I played last night but when I got through the que tonight it would not let me play as him

and talk to the carpenter there about Woodworking. Once you hit Level 6, take your Crafting Certification quest, and you will reach the Woodworker Certification tutorial. After that, look around in the world for fallen logs to chop up and other Woodworking Materials.
