How often do you experience Game Crashes while in Cyrodiil?

Goldie
Goldie
✭✭✭✭✭
I have been experiencing terrible gameplay due to lag and crashes. Sometimes the crashes cause my video card to stop responding, and I am dropped all the way to the desktop. This seems to happen a LOT more in Cyrodiil then the PvE zones, How many of you are experiencing the same issues?

(I have contacted support several times, tried ALL of their recommended fixes, to NO avail.)
((If anyone is having similar issues please help!))

About once per day on average.

Some days 3-4 times, some days not at all. A nice bell curve, if you will.

Ever since the release of update 6 im crashing every 10-15 minutes and its maddening... I have tried lists and lists of fixes provided by ZOS, and the fixes all seem to be on my end, whether they try and tell me its my router, or something to do with a Microsoft services issue. I KNOW that I am not the only one having these issues, yet ZOS claims its a player side issue. I say its poor programming... Either way, I would like to be able to enjoy the game I bought and subscribed to for over a year now.

I get the same crashes in PvE as I do in PvP just not as frequent. The crash that involves my video card (your display driver has stopped working and has recovered) has me really worried about my system. I get ZERO crashes or video card issues on the other 10 games I play, online and offline. I'm scared that this issue will cause permanent damage to my system.

BTW, My system has double the recommended system capabilities this game requires.

I experience Crashes All the time
I have contacted customer support over this issue numerous times. I have tried list after list of fixes suggested by ZOS customer service and techs and NOTHING has fixed the issue.

In some cases my video display driver stops working altogether!

Maybe the problem doesn't lie with our systems ZOS!!!

I just uninstalled the game and im trying a fresh install to see if this helps. If it doesn't then im done! I don't want this sub-par code to fry my video card or cpu...

So far I have tried all of the following:

1.Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.

2.Right click on the msconfig.exe program and choose Run as administrator.

3.On the General tab at the top, click on Selective startup.

    4.Uncheck Load startup items.

5.Click on the Services tab and check the Hide all Microsoft services box.

6.Click the Disable all button at the bottom

7.Click Apply, and then click OK.

    8.Restart your computer.

When your computer boots up again, it will be in selective startup mode. Try the game again, and see if you have different results. If everything works correctly, then one of the service or startup programs was causing the issue. To troubleshoot which program is the source of the difficulty, re-enable a few programs at a time and try running the game again.

Once you encounter difficulties, use the process of elimination to determine exactly which program is the source of the issue. As soon as you have determined which program seems to cause the crash, please let us know so that we can work with you to resolve the issue.

When you have finished this troubleshooting, be sure to turn selective startup off. This is done by opening the msconfig window again and selecting Normal startup. Click Apply, then click OK, and then restart the computer.

    Option 1: Diabling Crossfire/SLI-

To disable crossfire: right-click your desktop and select "Catalyst Control Center". In the upper-left, click "Graphics", then "CrossfireX". In the main area of the window, uncheck the "Enable Crossfire" option. Click "OK" to accept the changes and close the Control Center.

To disable SLI: right-click your desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel". Expand the "3D Settings" section and click "Set SLI Configuration". Make sure that "Do Not Use SLI Technology" is selected in the right frame. Click "apply" and close the Control Panel.

    Option 2: Launcher update-

By default, your launcher files are found here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\Launcher . Delete this entire file and head to your Account page to click the "Download Game" button on the right side of the page. The game will then automatically repopulate the Launcher folder and contents.

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Open C:\Users\Your Username Here\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live (or liveeu for EU server)

    Locate your UserSettings.txt file

Locate the following strings, which may have a different number at the end, and make sure you change them to the following:

    SET RequestedNumJobThreads "0"
    SET RequestedNumWorkerThreads "0"

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

In attempts to help provide you with a possible resolution, I ran across a Microsoft support article regarding "Display drivers stop responding" which closely resembles what you are dealing with and we ran trough adjusting your Visual Effects for best performance and you ran and update for your Direct X 9.

We found this to help you out greatly in which helped you regain access to the game entirely but just by chance you run into a similar issue, check over this link as you can run Microsoft Fix It to automatically fix any errors that it may find. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946

I experience Crashes All the time
Here are other things ive done but HAVE NOT HELPED!

