And ZOS has said many MANY times that on console your Gamer Tag will display. This is a design decision not a system limitation. They said they are doing to keep ESO in line with console norms.

If some half *BARK* company like cryptic can make NeverWinter into an MMO with custom naming then by GOD I expect ANY company that wants to cash in on the Elder Scrolls name to be able to deliver on par with it.

One problem with PS4 gamer tags is that (in EU anyway) we cannot change them.

I created mine in 2007 and am stuck with it as have had PS plus since it started and want to keep the 100s of games PS plus has given me.

Luckily for me, mines similar to this forum name, but on the PS forums, many complain that they created theirs years ago, have now grown up and want a sensible gamer tag, but thanks to Sony policy, they cannot change it.

Wow, quite surprised that your character name isn't displayed in game, who was the genius that came up with that idea, haha. Looking on the bright side though, at least I won't have to agonize over my character name when I roll new toons on the console.

I've read through a lot of these threads this morning when I should have been working more. However...I've also been trying to think about something soothing to say, something positive about all of this, and I keep getting stuck with "lols" :D

I honestly don't see why they couldn't have put char names in. I'd love to know who actually came up with this ground breaking decision in the management team.

Yeah, I vastly prefer seeing character names to something like "stonern00b1002" or something like that. Really takes away from the game world.

Thank goodness I'm continuing on PC and only console occasionally!

Honestly the name thing surprises me the most.

What were they thinking using gamertag's to show instead of character names.

Seems to be an obvious bad decision.

Does any console game allow you to create a new name viewable to all? Seems like it would be a console restriction to avoid reporting the incorrect person.

battlemaster - xbox live vs batttlemaster - ESO could cause all sorts of issues when xbox or ps are investigating reports of issues.

Neverwinter requires you to name your characters, and that name, not your GT, is what is seen by players.

forcing you to use your gamertag prevents hiding behind new alts, which encourages many console kiddies to become extremely toxic.

toxic behaviour mentioned in the op happens on consoles with voice. if anyone thought this game would be different you really were kidding yourselves.

The thing is, without a chat log, can you remember who was being toxic, so you can report them? A character name, "bob", is a lot easier to recall than some nonsense ascii string suffixed with a four figure number. Logs also provide evidence.

This is compounded by the proximity chat, where people can enter and leave your proximity - and say whatever they want, toxic or not - before you even register their gamertag.

It's not foolproof. The only way to get even close to that is to have a log. How many of us scroll back up chat logs just to see what we've missed from a conversation even? That alone is a big part of MMOs...the ascii equivalent of people watching.

in gw2 you see account name in chat or party when you mouse over their name..but that is it..the character themselves have their own name..which is good and kind of fun..some people come up with funny names.

Showing your gamertag..also allows for psn/xboxlive friend requests and the potential for gold farmer friend requests out side of the game...

There should be like blizzard battle.net. you can either add someone as friend with his ingame toon or his psn account(if he agree to share it). Just because i may want to have an alt character for solo relaxing play and stay unknown, does not mean that i am a toxic playeror i plan to be a bad guy..

This will end like adding some people to play with and then maybe eventually remove them from friend list...

Good thing my psn name is yodased then I guess. I think these types of issues will iron themselves out, you know in more than 24 hours after release.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

So what? Since neverwinter is crap and neverwinter shows players names not gametags = showing player name not gametags is crap? Sounds logical.

    Hmm

I expected to see a lot more account names on the console, since the player identity spans multiple games, but I was quite surprised that they did not place the character name on the reticule, even if it also included the player account name above, below, or next to it.

After playing a couple hours, I really don't see the need to have character names, which seems a bit odd for a role playing game. Compared to the PC/Mac, it leans more towards action-adventure than role playing in that the player is the protagonist and the character is a customizable facade.

Is it possible to get the character name a player is using? Does character generation still ask for a name? If it does, why not just auto-assign a name based on the player account name (lordrichter_1)?
