New Cash Shop Items is != Game Content

Just got back after a 6 month break just to see the cash shop popping up with new stuff for sale every day it seems. I just want to warn everyone that this is a slippery slope. Once you see a game dev company pushing more cash shop stuff, you'll know they already will start to value cash shop items over real game content. I hope they aren't trying to do a BW/EA on us...

hi, In before the lock :)

Yes we know, but the head of Zen gives the orders and the Devs carry them out.

That "no content" thing hasn't really worked out for other mmos. People play for a couple months then leave. People leaving = no long term commitment. No long term commitment = less money. I doubt ZOS are dumb enough to rely entirely on the cash shop.

Well I assume being free to play brought you back.
How do you propose they finance the game now?

I subbed because I don't believe in playing games for free.

Well, if everyone thought as you did there would have been no need for a Crown Store.

They are relying on console sales, and small incremental patches, I have asked Zen to give a timeline on their content, AAA titles know when their DLC is coming. Also DLC and patches to PS4 and X1 are not as simple as deciding a day, for X1 you have to get approval for a fix. I cannot see them patching every week on the consoles, it will not happen. Really think console was a bad idea the game would have been so much better if the dev costs were put in for PC. At this point the console is for the box sales. If it does well they will work on DLC if not, keep the cash shop running with minimum fixes.

The game has entered a "Unlimited" stage and it makes sense that the first priority for Zeni is to populate Crown Store with items, because Unlimited has boosted player population, they are still playing through the content, and while you VR14 guys paid for the servers with your subscriptions, these new guys still need to pay for the servers with the money they spend on pets and such.

And to be honest I think creating a cat mount and slapping it into the Crown Store doesn't "steal" any time and effort that is continuously being invested into creating new zones, quests, characters, monster models, doodads, sounds, voices.

If ZOS would have fixed all the long standing issues across the entire game they would have no need for a Crown Store...they did this to themselves...

Neither do I. That's why I paid 50 bucks upfront, and will continue to pay for expansion content delivered.

It is content and it is in the game. However, it's not the kind of content that is generally appreciated by players and it can feel insulting to see so much new content in the Crown Store and so little new playable content relative to "payable" content.

It's a fair point, but those creating one off items for the crown store may not be the same teams dedicated to creating new content. It certainly takes a lot more work to create a new zone, new questlines, etc... than it does to create a companion pet. I do hope Zenimax does keep the momentum going and starts churning out some new features and content soon, though. The transition has been fairly smooth, but a dearth of new stuff anytime soon will harm it.

In MMOs, the majority seem to prefer to have vanity clothing items, pets, mounts, etc..in cash shops (as well as attainable ones in-game -- as there already are).

As long as they work on content AND keep putting new vanity items in the cash shop, I am all for it. I've seen Devs continue to pump out content BECAUSE a cash shop for vanity items helped keep their income flowing (ie, The Secret World). Don't get me wrong, TSW is a great game but end-gamers like things to have a variety of things to do, not just raids, dungeons, pvp, new content, OR a variety of vanity items..but it's safe to say many will like all of the above. Not all, but many.

Yep am like you if I play it I pay for it. Seems like the right thing to do so we help pay for the costs to run it and update it!

Ever the optimist, I have faith that the game will continue strong even with an item store.

I, for one, bought a six month subscription and am about to by more crowns, meaning they will be getting more from me than they would have with just a subscription. Not everyone will spent more than $15 a month in the crown store, but I'm sure many will.

Don't worry, they're not dumb enough to think 'limited time offers' are what's going to keep us playing this game. They already confirmed at least three DLC's coming, and Dark Brotherhood/Thieves' Guild are coming within the next couple of updates. Hopefully, we won't have to pay for them.

The way I see it, ZOS can't win. Any way the crown show is structured people will complain.

All I can say is at least its not pay to win currently.
Been here since Feb 2014 - You'd think I'd be half reasonable at this game by now...

They have been talking about the same dlc, before the game was in beta.

Imperial city is pretty old hat info and dlc to be honest.

After all it was talked about And shown at quake on last year.

All the "dlc" was meant to have come out every month originally.

The problem now is the current content isn't new since beta and old players are running out of stuff to do months ago.

And new players will have the same problem in a month or so.
