Tamriel needs a hero

For many of us, the cross-screen marketing messages interrupting our gameplay on Saturday was a tipping point that led us to seriously question whether ZOS wants our business. It was not solely the intrusive ads that caused us to collectively consider whether continuing to subscribe was "worth it" anymore, but the introduction of the ads on top of all the broken promises and unheeded feedback we've endured for the last year while continuing to pay a subscription fee to play the game.

In short, it was a simple, highly visible display of the ZOS Marketing team's disrespect for us as paying players.

I am sad to see many good players and contributors to the ESO community indicating that they will be cancelling their subscriptions in the coming week. For the record, I am still subbed and have been since launch.

I want those players to stay because I enjoy playing with them and reading their thoughts about the game here and in other places online. But in order for that to happen, I think a hero needs to step up to the plate to make things right with subscribers.

I'm not going to regurgitate the bad things that have happened to cause this tipping point to happen. As players and subscribers, we are well aware of these things. ZOS Management, Devs and Community Managers are also well aware.

Instead, I'd like to point out five things I love about this game and two ways to immediately begin to make amends with your subscribers.

5 Things I love:
1. Graphics/Music/World - I love exploring Tamriel. It's a beautiful, immersive world that I really enjoy spending time in.
2. Story/Charcters/Animations/Voice - Well done on all fronts. I love the main story line and all the quirky side quests that I get to explore.
3. Combat Variations - Despite being a togglemancer on my main toon, I really love how flexible the combat system is. I've been exploring a lot of new and unconventional builds and having a lot of fun doing it.
4. Caldwell's - I know a lot of people want various changes to these but I really enjoy being able to play quests from the other factions. When I started, I never thought of playing AD, but I really enjoyed it in Caldwell's so my next toon will probably be there. Caldwell's has broadened my horizons and opened up the possibility of many more months of questing and fun with a new character.
5. Community - As a member of and contributor to five guilds with 500 members each, I have made a lot of new friends and had hours of fun and conversation. I can still get my solo feels in by exploring for a few hours and come back to guild chat and have fun with 500 people at an auction or event.

Two Ways to Immediately Begin to Make Amends With Your Subscribers.
1. Allow subscriber's to opt-out of cross-screen marketing messages.
2. Allow subscribers with 300 days of accrued sub time in the 365 days preceding any DLC launch to keep the DLC rather than just rent it.

The two changes above don't fix the issues that I've not mentioned here in terms of what broke the trust between us. But they do allow us to stay on board with dignity while you fix the issues that still exist. Because staying on board while feeling continually disrespected is simply not a healthy option.

I do want to thank the Community Managers for finally allowing our thoughts to be heard without a lot of silencing over the last 48 hours. I know you have a tough job and have been placed in a horrible position by your employers. I'm trying to respect that fact as much as possible with this post by not regurgitating the past.

If you agree with what I had to say, I'd appreciate a comment so the thread stays bumped. If not, we can let it sink into Oblivion.

Thanks for reading.

Nicely said, and I have to agree with most of it. On-screen adverts were annoying enough, and if the game continues down a path where the Crown store is given more highlight than the fixing of bugs that have persisted since launch it's going to end up being a very dark age. One that Molag Bal wouldn't even go near.

Support the subs in some way. I'm sure we can all brainstorm some ideas how ZoS can do that for us, so let's get to it!

Although I cancelled my sub 20 minutes or so ago, sick of the debacle that is ESO Plus.

Fantastic game let down by a number of things, the truly underwhelming issue that is ESO Plus, is the straw that broke the camels back, I will still play, and other games as well, GTA5 is taking over my free time but till the game substantially improves in lacking areas, like game stability and then it will be ok for DLC, then I shall not be resubbing.

I'm bummed to hear about your sub but happy you will still play. It's players like you who care about the game that will really be missed. That's why I thought 300 of 365 days subbed would be good for DLC. Because a lot of people are quitting this week.

It's my hope that ZOS would implement the two items I suggested immediately so that all of the great players and contributors to this community who are leaving this week decide to come back.

