Well, i guess it's just me.
But I have never got it into my head how they can make players able to block, without a shield. Parry sure, like single hits but never ever anything like magic projectiles or arrows.

greatsword could be big enough that u can use both hands on both ends to block something equaly big....
staff can have magical properties that can block stronger than a piece of wood does....
dual-wields.... you get the idea.
None should be as effective as an actual shield, but i see it happening.
