The Greenshade zone chat became fairly heated & nasty earlier tonight. Would go as far as to say its the worst I've ever read.
Thank goodness its a rare occurrence.

That is pretty much it. Most of the time, it's people talking about the game, WTS or Guild Recruitment, or asking for/providing help. Sometimes there is some good natured trash talking, but that is not typically offensive stuff.

Every once is a while, yes, the chat gets derailed. I just either go to another zone, if I need to, or go to a chat tab that does not have the Zone option enabled.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

This one thinks there is a way to turn off zone chat, yes?

There is a way to turn off zone chat, yes.

That works if you aren't attempting to do anything that needs zone chat. Ask questions or ask for help as examples. New players that might not be in guilds yet really can't turn off the zone chat.

One of the worst zones I've noticed is Stonefalls. Last night was a not so wonderful mix of condescending comments, in-jokes from a group of trolls, wts spam about ***, mustache rides, and "your mom" statements. I really wouldn't blame new players for heading for the door. Nothing was welcoming or helpful. Some players did try, and got snide sniping shots from the trolls for their effort. This isn't about "adult conversation"; this is people who are intentionally trolling the starting area where new players will always be found.

@Maidenname I believe the max is 100, as we used to run out of room when there were masses of blocked spam bots back at launch.

Players who reach that level however, and should they continue it should probably be reported under actual harassment tickets, ZOS might just give them a warning about it but at least they would know to knock it off or be banned if they continue it.

Again, this seems to be a mostly US-centric problem. I have heard so many stories about games where chat on the US servers or during US peak hours is full of jerks, idiots, haters and trolls, but EU servers or EU hours are nice and civil. I honestly wonder why.

If you spent much time watching television in the US you would know. Even the news is full of jerks, idiots, haters and trolls. It's sad, really, because I'm an American. Count your blessings you live in a more genteel society.

The concept of free speech doesn't apply in a private setting like this or the game, the owners of the service have total control over who can say what.

Whatever happened to "Sticks and Stones?"

zone: Hey, I'm new to the game. Any tips for gear or quests?

troll: I have custom fit coldharbor pants you can have for 5k.

troll: If you're too dumb to follow the arrows for quests you shouldn't bother to play.

zone: Can anyone make me a destruction staff?

troll: I can make you a hand-crafted anatomically accurate male body part for 2k

troll: Was that the one I saw your mom using?

Gosh. I wonder what happened to "sticks and stones". This isn't name calling. This is people who are harassing new players, sometimes by doing things the newbies might not recognize as inaccurate or misleading. The people who want to have adult conversation between themselves can always make a group. They don't have to be anywhere near each other to use /group chat that would leave all the other people who aren't interested in the "adult" [to use the term loosely] conversation out of it.

The Chat in Zone 1 reminds me a of a dog I used to have when I was a kid. I have seen other dogs do the same thing. Whenever we would go for a walk, he would come out of the house and let off a few barks just to let everyone know he was there and a force to be reckoned with. Then he would settle down and not vocalize again.

So, I sometimes find the zone one chat to be just that, a bunch of yapping dogs telling everyone how tough they are. Then once they start playing the game, they focus on that. Zone 2 never seems to have any of this, nor do the VR zones.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

The /zone is like it always has been. Now I may or may not have started a **** [Link] war in Stormhaven yesterday for fun, but there's no reason to go raging to the forums about it  It is a general channel so expect people to voice their opinions and have fun trolling or something else. ESO still has a great community with helpful veterans and nice new players, there are of course always exceptions, but the ESO players are generally always nice and more so than any other MMO I have played, perhaps with GW as the exception. These aren't "kids" my friend, these are adults having fun in a game designed for people to have fun in

That they do and what they are taking away is listed in the code of conduct addendum. Everything else is fair game. The point is the more restrictive and the fewer freedoms of speech allowed, the fewer players will be part of their community.

Can someone show me where free speech covers the idiot jerks in game? Last I knew this isn't about our rights in a Nation. nope this is about what is in the rules of ZoS. Isn't harassment against those rules and language in zone chat would be covered by that.

Harassment is included and what I referred to about freedoms concerning speech has less than nothing to do with the Nations freedoms. I never mentioned any nation, at all. The more freedoms removed from a game = fewer people willing to play said game. That's just how it is. Can you imagine if the profanity filter was manditory? We have people complaining about the M rating not being "mature" enough. I'd venture a pretty solid guess that if cursing was not allowed, many people wouldn't play. This is just an example of a freedom of speech that could be removed at any time if ZOS wanted to do so. They wouldn't do that because it would cost them players. Instead they provide ways to turn on and off such filters, in the same manner they do the Zone chat tab itself. If it bothers you, you get rid of it. That's how opting out works. Harassment is something that is severe and undoubtedly giving inaccurate information during some dumb zone chat conversation would not be considered harassment.
You can be an "idiot jerk" all you want in game and it's not against the code of conduct for players.
That being said, most of the time I have zone chat off, not even because it's annoying at times but because constant text ruins immersion for me.

