Spell Critical VS Weapon Critical

This may be an obvious question but again, I keep hearing differently:

Does Spell Critical affect weapon based attacks? or stamina based attacks?
Or does distance determine whether it or Weapon Critical figures into the calculation?

The reason I'm asking is someone mentioned on one of the threads that a skill like Puncturing Sweep, although Magicka based is affected by Weapon Critical since it is a melee type skill.

This morph of Puncturing Strikes (which is the one my templar uses) now uses stamina, weapon damage, and weapon crit for sure:

I thought that all abilities that cost magicka used spell damage and spell crit now in 1.6.

Thats what I thought too. I was just trying to figure out where people were getting their info.

@Valymer is correct. If magicka based, it will scale off spell dam/crit and max mag.

In regards to info about crit ratings it is essential to check the date of your sources, as 1.6 overhauled the system. Old threads are obsolete.

The confusion is most likely being caused by players using outdated information.

Pre-patch 1.6, all melee range abilities, whether class or weapon abilities, scaled off of weapon crit. All ranged abilities scaled off of spell crit. This was very confusing, so ZOS decided to change it.

Now, after patch 1.6, all abilities that use stamina scale off of weapon power, max stamina, and weapon crit. All abilities that use magicka scale off of spell power, max magicka, and spell crit.
