Subtitles on Everything

Nocifer Deathblade
Hello,

I am Deaf gamer. There is no kind of subtitles in "movies" as well as voices from NPCs when I play. Only text that I receive is via quest dialogues.. That's not sufficient.. Please give full access to subtitle option for everything from NPCs. TV and Movies have full access to subtitles (thanks to laws) for 10% of population who need it.. Please consider it (no laws for games yet) for 10% of gamers as well. Thanks.

    Hello @ZOS_GinaBruno, @ZOS_JessicaFolsom,

If there was a setting to have "Chat Bubbles" show up for NPC's that would resolve this issue

Yes. That's what I am asking. Chat Bubbles or their comments in text window would solve everything. I get rather discouraged when they were talking in voices during my quests unable to understand them at all.. I had to make guesses based on their behaviors instead.. It sucks..

If you go into the chat window settings, there is a box you can check for NPC dialouge. It's turned off by default.

Really? There is one? I'll have to take a look again in options after fixing the version fail 209 error that I can't launch from Steam Client at all so I can get in game again to check. I am surprised that I didn't catch that chat bubble option in options.. Thanks for the information. I'll be happy if it covers all npc-related voice dialogues..

    Hi Nocifer.

Adding to earlier post, I would recommend making a separate chat tab for NPC chat and toggle off most guild and zone chat. The zone chats with guild shouts or guild chat with WTS may flood out the NPC chat. Even more so when this happens during boss encounters.

I'm not deaf but I like having subtitles and have been playing with the "Harven's Subtitles" addon. It is fantastic. Puts subtitles for just about everything spoken that goes on around you. Very well done; very handy. I'd highly recommend trying it out.

Edit: Forgot to mention that yes, they should have this built in to the game, but currently the in-game subtitles miss a LOT.

Unfortunately the option to show NPC dialogue in the chat box doesn't include everything they say, and Harven's subtitles only includes stuff that's shown in chat.

It's a vast improvement over not having it on and will be enough to follow quests, but you will still miss 'ambient' dialogue (comments NPCs make as you're going past) and some things quest related NPCs say as you're walking up.

It would be really nice if there was a way for all the dialogue to be displayed as text. I'm not deaf but I often have to play with the sound turned off (or the room is so loud I wouldn't be able to hear it anyway) and it's frustrating to know I'm missing things because of it. Chat bubbles, subtitles, in the chat box, anything would be better than nothing.

For the first issue, close and reopen the launcher. If this is the same root issue as on the regular PC version, that fixes it.

For the second, the NPC option in Chat will give you all the quest related dialog that comes spoken from an NPC, and from the scripted scenes (where the NPCs are talking and your standing there watching the events) The NPC chat does not show the random comments from NPCs as you walk by, for the most part. But you will get the important stuff. I seem to remember seeing some of the random commentary in Chat from NPCs but that was early on in the Beta.

Also, you can set up different Chat Channels so that you can have one that is only NPC Chat or one that is NPC chat and Say/Tell. This way you have a Chat Stream that is only stuff said directly to you. If you want to see zone chat, then you can click on that tab for that channel. I would set up a NPC/Say/Tell for what you want to do as Zone Chat could easily push down the NPC chat before you get a chance to read it all.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

^^ Enable the NPC filter in your Chat Tab options. It'll help a little.

If they can add in "Chat Bubbles" for other players, why not for the NPC's Quest Dialogue? With Zone Chat and Guild Chat from up to 5 Guilds, my "Chat Window" is scrolling through lines almost as fast as a Las Vegas Slot machine. It's not very user friendly to have to use that for Quests also. They could do this within quest setup so only the person talking to the quest NPC would see it.

I would like to add my vote to more subtitles. Most of the Craglorn stuff doesn't have it, including the quest scenes, to the point where I have gone through The Missing Guardian four times so far and still don't know all of what the plot-important NPC at the end is saying.

It covers everything. I turned it on and I'm not deaf but sometimes you miss or hear things wrong.
Also you can customize the chat tab to show or not show other things so that it fits your play styles

Apart from Harven's Subtitles there are also other addons which can display subtitles - RAETIA InfoHub and Wykkyd's Full Immersion.

Thank you for the suggestion on Harven's Subtitles! I definitely will include that as addon! :)

I am able to get in ESO.exe (bypassing Steam for time being due to 209 error) and added add-on Harven's Subtitles as well as chat bubble option. I believe that it wasn't even in options last year when it launched and I wrote a proposal.. I guess that it was added later on late last year?

I am very happy about the subtitles! Thanks for the suggestions! Only one problem I have with it is that on my 5760x1080 resolution (max quality which is so beautiful) is that the subtitle is on far right side of 3rd monitor to my right. I have to turn my head every time subtitle shows up. There seems is no way to move subtitle from far right corner of my eye to 2nd center monitor. ;(

I've been wanting this since day one playing ESO. I'm not 100% deaf, but I have 60% hearing loss and, while i do wear hearing aids, I have difficulty when there is a lot of noise going on around me so I play with sound turned off.

The NPC text in the chat dialog is tiny, and you have to know there is dialog going on in order to see it. I would love the option to turn on subtitles (closed captioning, basically) or even chat bubbles, as someone else mentioned.

Check in the Addon Settings, usually they have a Lock on the window. You can turn that off and re-position as needed then turn it back on. I haven't used that Addon so I cannot say for sure that it has this option but most Addons usually do.

Nice. Will check that out tonight to see if I can unlock and re-position the subtitle.. If I can then all problems will be solved all thanks to add-on.. Add-on feature in ESO is god-send. :)
