Swimming, Flying, Player Housing, Etc.

We were able to fly, swim/dive and build our own house in previous Elder Scrolls titles. Why wasn't the game built with these capabilities from the ground up?

I thought the round-table developer thing they aired last Friday about swimming was interesting... but I don't understand why they're acting like they just invented swimming and underwater combat... because it's been around in games for a while, right? (see Super Mario Brothers)

Of course not everything in Skyrim was going to work in ESO, but now they're having to re-write all of this code to implement these things when it should have been apparent from the beginning that we'd want/expect them in game.

Like dying weapons/weapon hilts and shields. Of course we want that now, so they'll match our gear. Lot's of games let you dye your gear. And it usually comes with the game when you buy it, versus waiting over a year for developers to finish it.

Or console launch... boy did that ever get pushed back.

Meanwhile folks in Cyrodiil are getting ready to revolt because their area is still far from finished, and I don't blame them. Of course they're angry when these upgrades that were in place in a previous title are getting patched in bit by bit taking away from development of new content and finishing content that probably should have been finished last December.

It just seems like they're doing more work now than they would have had to do if they had released on all platforms together and included these things that they should have known we'd want: dying, diving, housing, flying, a complete/finished PVP area, etc.

And we have to hound them about when this system is going to be finished and when that system will be introduced. And they don't know so they don't have anything for us, or they don't want to say because they don't want to be responsible for a public deadline. It's just a frustrating situation for everyone involved, I think.

Hmmmm I dont remember being able to fly in previous elder scrolls other than the levitate spell in morrowind and I wouldn't consider that the same as flying.

The only flying I would ever want in ESO is a potion of levitation.

I was referring to dragon-mounts in Skyrim.

Not exactly superman-style flying, but you were able to navigate in that 3D space, which is what the devs were bringing up as a huge issue for swimming being implemented in ESO.

Skyrim had a tiny bit of flying, although tbh, it was really bad :-) plus flying in a singleplayer game and a mmo is two very different things.. and frankly I hope we don't get flying.. After playing wow, i don't want to see more flying mounts.. having a dragon swoop over you every second takes the magic away from dragons

Didn't they have flying mounts in Morrowind? I ask because I didn't play it.

Hmmm... I didn't know that was part of the deal.

No. They had no mounts in Morrowind. They had Stilt Striders but that was more a ferry service (load screen).

The ONLY flying mount in any TES game has been Skyrim, and that was only because you played the Dragonborn and had dragon's blood in your veins so you could speak the language of the Dragons and bend the dragons will with a shout.

Didn't play WOW either, so I'll just take your word on that.

I wouldn't even really call it a mount though. You pretty much just shouted at a dragon and let him fly you around in circles.

Not technically, they aren't usable in Draenor, the most recent expansion continent though, not that that has stopped Blizz from selling flying mounts for 25$ a pop.

No flying because of "invisible walls", period.

In Morrowind there was a Levitation spell/potion. And it was an island surrounded by the sea. So, there was no "invisible walls" exactly.
But... Oblivion's world were designed with "invisible walls" around the Cyrodiil province, so no levitation spells/potions.
Skyrim were designed the same way, "invisible walls" around game zone.
In TESO there is invisible walls all over the zone, except "tranfer corridors" with triggers that brings you to another zone.
If you'll try to fly to the border, you'll see the "outworld" not textured empty space, like when you fall under the floor.

But, ZOS can just limit the flying height, to prevent players to fly beyond borders.
Don't know why we need flying at all.
