, or the dungeon/area that (s)he's just discovered only to have it ruined by someone's complaining, dropping f-bombs, racial slurs or general obnoxious rambling simply because I neglected to turn off area and guild voip. Not to mention being able to hear NPC's in the game over the Voip speak.
With concern for the the players who like using Voip consider this option, create multiple Voip channels such including the ones you already have but add General, Zone, RP, LFG, and a Trade/Auction channels to the Voip menu but also a chat box box for those of us who don't have mics or don't want to be bombarded by those who do, and still be communicate with other players.

Imagine roleplay an 500 years old male mage, with the voice of a 18 years old girl, or a 18 years old girl with the voice of a 45 dude.
Imagine some troll keep dropping f bomb around your RP events.
Poor poor console RP community. *shake head*

I honestly regret buying the console version. I could've bought it on PC, but decided to buy it on my Xbox because my buddies are there. Worst decision ever. My buddies might not even buy the game, and now I'm stuck playing an MMO without being able to communicate with people. Voice chat doesn't work 90% of the time, and when it does work, all I hear is obnoxious sounds. Even if it did work, I'm just socially awkward. I don't like voice chatting with strangers. I need text chat, but for some ridiculous reason, they didn't add it to the game. I wish I can get a refund to buy it on PC instead. I really do love the game.

I think the concept of VOIP was good. But in reality all I hear is buzzing, squealching noises, annoying music, people talking to their friends and family screwing my immersion royally. I will admit I have heard it work nicely a couple of times and it was refreshing. That is definitely not the normal though and I can't imagine it ever will be without being on some private server with people that actually care to use it responsibly. Even then listening from the ingame voice acting to some teenagers brooklyn accent harassing me to join their guild isn't that immersive.
My point is I should not have to take myself out of area chat to be able to enjoy a core social aspect of the game. I like to see what is happening with other players in my area without having to actually to speak to them personally with a mic.

Even when they fix voice chat and they will, you still have to turn off the voice channels manually. Also, just like all other voice enabled games, you've still got the immature, music blasting, racist, and s**t-talking trolls who are playing and delight in making other players miserable. I get what Zos was trying to accomplish here but I don't think they thought this through completely before deciding that a chat box was not necessary on consoles.

And I am completely with you on feeling socially awkward and how it would affect gameplay and player interaction.

Am I the only one who likes the fact we have no text box that will be spammed by gold sellers and 12 year olds with the N word?. RPers can make their town guild and channels for RP. >:v Instead of complaining you cant do things the old way come up with a new way.
    I ate your sweet roll! Kaw~ :v

I made mention of this already and I think it's a good idea for those that are willing to make it try and work but....

Yea, cuz having to read it is so much more worse than having to hear it, right? sigh.

A text chat would be optional, they can make it so you can disable it if you want.

You make a good point although I think you missed mine. I am not complaining outright, I think Voip has its place in the game however I don't think it's a choice the that should be forced upon everyone. That being said, I see your point as well and a chat box shouldn't be forced on everyone as well. So with that in mind, I think a chat box option should include it being turned off as default as well as Voip as being off as default. This would allow the player to decide which they will prefer for themselves as well as being able to chat/speak freely between the two at the same time.

As far as the gold sellers and 12 year olds go, I would much rather read it in chat than to have to hear it in Voip. At any rate the ability to ignore certain user would be a nice option for both Voip and a chat box.

That old way is the way every other major current mmo on consoles , not just PC's , does it also currently , and likely so will new ones. ESO is the outlier , not in a good way as almost every review has mentioned , lacking all text chat.

And I think you'd find the vast majority of players would rather read it than hear it.

Your first point can be solved by just disabling the Chat box, Your second point is mute because there are people doing the exact same thing just over voip, Yes they are ive seen it and its way worst than any chat box messages your gonna get and to the best of my knowledge you cant Mute individual people so this problem is even more prevalent on the Voip system . Even if they make a new Channel for RP text based is still the preferred version as stated above its not very immersive to be trying to role play 500 year old male mage if your a 19 year old female and vice versa.

I think that should add but instead of having it in game put on map section, tab map remove social start menu and put on select map.

This way you wont get bots on chat especially if you don't want it. plus when click on you make chat box as big as screen in the area.

plus you can have it in game but have option turn off in default .

i wouldnt mind if they did this, i would prefer it included in the Hud though to be aware of who is messaging me and when, As for bots Spamming gold selling websites i just dont see it happening on the eso console version. i mean they already have a way to spam you through the mail system they do it all the time on PC and for these sites to sell you gold they first need it and as far as i know there arent any working bots for the console version for them to be able to farm said gold
