No children in ESO! Hermaeus Mora knows why!

So on ESO Live they shared this bit of information:
randolphbenoit - Why no children in the game? Feels unreal only adults and chickens everywhere...

Hermaeus Mora knows...

Hermaeus Mora is the prince over Knowledge and Fate and I have been wondering how this could fit into the lore of ESO. Is it possible what we are experiencing isn't actually happening? That ESO is somehow just a memory of some sort?
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
That's right... Horse.

I wouldn't expect them to go down the"and it was all a dream" route. I mean I really hope they have more creative integrity than that.

If I'm not mistaken, Skyrim is the only Elder Scrolls Game with children.
All other games take place before Skyrim, which can mean only one thing!

In the beginning of the 4th era Hermaeus Mora has cursed women and wo-mer (lol) with childbirth.

exactly my thoughts and dreams as well.
i hated it in skyrim that there was little "NORD" children and no other race, i honestly dont even see any reason for there to ever be any children in any game i play, ever :)

You don't see the children in ESO because they are all taken from their parents at birth, sternly indoctrinated, and only let back into the world once they pass their stereotype proficiency exam. You want to know why every guard in Skyrim thinks they took an arrow to the knee? Childhood indoctrination. Why is Skyrim the first game where one sees children out and about? Look closely and notice how no one else reacts to them, and they are unkillable immortals...your character is having a psychotic break with reality.

If I had to guess: it would be because of the Justice System. Allowing players to run around murdering children might be a little too much for the developers.

Some countries look down upon games with children getting killed in them... When they first created ESO they wanted a lower rating, but as the game went along the rating got older and children never added. ESO live (in beta) explained this

World of warcraft has children in it everywhere. Admittedly i don't think you can kill any of them (at least now as i do remember attacking some as Horde in Stormwind once ages ago)

So just having children about is not really an issue.

Combined with all the corruption, greed, violence and oppression inflicted by their own hand, the domination of Molag Bal and living under the constant terror of the impending planemeld was the final straw in an already tenuous psychological balance.

Unable anymore to justify inflicting such a future on another generation of defenseless innocence, the people of Tamriel have made the conscientious choice to abstain from having children.

Given all they have endured, they can't help seeing it as a purely selfish attempt to cling to an illusion of normalcy and security in a world it seems no longer has any to offer them.

lol. I see many are but my original post was legitimate and sincere. Hermaeus Mora "Knows" why we don't have children. Maybe Hermaeus Mora did something to the children or Hermaeus Mora did something to us. Perhaps the prince didn't to anything to anyone but has the knowledge of what happened.

Perhaps we ARE in a Dragon Break and Hermaeus Mora, being the price of Knowledge and Fate is the only one that is actually aware that we are.

Personally, I hope it's not the whole Dragon Break thing, but that's for another discussion.

Perhaps we are all children in the 4th era... playing pretend... reenacting the Faction War in the Imperial City sometime in the 4th or 5th era. We decided what parts of the city were what parts of Tamriel. The reason we don't "die" is the same reason children at play don't die. Hermaeus Mora was watching us play, delighted by our whimsy, he cast a spell to make our land of make-believe 'real' to us. So, there are no children because we ARE children.

Really, I hope the fact that Hermaeus Mora knows means that we will be treated to an event whereby all the children of Tamriel return... perhaps they were all taken away and wiped from our memories.

We're still locked in Coldharbour and the entire escape with the Prophet was a psychological trick played by Molag Bal to break our will as prisoners.

Fairly certain it was just a play on words for the sake of the episode though -- "Only god knows why" with Hermaeus Mora substituted in due to his lore association with secret knowledge.

    Mudcrab pen.
There's a quest in Rivenspire that references an orphanage in Orsinium.

Can't find the post right now, but remember someone posting once that they figured there were no children in ESO due to the soulburst preventing new souls from being born, liked that theory a lot.

@Samadhi & @Beowulf_McCallum I actually hadn't considered that! That actually would make sense except for the fact that the full answer they gave was:

"So, for this one, we are a bit sworn to secrecy, but Hermaeus Mora knows."

That doesn't exactly sound like "God only knows" but it would make sense!

That's an interesting theory. How long before ESO did the Soulburst happen? It would have to be like... 20 years for all the babies to grow up to be adults, right?

I WAS going to say something about people would have mentioned that if that were the case but they really wouldn't have... it would just be a part of their life that they would assume others would just know about, so there would be no reason to discuss it.

The soulburst was only four years before the ESO timeline, according to any info I had found...

    2E 578 - soulburst
    2E 582 - events of ESO

Personally I still think the folk of Tamriel heard player characters were coming, and hid all their kids in secret basements... ;):smirk:

On a more serious note, the lack of children, both merely decorating some citishapes and for a few quests where the "parents & kid" setting looks very odd, since the "kid" looks more like "Younger brother/sister" instead... its often jagging when you play through the game and get reminded what's missing to make the whole place feel truly alive. I still hope that someday they will fix that...

If this is all a dream, it would really shut the mouths of all the people pissing and moaning about how this and that breaks lore. That'd be nice, a little silence. Some peace and quiet.

But then comes the smug assertions that ZoS wrecked the lore so badly they had to use the most hackneyed cliché in the book to get out of it. Let them ***, they've been doing it since the game was announced.

The people in Tamriel are still having children. Iirc, there's a dunmer couple in Davon's Watch whose baby died when the house collapsed on her during a covenant attack. Unless they just said "baby" to mean young, but it didn't really come across that way.

Heh you know I've heard a lot of people asking about this and my immediate reaction was 'because a lot of MMOs skip worrying about making child avatars or add them later' :P they just somehow aren't important in adultland. Also, wouldn't it be awful if they were a part of the justice system? I think that would upset A LOT of people and you know jerks would leave corpses everywhere.

Personally, think it would be awful even without the Justice System.
At launch, there were people in their underwear pretending to perform lewd acts on horses and other NPCs.
In the year ESO has been out, have seen a number of other questionable things as well.

Was able to pardon most activities beyond the horses since, at very least, it was adults interacting with adults. If there were child NPCs for these people to interact with, it would be quite distressing.
    Prefer having children absent entirely.

Why lag inside and outside Cyrodiil? Molag Bal knows.

Why no new content since november 2014? Boethiah knows.

Why P2W boosters? Clavicus Vile knows.

Why are main/important quests still bugged? Sheogorath knows.

    The lore explains it all.
