I think this is an MMO... are you an NPC or a Player?......

pat_eggersb14_ESO
Maybe there is a setting that I am not aware of, but how the heck can I tell if the characters running on the screen are npc's or players??? When out in the world half the time I get attacked by I assume to be players as they seem to be just as confused as I am. Like the game but this feels like a single player game not an mmo, to me at least.

You're speaking in the sense of some graphical setting to set apart the visual representation of an NPC from a player right?

players are running or stay still, NPCs are walking. Also, players have weird equipment and sometimes, cyrodiil markers near the name. So it is pretty distinctive...

Player vs Player is only available in one Zone called Cyrodil. So If your not in Cyrodil getting attacked, it's from an NPC not a player.

well, technically, they could still attack you, they just can't actually hit you.

Several alts I've created, but haven't leveled much yet:

    Demerwei - Argonian Shadowscale (Nightblade - Dual-wield Axes/Dual-wield Daggers)
Gohrnag - Orc Elementalist (Dragon Knight - Frost Staff/Lightning Staff)
Kerasha - Redguard Mystic (Templar - Flame Staff/Restoration Staff)
Alawael - Bosmer Assassin (Nightblade - Bow/Two-hand Battleaxe)

You're right, the game is confused between being an MMO and "Skyrim with friends"
Trying to please both the Immersion crowd and MMO crowd led to a lot of mistakes on ZOS' part.

The good news is, after awhile you learn to tell the differences. Bad news is you'll never know if a friend or guildy is anywhere near you unless you can memorize everyone's character names And associate them with @ names from your guilds.

I'd still like to see nameplates brought back as I find this to be one of the most unsociable games I've ever played.
You see @ names in guild roster, @ names in guild chat but Character names in Zone and character names in groups...I rarely know who the heck is who at any given time.

I think there are a few addons that put extra icons by name displays.

In cyrodiil there should be a color-coded tag. Speaking of that - if you die incredibly fast - it's probably a player. No AI can be as deadly as the other PCs
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Guys, I really hate nametags. Like, with a passion. I hate cluted ui that tries to tell you a thousand things that just confuse you more than helps. This is one of the reasons why MMOs are usually too hard to me to get into. I already have to deal with learning how to play. I don't want to spend time learning what that triangle means next to people's names.

So, I prefer Eso's method. I have no issue telling player from npc. The thought crossed my mind early levels, but it turns out I was worrying about nothing.

Look for the ora. Enemy NPC have a red ora when you mouse over them. Friendly NPCs are green if they can't be killed, white if they can be killed. And neutral NPCs are yellow.

    aura.

    in other words, the "glow".

and real players have no "glow".

    There are a few ways..

    - Player characters have no glow when you look at them, NPCs that will attack you glow red
    - Your target health bar at the top of the screen -- player characters will sometimes have their PvP rank symbol displayed to the right of it, and the Veteran Rank symbol displayed to the left, if they are level 50+
    - It's fairly easy to tell just by the way the character is acting, how they're running, etc..

I use an addon called Azurah which improves the target health bar quite a bit. It makes it so player characters have blue health bars, hostile NPCs have red, friendly NPCs you can attack have yellow, and NPCs you cannot attack have green. It does a bunch of other crap too but I find that to be one of the more useful features. Check it out here: http://www.esoui.com/downloads/info602-Azurah-InterfaceEnhancedforUpdate6.html