But it would take someone with guts at ZOS to push back on whoever is making these terrible decisions in order to provide sufficient reason for subscribers to stay / come back.

It is not a goodbye, I have put enough money into Zeni and have supported since before Beta.

Don`t get me wrong, the game is fantastic, music/graphics etc etc.

But the stonewalling and lying, e.g the state of the game in PvP is atrocious, the intermittent lag and other factors, with no end in sight.

The way I see it, is all the money I have poured into the game has went into a number of things, but deeply suspicious of the fact, that it has went into console launch, and I am sorry, I have seen plenty of games from different genres be in a straight port to PC , dumbed down, terrible systems, and unoptimised, requiring loads of patches.

Zeni IMO will concentrate on consoles, and I really hope that they get the issues we have been suffering here, or at least some of them, not meaning that in a evil way, but then Zeni will have to take its collective head out of the sand and fix issues.

Game stability is absolutely essential in a game.

ESO Plus is not worth it IMO, at the moment, and I don`t see enough to tempt me to continue subbing, what is the point.

    Fanbois will say oh be patient, they are fixing stuff, aye they are fixing stuff and ignoring and lying and stonewall excuses about other things;

I been here since beta, on ESO, and my patience has ran out.

The game is so amazing on so many levels, and so many lovely touches about it, but they ignore and lie about other important factors.

And I am meant to continue paying a sub and get so little back in return?, but more lies while they concentrate on console...

The game infrastructure should be fixed first, lag sorted, optimised, before butterflying away to the consoles, guess what, probably same issues will occur there, and they will be even less forgiving that your long suffering PC players.

It seems to me that they dont`t care about PC players, and say oh its being worked on, and we are very dedicated to fixing stuff...

Sorry all I hear is blah blah blah, show me results, and I will be one of the first on the forums singing your praises. I am an honest guy and speak my mind, but the game I love is not getting all the TLC it needs and proper testing and game bugs and mechanics, and lag are essential to game stability, so fix it, instead of lying to us, way to go, disgruntling even your most loyal supporters like me, great idea...

I really love the idea of being able to own DLC after showing accrued subbed time in the game. Although I'm not sure it should be for the newest DLC. I would imagine this as something to come later on, once we are a few DLC in, and allowing long term subbed players to somehow own the older DLC first. I enjoy that you considered the fact that it needs to be a long term sub as of course just having a sub when a DLC releases wouldn't work - as people would just sub that month. Personally I don't plan on unsubscribing, so it doesn't really bother me not to own the DLC, but it would be nice if for some reason I can barely play for a month that I could own some of the DLC from my previous subscriber loyalty.

I do really love this game.. the quests, stories, graphics.. everything. I was disheartened about the cross screen advertisements though.

I think a hero needs to step up to the plate to make things right with subscribers.

Unfortunately, everyone at ZoS is busying counting the money they think they are going to make from Console release.

At this point, they've shown they don't give 2 craps about the PC customer base or the game. They just want to cash in on what they can get out of console before abandoning the game completely.

If we do see new content, it will most likely be content that was 90% done LAST YEAR. Imperial City and Osirim were shown off at Quake Con..it's pretty obvious they have been holding out on those so they can sell them as DLC. Imperial City and Osirim will probably be the LAST new content ESO ever sees.

I do agree that the community managers have a difficult job. Especially when ZoS is screwing up so badly.

I have total and utter respect for the community managers...they do a fantastic job and are probably the most under appreciated people at the company.

The console launch is killing this game if you ask me due to no new content and the ads aren't helping.

"And it's important to state that our decision to go with subscriptions is not a referendum on online game revenue models. F2P, B2P, etc. are valid, proven business models - but subscription is the one that fits ESO the best, given our commitment to freedom of gameplay, quality and long-term content delivery. Plus, players will appreciate not having to worry about being "monetized" in the middle of playing the game, which is definitely a problem that is cropping up more and more in online gaming these days. The fact that the word "monetized" exists points to the heart of the issue for us: We don't want the player to worry about which parts of the game to pay for - with our system, they get it all."
