I got a i7 3770k overclocked to 4.2 ghz and a gtx 670 2g also overclocked and I can't get a stable 60 frames to save my life. At least not anymore, usually games improve optimization don't they? Maybe I'm just getting fed up with it but it seems to be getting worse. Almost anytime i'm in combat I will get a big fps spike when going through my rotation. I get up to 100 frames sometimes other times it floats around 30-40 and the spikes drop to ~20-40 when i'm at 60+ in combat. Any help appreciated

try running the game without overclocked gear.

The reason that a cpu and a gpu run at a certain performance is cause they are designed that way. Drivers, and to a lesser extend games, expect them to function at those levels. Tempering with the performance can cause this kind of behaviour. If you overclock you should always be prepared to hit issues like this and feel fine with that. If you are not, then don't do it.

    I'm running the following:

    i7 3770k @ 4.0ghz
    GTX 670 4gb
    8gb ram
    Samsung 840 Pro SSD

Maybe list which exact settings you're using. I run 60 even in combat. I do drop to 45-50 fps in large towns/cities, but besides that it's quite smooth.

Not sure I totally agree with @Ranique -- it's quite common on the i7 3770k for an overclock. Although it runs hot due to Ivy-Bridge setup, it is quite the resilient little CPU.

I am on a different page that both of the previous posters. If you are overclocking both your cpu and gpu then my first question is what is your cooling like in your setup? Do you have enough cooling? When was the last time you dusted out your system. Both your cpu and gpu will start to downscale their performance when temps reach certain points. So if you have a dusty rig or your air flow is poor you could run into an issue here.

First are you using the stock cpu cooler on your I7? If so I would watch the overclock you were putting on it. Maybe lower the boost overclock to 4ghz for now. Your gpu could also be running too hot or if you don't have a stable overclock you are getting lots of artifacts that kill your fps performance.

First check your dust/air flow in your case. Then if that is all well remove your overclocks and see if the problem still exists. If you still have an issue after those two steps it is either a software/hardware issue.

actually the reason they run lower is because the company wants them to last longer, technically they are under clocked when shipped to commercial retailers. overclocking should have the opposite effect of what ur saying but i'll try it

Maybe it was this last patch.. I am in a similar situation where previously I could run everything maxed and be silky smooth. Now I have to run with my view distance at 60 to keep a stable fps.