Where do we draw the line with "Freedom of Speech"? Was the fraternity in Oklahoma just "idiot jerks"? Was that "Freedom of Speech? I have all but quit ever going to the ESO Face Book page because of the vile and childish post's there. My choice. Let them rant, it doesn't compromise my gaming. But when I am playing in game, recruiting in chat for my guild, helping new players with questions, giving directions to banks and dye stations, and trying to honestly help people, and all I hear is about your body parts and someones mother, well, it just doesn't belong imo. Yes, we can turn off chat, they can also whisper their trash to one another.
The community in this game is incredible with really great people. Saying stupid stuff is gonna happen, but this is about the vile, hurtful, racist and sexist comments and verbal attacks on others that is becoming more abundant in last few weeks. I love this game, will continue to play every day, will keep my chat on in order to visit and help others, and will also ignore some and yes, I will report players for going too far. I have already reported several and asked ZOS about what is reportable. It is up to us to make this a better game for everyone. Be a responsible, helpful player because there are more of us than them and the community makes this game awesome.

Report what you feel you need to report and let the admins take care of it how they see fit I suppose. Personally, I don't think I've ever seen a single thing worth my time reporting in any mmo's concerning chats but it sounds like I'm wound a little looser than ya. :)

This is what happens when the game goes B2P, the overall community drops because the people that aren't as serious about the game flood into it and quite frankly don't care what others think/want.

Also ignore will only hold so many jerks. It is up to ZoS to over see the chat and kick people that break it. ZoS you created a great RP game and then you allow jerks to ruin it. You already have lost a ton of people over the B2P thing, you really think the people that act like little brats in chat will support you? You already made enough mistakes with the game let us not ruin anything else in it please!

You have tools to deal with this yourself. Ignore and report.

I'm one who tends not to judge and I really hate using the report button as I was taught not to be a "snitch" and I prefer to mind my own business; having said that, I've lived in some of the lowest areas around the US and the kind of crap you see in /zone sometimes is beyond anything Ive ever heard in person.

I wouldn't call most of whats being discussed as conversations but rather its usually a case of one-ups where someone says something dumb and then others will chime in to basically try to be more outrageous/offensive than the last. A good example is the Saturday before last, I was in Riften on a Sat night and someone said something dumb about *** and the conversation ended up with the best butt plug to wear while running over kids in the park.....wtf?! It's this kind of stuff that is out of hand. While ignore does work immediately, it fills up fast if you ignore everyone of these kinds of fools and for ever one that is reported and action taken against there are plenty more who replace them it would seem. Im not a fan of stifling freedoms on any level but there often gray areas and this is deffinitely one of them.

Personally, I don't think I should have to turn off /zone as its designed to be something useful to all players. I manage to get by just fine though and use the report for extreme cases like the one listed above.
There is nothing here of interest to any nations; as a matter of fact, there is nothing here but people.

Problem is you cant control other people. What you think is against the rules might not be. I just put people on ignore or in starter areas just turn of zone chat altogether. I know no matter how much I try I cannot control what other people do. Zenimax isnt going to sit in zone chat all day babysitting it. Thats why they give us tools like ignore etc.

I think the people who are so outraged and offended by rude language in zone chat, of all places, are just as immature as the ones crudely chatting. A grown-up would just ignore such an insignificant thing and carry on with what they were doing. What a sheltered life you must have led.

What's funny is a few days ago I was on Auridon and new players were asking questions trying to learn and some idiot was telling them "****ing goggle it stupid noob zone chat isn't for asking your moronic questions and annoying people its for fun chat." I was ignoring the idiot and trying to help them but he just kept going on and on until almost everyone stopped talking so I private messaged a couple people to tell them they were perfectly fine asking their questions in zone chat and did my best to help them. After thinking about it an hour or so I wish I had reported him because in effect he was harassing the new players who were just looking for help.

    SUGGESTION WITH A REALISTIC RESOLUTIONS

Here is a real idea...delete zone chat entirely.
Fix and enhance the lfg tool and for traders...create social gathering buildings.

Huge buildings in each realm where ppl can port into to trade.
    ^Same idea for guild recruitment
^Same for lfg dungeons and trials or raids

Then ppl will use /s and limit /y to only work in very short distances only outside of towns and cities