    Black screen
If you observe a black screen after pressing Play, please refer to the potential fixes detailed below:

    #1. Admin mode
Right click the ESO launcher icon
    Click Run as Administrator

#2. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date
Look at your DxDiag, are your drivers from 2012 or before? Yes? Then they need to be updated.

    To do so:
    • Nvidia Video Cards: http://www.nvidia.com click "Drivers" and choose Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.
    • AMD Video Cards: http://www.amd.com click "Drivers & Support" and click the "Find your driver" button.
    • Other Video Cards: You should contact the computers manufacturer for driver updates.
If after updating your drivers they still appear to be from before 2013, it is possible that the manufacturer stopped producing updates for this model of card

#4. Make sure that the latest version of DirectX is installed on your system
You'll find more information here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ie/windows/which-version-directx#which-version-directx

#5. Adjust your video card to run the game at High Performance.

    Nvidia Video Card.
Open the Nvidia control panel. This can be done usually by clicking the appropriate icon in the bottom right of the computer on the Task Bar. You can also right-click directly on your desktop and you should see Nvidia Control Panel in the list.
Under 3D settings, select the Manage 3D Settings. The Manage 3D Settings window displays on the right.
Click the Program Settings tab at the top in the Window on the right.
Your first step is to select a program to customize. Click the drop down and select eso.exe.
Your second step shows a list of settings for the program. We need to look for the Feature Power Management Mode and change the option on the right to Prefer maximum performance.
At the bottom select Apply and close out of the Nvidia Control Panel.
Now try running the game as administrator

    ATI Video Card.
Open the Catalyst Control Center. This can usually be done by clicking the appropriate icon in the bottom right of the computer on the Task Bar. You can also right-click directly on your desktop and you should see Catalyst Control Center in the list.
The Catalyst Control Center will open. In the top right corner is a button that says Preferences. Make sure that Standard View is selected.
Next, select Gaming, then under Gaming Performance, select Standard 3D settings.
Move the slider to Optimal Performance.
Click Apply and close the Catalyst Control Panel.
Now try running the game as administrator.

#6. Adjusting the Screen Resolution in the UserSettings File.
The default location of this file is \Users\*USERNAME*\My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\UserSettings.

If your native screen resolution is 1080x1920 you need to modify this file as follow:

    From
    SET FullscreenHeight "0"
    SET FullscreenWidth "0"
    to
    SET FullscreenHeight "1080"
    SET FullscreenWidth "1920"

#7. Try to delete the ShaderCache.cooked file
The default location for the file is C:\Users\*USERNAME*\My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live.

After that file is deleted, run the game as administrator, and it will recompile that file.

If the file is missing or empty, it is likely that something is preventing the system from creating that file correctly (which is an issue we are currently investigating).

    Game crashes during cinematic
Locate the The Elder Scrolls Online game file. This file can normally be found in:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client

    or

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online EU\game\client
1.Once that file is located, right-click the file and select Properties at the bottom of the list.
2.Once the Properties window is open, select the Compatibility tab.
3.Select the option to “Run this program in compatibility mode” and from the drop-down menu select “Windows XP SP3” (it may say Service Pack 3).
4.Select the option “Always run this program as an Administrator”
5.For ease of use, right-click the eso.exe file and select “Send To…”
6.From the subsequent slide-out menu, select “Desktop (Create Shortcut)”.

This will allow a very easy, quick way of opening a game running in compatibility mode.

Possible resolution to crashes / lockups / not loading after clicking Play on some laptops:

Some laptops include Nvidia Optimus Technology, which is basically a GPU switch that starts with an Intel HD4000 and will then switch to another integrated GPU for higher end performance. We are investigating as to whether The Elder Scrolls Online makes the transition or not, and believe that changing Nvidia’s settings may alleviate the issue.

How to select the preferred graphics processor:

For the first method, you can right click on the desktop icon for The Elder Scrolls Online and hover over the option "Run with graphics processor." A window will pop up to the right of your cursor. Select the option "High-Performance NVIDIA processor." This option may not be available, as it has to be enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel.
1.The second method sets up a High Performance profile for The Elder Scrolls Online. This method also works for setting up High Performance profiles on machines with older Nvidia Cards with a minor change; instead of selecting the processor, you select the performance option of High Performance.
    2.Open the NVIDIA Control Panel
    3.Select "Manage 3D Settings"
    4.Select "Program Settings" tab
5.The first heading is “1. Select a program to Customize:”
6.a. Click the Add button to the right.
7.b. Browse to and select the application executable you wish to create a profile for. (It will be “ESO.exe,” located in the directory in which you installed the game.)
8.The second option is "2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program:"
9.a. Click the drop down and select High-performance NVIDIA processor.

