Decided to give this game a shot about a week ago and bought the imperial edition. Loving every minute of it right now.
I was a huge skyrim fanatic for quite awhile and, while this isn't really skyrim 2.0 MMO style, it most certainly has an Elder Scrolls "feel" to it that is making me all sorts of happy playing it. Trying out both a templar and a sorc right now and honestly having the most fun on a heavy armor, 2h wielding sorc (of all things) as i level.
Anyway, if anyone has any general newbie tips i'll happily take any advice. Other than that i play a lot of MMOs so i can get the basics fairly easily
See you all in Tamriel =D

I would say wear at least one piece of each type of armor (light, medium, heavy) at first. That way you can build up each at least a little should you change your mind about your armor type. I started out wearing 5 heavy, 1 medium, and 1 light. Now I have lvl 50 in each.

But i'm dabbling in most crafting profs right now (just not sinking points into anything but smithing yet) so its not to hard to whip up a decent piece for a slot or two
cheers
