So I am looking at buying a headset in the $50 range. Anyone have an opinion on what the best options are?

I don't know about best options (I'm far from an expert), but I got one of these and I've been happy with it:

Hey @UrQuan, I have that one too! :) I also recommend. I bought a wireless one, and it sits collecting dust for it isn't as comfy as that one.

I'm using Logitech ClearChat Comfort/USB Headset H390. Costs $25 at Amazon. I don't use them all the time, but I have used them for 6 hour straight with no comfort issue, and performance is good enough. Not sure that spending more will get you a better result.

    Logitech G430 here.

It's not $50 but having used this flat out since early Beta of ESO, I can't fault it. Very comfortable for those long PvP sessions and seems to be very durable.
Been here since Feb 2014 - You'd think I'd be half reasonable at this game by now...

$50 US? Spend a little bit more and get the Plantronics Gamecom 780/788 USB.

It is a beast! Extremely comfortable over-ear, full 7.1. Dolby Digital Surround. You won't get anything in the pricerange even remotely close to it in terms of quality/performance.

I would second this. The 7.1 surround is very good for the price, they are durable (I break stuff) and comfortable (I often wear them all day). The 780s are $59 USD on Amazon atm.

I don't like wearing big headsets around my head. The ones that fully cap my ears make my ears hot and the ones that sit on top of them make them ache after hours of gentle pressure, especially as I wear glasses.

I am using an in-ear set made by dedicated gaming accessories company, Razer. The model is the Hammerhead Pro:

    razer-hammerhead-pro-in-ear-headphones-custom-pc-review-6-588x392-b9b01.jpg

It works a bit like a mobile phone's headset, in that it has a mic attached. I also like the fact it takes next to no space and that makes it have a double role, as I also use it with mobile devices like phones/tablets etc. In my case, it also came with a free copy of their audio software Razer Surround 7.1, which I actually found works great when watching DVDs and stuff on the PC.

I'm only recommending it because I've been very satisfied with the product (I have no affiliation with the company) especially for the price. It costs between 45-55 usd which is around your budget area.

    I wouldn't really bother for $50 honestly.

Save up to around $100 and check out the Corsair lineups.

Agree, except the last part. Far better off buying some good headphones and a cheap clip on mic.

How about recommendations for any wireless headsets? Any good ones at a reasonable price? Logitech models seem to be leading contenders.

To anyone looking to purchase some headphones, I would strongly recommend saving your money until you have a minimum of $200 to spend. Skip over the headphones targeted towards gaming and look at some of the mid to higher tiered items. As @Shader_Shibes said, you can always get a cheap mic. A good set of headphones will last you years and offer usefulness beyond just gaming.

If you are willing to spend a little bit more money I got my Gamecom 780 with 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound.

    http://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-GameCom-780-Headset-Surround/dp/B00B1KJK22

Works like a charm and you can hear the precise direction people are running from towards you. P.S. Noise Cancelling like any real headset should have.

I've always been a fan of the Turtle Beach X12's and refurbished ones would be in your price range, but I actually just switched to the Razer Kraken. A bit more in price (Like around $70), but it has 7.1 surround sound and is still quite comfy (main reason I stuck with the X12's for a good many of years).

No $50 headset is worth a damn.

    These 2 are great:
    Skullcandy PLYR 1
    Astro A50

    This is ok:
    Logitech G930

Now there are others that are good/great but I haven't owned/used for extended periods of time. I like Razer products but I don't like their headsets. I've owned a few and don't like them. Turtle Beach the same, tried them but hate them.
