Crafting Writs Question.

I have a lvl 5 character I would like to start doing writs for and neither of the starter NPC's are showing up and there is no quest icon on the writ board. I even checked to see if I had a writ to fill but nothing. So, whats up with this? Thnx for any help at all guys/gals. ^^

Oh, and one other question: Is smithing writs worth it?

You need to be L6 before the Writ Certifiers even appear in the game. This was always intended, but not enforced until 1.6.

So, gain one more level, then look for them near or in the Mages/Fighters Guild in the town in your starter zone (not the starter islands). I don't know if you have to go to the board first or the NPC, so check the board where the writ is supposed to be first. You can find those in the crafting area in that same starter town.

At low levels, a 100 stack of Iron Ingots will allow you to do 4 to 6 writs. The money you get from the writs will pay for the mats you need for the most part if you buy them at a kiosk. You do get inspiration (crafting exp) from making the stuff, and then again turning the writs in.

But, you will level faster from Deconstruction of Loot and Research in Traits. Well, the research takes time, but the Inspiration you get from the research adds up.

I think that you can start doing writs at L6... or that's what I've read somewhere else.

At least, the fact is that I have a L6 char that can get to the NPCs doing the crafting certification, but my L4 bank-mule can't.

And about the equipment writs... perhaps as a start, low level writs are worth doing (if you have the material), but as you progress and invest skill points in the crafting, you'll get to a point in which they aren't worth anymore.

The most extreme case is highest-level writ requiring almost a full 100 stack of material to complete per writ.

Also, the inspiration return doesn't seem to scale very well with level... so they aren't worth doing as a means of leveling the craft either.

EDIT2: ...and Nestor beat me to it :) Best Ninja ever

EDIT: But of course, if you have tons of mats and nothing to use it with, they may be worth doing them just for the chance of getting gold tempers from them... but YMMV :)

Freshly introduced to the writs process with my L6 Clothier just last night. I went straight to the man/woman/mer/person. By sheer accident, actually. Simply walking around and talking to folks.

My first writ was 2 hats, 2 gloves, and 2 shoes.
... delivered to a L16 zone, for crying out loud!

It was quite challenging to sneak all that way. I had a blast.
    ... the reward sucked.

EDIT: Twas not reflective of time invested hiking back after 3 deaths to get there.

Glad to have you in ESO, SeñorCinco ... looking forward to a DID thread if you're ever up to it with one of your toons characters ...

To answer the OP, yes, you have to be level 6. At higher levels, the crafting writs lose a little bit of importance due to the fact that maxed out crafting skills can't benefit from further inspiration. Still, writ rewards can include rare mats and provisioning recipes from time to time ... even when the skill is maxed.

Also the required materials & delivery points are entirely related on your first passive in the craft (it will be one that is rated X/9), and X will roughly correlate with which zone you must deliver to.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Ha,ha! I see what you did there. B)

Don't think I haven't given it some thought. Alas, it may be a while before I try that stuff in this monster addition to the series.

It's been a year since I was one of those that ditched it 2 months in due to bots. Thankfully that mess was put to rest and good job they did. I really started thinking hard about it when I realized I could go through the entire tutorial by punching everything and even killed the Child of Bones with an ole fashioned H2H beat down.

... yea, all of that changed when he hit dry land.

Pardoning my elderly and failing lack of comprehension in these golden years but I'm lost with that. I'm just not familiar enough with the mechanics to get my head wrapped around those formulas.

If the first passive is 1/9 then you will be able to use #1 wood type which is maple and the level (1-14) corresponds with the first zone (Auridon, Glenumbra, Stonefalls depending on your faction) 2/9 would equate to the next wood - Oak - which is level 16-24 (24.. I think) which would equate to your second zone (Grahtwood, Stormhaven, Deshaan), the next wood type would be for higher levels, which would correspond to the third zone

Although, the writs will not send you to a place you have no way of getting to (example - Craglorn, even if you're 9/9 in the passive, you can NOT enter without being veteran rank). This was a problem when they first came out but it was fixed.

That's why my L6 character was sent to the L16 area of Grathwood. I understand. However, the writ was only to supply #1 cloth items. Those L16 troops took up L1 gear.

Must have been for training. Otherwise those poor sods never stood a chance.

    TY for the detailed reply.

Actually, the troops are quite smart. You can basically do all areas up to level 50 naked and barehanded. The soldiers just buy the most inexpensive armour to cover up their immodest parts.

That's just the way I like it too. Big ones 2 at a time and little ones, as fast as you can get here.

LOL. I tried sneaking to start but then I realised that it was easier to take off the armour and run as fast as possible to the nearest city and die along the way becasue it would generally rez me at a closer wayshrine if I made it far enough. Also, when you enter a region it turns out that one wayshrine gets activated being where you were supposed to enter through quest sequence :D. In EP that means that you can always get Shors Stone by entering from Stonefalls and if you die you get pulled to Fullham Fort Wayshrine. If you enter Eastmarch from Shors Stone then you can jump to Windhelm.