Both of these methods are based on current information posted on Nvidia's support website, and the instructions may be different based on your installed version of the Nvidia Control Panel. We do not guarantee this will fix the graphical errors that are occurring, but believe that it may help.

In Cyrodiil I usually crash once per evening. For some reason always someone out of my group crashes in vet Spindleclutch, Ive had it twice in a single dungeon run. If you crash a lot try to disable all your addons and add them one at a time to see which are causing the crashes. Some guild mates said it solved most of their crashes.

Anywhere else in the game I might crash once a day, if I ever do.

The moment I step into Cyrodiil, it doesnt matter what campaign or faction, I have 30-40 minutes tops before I crash

Sometimes sooner. It becomes quite annoying.

I have literally tried everything and the issues seem to be getting worse. My guild thinks I have angered some Devs to the point that they sit in a basement somewhere waiting for me to try and log on so they can crash me before I make it out of the character select screen...

Was looking for almost never. It is true that my guildies range from some, to little to always. We have ironed it down to what your computers power is like gives it the ability to push through a crash. On my machine, I have actually had times when my game goes solid white screen (lagsploit is happening) yet I dont crash. If I step away (backpedal from the fight) It will slowly fade back in.

Since 2.03 though I have had the odd crash out and bug submit from interactions both in Cyrodil and PvE. That might be I need to do a file repair though, or an addon.

I experience Crashes All the time
    I have been at this for a solid 9 days trying to find a solution, and today I FINALLY made some progress! These are the results of my digging;

    1. Nvidia Video Cards need to have the Power settings adjusted to the maximum levels (specifically for ESO), to avoid Display Driver issues.

    ALSO -> If your native screen resolution is 1080x1920 you need to modify your UserSettings.txt file as follows;
    From
    SET FullscreenHeight "0"
    SET FullscreenWidth "0"
    to
    SET FullscreenHeight "1080"
    SET FullscreenWidth "1920"

    2. If you are using a Modem running into a Router, you need to bypass the Router and complete a DNS flush on the modem to avoid any packet loss.
To do this ZOS has posted instructions at this link: https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9179/track/AvP5QwrdDv8S~VIdGtMe~yILdsUqUC75Mv9Z~zj~PP_Q

    3. Lastly, if you are using the 'Minion' AddOn Manager, or the 'OverWolf' program from TeamSpeak3, both may have invasive services running in the background, sending information packets alongside those sent and received from ESO. To see if either of these programs have hijacked your "ISP Highway" follow these steps;
      • 1. Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.
      • 2. Right click on the msconfig.exe program and choose Run as administrator.
      • 3. Click on the Services tab and check the Hide all Microsoft services box.
      • 4. Once you have the hidden the crucial Microsoft Services you will be able to scroll through the list of programs.
      • 5. If you find ANY mention of 'OverWolf' or 'Minion' on that list, check them and click Disable.
      • 6. Once you have disabled either of the programs, if they are present at all, click Apply and Restart your Computer.
      • 7. As soon as you are able to, be sure to uninstall either or both of these programs, apparently they are NOT compatible with ESO.

I hope this helps anyone else that is suffering through the same issues that I was. So far I have been in-game for nearly 2 hours without a single crash.

I would like to personally thank @ZOS Support Team for putting up with my constant e-mails, (not the friendliest ive sent), and doing everything that they could to help, after digging and trying fix after fix looking for a solution I have a new found respect for the job that they do for us. It is NO easy task to find solutions to every problem we encounter, let alone reproduce them in order to do so! You guys & gals are awesome! (and very patient).

I would also like to thank all of you here on the forums for the messages and support in helping me arrive at a workable solution!

Lastly, if you are using the 'Minion' AddOn Manager, or the 'OverWolf' program from TeamSpeak3, both may have invasive services running in the background, sending information packets alongside those sent and received from ESO. To see if either of these programs have hijacked your "ISP Highway" follow these steps;

        I hope it lasts.

I have had "success" in the past doing all that stuff, only for it to return at a later date. It is the intermittent nature of this crashing problem, that every thing I try has the placebo effect of seeming to solve the issue for a while.

I never crash until a certain guild comes within the area I am in.
