do we need jail?

am wondering if it would be fun and lore friendly to give the option of going to the jail.. once in jail we can perform various of duty to shorten the sentence.. say mining special ore(which have no use and no sale value).. or maybe even give the option of jail break.. just like traditional tes game with 1 lock pick hidden to pick a master lock to break away.

p.s. one the second thought maybe when you are killed by guard you get thrown in jail as well? and your friend can come and pay the bounty for you.. or break you all??

I don't think jail would work in an mmo. However, community service quest options might be interesting. This has been discussed elsewhere.

it could if jail was treated as a questing area.

Yeah, break out of jail to start a quest line. Turn the jail into a solo instance/delve that changes with each imprisonment, with each one increasing in difficulty not only for the locks but things you have to fight to get out. That would be pretty fun and would give people a reason to get caught....

Jails were more often in early mmorpg.
It was used to punish some bad people.

Most people only want jails is so they don't have to pay high bounty's and go to jail instead and then break out of jail and pay nothing.

I prefer the current system and just want the Enforcer side released so their are player guards and 'fix' players with high bounty's killing everything.

I'd be all for the jail if it took all of your gear and everything and you couldn't get it back. :) You could also add the instances and scale it based on time spent in jail making the difficulty get easier the longer you are in there. You would still need to pay the bounty too, or some version of the bounty. It would make you think long and hard before risking Jail time. ha-ha!

I like the idea of jails. As an additional option when you get caught by the guards...

It would have to be made as public dungeon kind of area, with two ways out - work off your bounty by doing -a lot- of boring repetetive "jail work" tasks like crushing rocks to gravel or sewing jute sacks or something of the sort, (and they should be something you'd have to do by hand, not something you can just let some bot do for you) or find a way to escape, which would add to your bounty instead.
Hmmm... or even have a friend come and pay your bounty to get you out...

In the jail you would of course have no access to your gear, and get a stylish black-and-white striped threadbare prison uniform instead (which would make a neat costume unlock you can get once you get out, one way or another), and recovering your stuff would have to be part of any jailbreak questline... (You'd get it back automatically on release if you decide to do your time and work off your bounty)

There also would be jail-clichee miniquests, from brawls in the recreation area to stabbing attempts in the dinin hall to soap dropping in the showers...:smirk:

And there might be several possible "escape" quests you could attempt, from the classic tunnel idea to climbing the wall in the night, each with their chance of failure (which of course still would add the escape penalty to your bounty, and thus your time in jail), possibly dependent on how well you execute your plan... I could see a questline with multiple options for each step, each adding to the success chance depending on what option you choose (choose one way to distract the guards and your success chance increases by 5%, choose another wy and it rises by 20%, choose one item for a task and it goes up by 10%, choose another and it only goes up by 5%, that sort of thing...), and some other ways to influence the final outcome (pick the lock on the first try and your chan ces go up 20%, need a second try and they go down 10%, finish that maze part in under a minute and they go up 10%, take too long and they go waaay down...)

And of course once we get a barbershop, jail achievements could unlock new exclusive "jail tatoo" body markings... I mentioned the costume already, there could be a title or two as well...

    So many possibilities!

It works perfectly in a mmo. ArcheAge has a good example of how it should be done. Although the player court sentenced be once to jail for 18 hours :(. so I was AFK in jail for an entire day. Escaping didn't help since you can't use attack skills when timer runs.

    But it works.

The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

Jail could work in that you don't lose all your stolen stuff if you are willing to go to jail and your bounty decays faster in jail.

So if you have that one purple item on you that happens to be stolen then doing jail time until your bounty decays would give you the choice of keeping it if caught.

That makes no sense at all. If you get caught, your stolen stuff gets confiscated, period. You'd think they let you smuggle anything into prison that easily? Just look at RL prisons... they check any prisoner -very- closely. Much more closely then you'd like... -insert rubber glove joke here-
Smart thieves don't rack up a bounty if they can help it, and dash to the outlaw refugee to sell/launder if they luck upon something purple.

The jail idea would have to be an entirely optional third choice between "pay fine or flee/fight"... and give people access to a bunch of repeatable "prisontime" miniquests that would drop expees on completion to work on that next c-point while also paying off your bounty... and of course add another piece of flavor to the game.

And naturally there is more that could be done with an "prison island"... not just the encounters, "do time" miniquests, and the "escape" questlines, but there could be a lot more... how about a hidden prison subbasement dungeons? (remember, still no gear...)

I like the idea of this opening to a quest area where one is thrown into a public dungeon setting. In this setting, they can either work of their bounty, or band together and form a mutiny of sorts where they have the chance to overpower their captives and escape through some dangerous tunnel, overflowing with all sorts of strange and creepy things which they must overcome to escape.

This adds a certain fun element to the game, the opportunity to build comradery with fellow escapees, and ultimately represents more re-playability for the game which I am always in favor of. Nothing spells a good time like skimpy prison outfits, pickaxes, and rusty, dirty chains and cuffs. Now... let's see you turn around and swing that pickaxe.... oh yeah, that's the stuff. Get angry now! Yeah that's it, show me your ferocious side... you will do anything to escape won't you? I like it.

Personally I would also like "put player character in stocks" for smaller offenses (for a short time, say, five to ten minutes... just enough so the player can take a little break).
With an option for other characters to throw food at them and call them names! ;) Though I suppose that could be troublesome if a high crime city runs out of stocks to put criminals into...

I would like to have jails ingame as part of the justice system with a little optional sidequest (as long as you have the proper skills) like breaking out of jail or bribe the guards to let you go or something. I suppose that would be fun ^^

There is just so much potential with the justice system. A lot of really fun ideas like this. I wouldn't mind slapping some criminals around a little while they hang out in chains, bound helplessly in stocks. Of course, I might just have to commit some crimes myself so I can hope to get the same treatment in return. Fair is fair, after all.
