Don't alt-tab - you'll kill everyone

Apparently, because that's what happened to me. I was standing in the middle of a group of NPCs, and I had just gotten done talking to a quest NPC, not in a guarded town, but in a combat area; however, some of the NPCs surrounding me were "guards" (Dominion NPCs), and I had my summons out, so I wasn't too worried about alt-tabbing to check something in my browser.

This is where things get weird. I think my character is either possessed by the devil or is actually The Hulk, because when I alt-tabbed back into the game, I was surrounded by dead NPCs. The "guards". Battlereve Urcelmo (my quest NPC). Everyone. And the best (worst) part? I apparently killed them all, because I suddenly had a 1.3k bounty (up from 0), I was then/am now KOS to guards, and I could loot all the dead NPCs.

So, yeah. Don't alt-tab. Your character might flip out and murder everyone.

This sounds... omg! Never heard of this before.
But would it work for you to go to the desktop by hitting the Windows button on the keyboard? I always use this to minimize the game when I have to check something out in the background. Maybe it's a problem with the keys you are using (just a guess).

Also, if your game sound doesn't run in the background while you're in a different tab, you should turn it on, so you could hear if something is happening. A few times where I was in the browser, I could suddenly hear combat sounds, so I knew that I need to go back to the game to get the situation under control^^

I smell a troll. Pic or it didn't happen (as others have pointed out, guards and quest NPCs cannot be killed by any normal game mechanic).

I only wish I had taken a screenshot; I didn't think about it until later, after I was done freaking out about being KOS to guards (I've never had a bounty above 0). You can choose not to believe me, but consider this: I didn't just post this here, I also opened a Help ticket (which, of course, didn't help at all; apparently, no one has had this happen to them before (or at least, haven't reported it)). If I were making this up, I definitely would not have drawn the attention of the GMs.

I have my Windows key disabled, actually - I used Alt-Tab, specifically, then clicked back into the game. Also, they were not town guards, they were level 15 Dominion NPCs (which is why I put "guards" in quotes)... while doing the Auridon quest line, you'll often see their associates battling enemy NPCs. If these are the ones that are supposed to be invincible, then something really weird happened. Though, there was a dead Battlereve Urcelmo, too, so... yeah, really weird, regardless.

The only proof I can offer (besides any bounty I still have (haven't logged in yet)): when I went to loot the NPCs (which I didn't, because I didn't want the GMs thinking I did this on purpose), they had weird items like paintings, all of them worth 30 gold, and every item would have been considered stolen, rather than simply looted.

First part of the help ticket response (the rest was telling me how to avoid killing NPCs/dealing with the Justice system, which I already know (thought I knew...?)):

"Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited Team! Its always a pleasure to hear from you! I am sorry to hear about the trouble you are having. Never fear however, as I can assure you that we will do our best to help you try and solve this issue.

I'm afraid, after checking our logs and database, it seems like this issue has not yet been encountered by other players."

No offense, and I like your 'story' and all, but you've been a forum member since April 2014, and this post/thread is your very first.

The very idea that you didn't take a screenshot just screams 'attention troll'.

Good story though

Next time Zeni does one of those 'write a story for this scene' contest, you should enter.

Your disbelief doesn't change the facts (i.e. that this really happened to me), so it doesn't bother me.

Also, why would I bother coming here after more than a year just to make up some story? That makes no sense to me.

I can think of a couple of scenarios where this would be true.

Right off the top of my head, your summons starts attacking for some reason, and then another player comes and also attacks, and then goes away before you tab back.

They were only lv 15's easy to do

That's what I thought; the ONLY way I could have done damage to these NPCs would be my summons attacking - but that doesn't solve how the whole thing happened to begin with. Even if someone came up and attacked the NPCs, would their response attacks have hit me (thus causing my pets to respond)? And I was only level 17 or 18. My pets would not have been powerful enough to kill the 5 or 6 NPCs that were lying around me.

Just... weirdness. I don't think an answer is going to be forthcoming. I just wanted to share my experience.

NPCs may have AOEd your pets when fighting someone else. That would have pulled them in.

Did you have an area of effect heal up? Someone ELSE might have come and murdered all the NPCs while you were alt-tabbed, and then wandered through your healing field, thus being healed and giving you a bounty for aiding a criminal.

I did not have any PBAoE fields up (heals, etc.).

This has to be what happened, I think. I told the zone about it as soon as I realized it happened, and someone said something like, "LOL, I led a bunch of monsters in there and everyone died, sorry!" I didn't believe them then, figuring that couldn't have been the cause...

With their story and your theory, I think the string of events might have gone like this:

1. I alt-tab out
2. Dude leads a bunch of enemies to the NPCs, they start fighting
3. The NPCs throw down an AoE attack which also hits my pets, drawing them in
4. The NPCs are killed either by the enemies (more likely), or by my pets (less likely)
5. I tab back in, find myself surrounded by death and with a bounty

If this is the case, then I think the fix would be to make it so that a player's summons are not valid combat targets for a friendly NPC's AoE effects. I kind of assumed that's how it was, since if it's not, that's... possibly a bug, as it makes unintended, indirect PvP possible. Drag an enemy to a friendly, AoE-casting NPC who is standing next to a player who has summons out, and blam-o.

Is it possible a Veteran ranked player aggro'd a horde and killed them on top of you? With your pet fighting the guards and earning you a bounty?

The reason I asked is that I've seen a TON of players trolling by leading packs of mobs onto their faction mates.

They should be drawn and quartered, if you ask me...
