Personally I am not against race changes from a lore standpoint so much as I am against it for fotm-related reasons. It would be one thing if they wanted to change race due to aesthetic reasons, but I think we all know that the race changes are just for choosing 'superior' passives.
Race Change is VERY dangerous. What stops ZOS from "rebalancing" racial passives every 6 months or so leading players to feeling "encouraged" to buy a race change from the Crown Store?
I'm not saying they would DO this, I'm saying it opens the door for abuse.
I'd prefer we be given the option to choose racial passives for alts: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/153977/eso-character-offspring-a-phylogenetics-concept/p1
NO race change.
NO "free choice" of racial passives.
This game has already bended TES lore in so many ways, we DON'T need to ruin it completely.

lol, the races barely adhere to lore anyway. What happened to Imperials' speechcraft? Orcs' Berserker Rage? Etc?
Also, as many of us created characters OVER A YEAR AGO and some of those racial passives have changed drastically from what they were when we created our characters w/out so much as a warning, it makes sense to let those players at least choose a different race.
What might have been a great race choice for your build at launch could be absolutely terrible for pretty much everything now, and that is NOT the players' fault whatsoever.
This is a MMO not single player likes skyrim enough with the lore the game has plenty lore related stuff letting you change race is just for the convenience of the game so people can try new toons and builds this is a game remember that, not a book.Race Change is VERY dangerous. I like you.
And when you see only personal attacks and condescending replies from the pro-race-changers, you know what side has the strongest case.

Yup - if immersion and lore gets washed out completely, the game dies quick. Glad more people are starting to realise this.
Race changes are handled on the backend, outside of the game. Lore doesn't even enter the equation.
Did it break lore when you typed in your character's name? Did it break immersion when you created your character from scratch at the creation screen?
Did it break lore when you set up your account for ESO?
No? Then neither does this.
It is funny with all the "lore breaking" arguments where there are already hundreds of battle hardened Nords fighting for Aldmeri Dominion & Thalmor or those proud Mer folk dying hard for lesser Men races and their bloody pacts. Same thing with Argonians and Dunmers are in same pact lol.
This game isn't lore friendly already. It is just yet another freaking MMO in Elder Scrolls disguise.
Actually, I think that is up for interpretation. I (and many of friends who are still playing the game) wouldn't even be here if ESO didn't hold a certain amount of lore-friendliness. I will always find myself advocating for certain amount of lore maintenance. That being said, in an MMO setting I believe it is healthy to stretch lore to a certain extent. But never do I believe it should be wholeheartedly abandoned.
And so would buying a box that leads to the mystical land of Skyrim, the ability to swim underwater in heavy armor in the game, somehow being able to convince NPCs to hook up with you for life just by doing a singular quest, the ability to pause the game and you know what? I'm pretty sure they had you insert a name for your character in there too. If we use your interpretation, no ES game was ever lore-friendly in the first place.(You seem to be referencing immersion more than lore.)Actually, I think that is up for interpretation. Again, changing your race has absolutely nothing to do w/ lore. It's a completely moot point.
If people find this type of thing lore-breaking, then they shouldn't even be playing this game at all, since creating an ESO account would have already "broken lore" in the first place.
So would paying cash to a magical shop that allows mounts and costumes to appear out of thin air or seeing Alliance symbols above peoples' heads in Cyrodiil.
Not to be too nit picky but race change is usually viewed as more than just a simple mechanical change (as opposed to the passives which are purely mechanical), but is an openly viewable aesthetic change. The lore excuse is an utter cop-out and shouldn't even be given consideration for something that is entirely mechanical like a race change.

The lore argument is like the holy grail of TES forum arguments. When Skyrim was released and players saw the new perk system, some were like: "NOOOOOOO! LORE BREAKING! I WON'T PLAY!!!" (Funny, some people insisted they leveled without every using any perks, just to keep that oh so pure TES experience ... )
When Oblivion was released, it was: "LEVELED GAME??? NO!!!! I WANT TO DIE AT LEVEL 1!! JUST LIKE MORROWIND!!!!"
Want to change your race in Oblivion? Console command. Want to change your race in Skyrim? Console command. Bethesda could have easily coded that little gem out of the game if they didn't want it in there, right? But, no, they left it in. So that would make it "lore' for it to be in the game, right?
I've been in TESO for a year and I've seen my nightblade and templar come drift in and out of effectiveness due to any number of tweaks and changes. Still I don't want to change my race, etc., because I like my characters. But if others do, meh, let 'em. So what?
But let's be accurate, shall we? I'm one of those fanboys (fangirl in this case). I think you are flat wrong. This game clearly has never been a slave to any kind of TES lore. Not even from day one. I can't think of a single concession that's been made just for fans.
The reason this game has changed repeatedly is because a bunch of people keep complaining about gameplay: sorcerers are OP ("just roll a stick and a dress" ... remember those posts?) and templars are OP (yeah, remember early on when templars were considered overpowered?) and so on. "I DIE TOO MUCH IN PVP!!" "VAMPIRES ..... NOOOOO!" (Although, you know, it probably makes sense that you'd be scared of a blood-sucking fiend.) "SORCERERS GET AWAY TOO FAST!!" "NIGHTBADE IS BROKEN!!!" "TEMPLAR IS BROKEN!!!" 'DK IS BROKEN!" (Really? Those posts always make me smile ...) "THE GAME IS TOO EASY!!" "THE GAME IS TOO HARD!!!"
(Case in point: Doshia. Remember when Doshia was pretty freakin hard? I mean, actually difficult? People would come to the forum and say, "NOOO! I can't defeat Doshia." Zeni rebalanced and now it isn't even a fight. Two or three hits and Doshia is dead, making for one the most anticlimatic moments in the entire game ... and changing that NOTHING to do with lore.)
@Soris is correct in that this feature probably needs to be in the game. And Zeni may have "promised" it. But I no longer have faith in Zenimax promises or assurances. I was here when Zeni was saying things like "The subscription model is the only model this game will ever have." Right. We saw what happened there. Or "We will only be selling cosmetic items in the Crown Store." Soon you be able to pay to learn to ride. And what is next? Skill lessons? Instant skyshards? If it has value to players, it has a price tag on it - no matter what they said when they opened the store.
We definitely need a barber shop. And the only real reason I can see for NOT adding a race change is that Zeni's current sales model requires players who want to play any race/any alliance pay an additional fee for that convenience. So if I'm a Breton and I want to be in the Dominion, I have to pay an additional fee (buy an upgrade) to do so. But if I could just reroll my race ... then why pay the extra for that convenience?
That being said, in an MMO setting I believe it is healthy to stretch lore to a certain extent. But never do I believe it should be wholeheartedly abandoned.
Look, I'm not saying lore should be paramount in any sense of the word, but it should undoubtedly be taken into consideration (however mild). Otherwise what's to keep them from adding dragons, armor with flaming wings, gigantic glowing swords twice your size and other completely nonsensical additions?
What I cant take seriously tho is the lore-gibberish people. It's not like all these players want to change race to Klingon or Gremlin while driving a motorcycle. They want to replace one lore-appropriate race with another. Seeing a Breton instead of a Redguard next to you at the crafting station ruins immersion how? There's no need to explain a race change with lore to begin with. It's one of many basic features, mechanics or convenience items that exists in MMORPG's, separated from both lore and story line.
