How do alliances of guilds work?

There is a quetion in "Guild Spotlight" where they ask if you're in an alliance of guilds. How does one of these work?

Probably one main guild that the leaders are all in, then one guild for each faction and a trade guild. A player can be in up to 5 guilds.
