Are they meant to go very slow, Ive been at rank 6 for weeks and I pvp maybe two or three nights a week. Is this normal?

Yes.

They're there to provide extremely long term character progression from PvP and incentive to PvP.

Yup annoyingly, and if you reroll then it takes forever.

I am still trying to get up to the alliance rank on my main.

But the more pvp you do, the more you will rank up.

There is a lot of ways to get ap, ask the ap farmers hehe.

Go where the fighting is, get the ticks.

Hand in dailys in Cyrodill, that gives you AP too.

The more you do for your alliance, the faster you will rank up.

It is amazing how some generate AP super fast, I haven't figured that out yet.

AP goes towards alliance ranks, and every rank comes with a skill point, every 2 alliance ranks comes with a new title and armour dye, then obviously in the assault/support skill trees too.

Its worth doing IMO

Plus you can buy stuff with AP also and a few other perks...

Actually, I think ticks are no good now that fights last 10 minutes instead of an hour or 3. Ticks became crappy when camps went away, which shortened fights due to not being able to get back to the fight and rezing with enemies around being difficult. Haven't been in a fight longer than 30 minutes since then. That's the main reason I'd like them back, with changes obviously.

I haven't seen my assault or defense abilities level in weeks. I swear they are literally at the same spot of level 4 as they were in January.

Well, at rank 6 it should go pretty fast. Get yourself an AP/hr counter like pointificator or something, check how much you're getting. If you're getting less than 10K/hr you are doing something very wrong and you should amend your playstyle accordingly.

I've seen quite a few 24+ man groups tower farming the same 5-6 people, and if you're one of them - yeah, it would be slow.

Best AP is solo or small group fighting a large amount of different people. Always kill a lot more people than you get killed and than you have in your group.
