Mounting horses on the right (wrong) side

Has anybody else noticed that our characters mount horses on the wrong side? We always mount on the right side of the horse. You are supposed to mount on the left side. (There may be special cases, but this is the rule for most of the time.)

But then, we play in a planet that has two moons, so Earth history and tradition may not apply.

It's a tiny cosmetic thing that shouldn't bug and grate at anyone, may even be lore-correct, and absolutely isn't worth their time to address, but...

Not entirely cosmetic. Cavalry in some cultures mount on the left to avoid getting tangled up in sidearms (swords, especially) that hang on the left hip. Easier to kick your right leg up and over.

Give it a try some time, devs. :p

I grew up on a horse farm, and was in the saddle pretty much every day from the ages of 8 to 18. Yet, I didn't notice this until just now. Heh.

Well... We carry all our swords on our back so the reason for left side mounting doesn't exist... Thanks for the lesson though!

by those arguements, its just as effective if everyone is taught to mount from the right instead...

either everyone right or everyone left, as long as its one side the primary, the horse can remember it.

tho the sword arguement does apply in ESO since one handed weapons are only held on the left side.
I play every class in every situation. I love them all.

Carring weps on the back is bad form and dangerous two handers are supposed to be carried at all times or in a cart before the siege, so realism is out of the picture sadly :( a greatblade or ***-sword is ment to be carried like a polearm, with the hild resting on top of your shoulder and the pommel in the grip of your hand, drawing from your back is next to impossible due to the fact you would have to have arms over 8 feet to fully free the blade from its sheath (GBs dont have a sheath for that reason)

Dual Wield and One Hand and Shield sheathe at the sides of the body.
However, that would make this mounting rule only applicable to one type of weapon user in the game.

Find it interesting that their main argument for continuing that specific side is "tradition."
Also find it interesting that apparently it is the opposite side in different parts of the world, also due to their own traditions.

The point about horses only learning things on one side of their brain is probably the most compelling piece of information they bring up though; with the prevalence of horse thieves in Tamriel (at least, when my characters play...), would probably strictly train my horse with the reverse side from the norm, so that if anyone tried to mount up and take off with my ride the horse would respond negatively rather than naturally.

I remember someone did in fact bring this up way back in beta. I remember it was an intresting topic of discussion, but I guess nothing came of it.

It is a preference of the rider mostly having to do with what hand they are and which side of the saddle their utilities may be on.

Not so much. A lot comes off this: not just the training of the horse, which side the buckles are on your saddle, etc, (you'd check the girth, then walk around the horse to mount?) but also affects wider things too.

It determines things like the orientation of mounting blocks (permanent things sets of stairs near stables for shorter people, the more infirm, or people in constrictive clothing to walk up so they didn't have to leap on or hike their leg up really far to reach the stirrup), and in societies which predominantly use horses rather than carts for travel, ultimately governs the side of the road we drive (the left!). If you mount from the left and ride off, then you are on the LHS of the road.

Eventually, the whole transport infrastructure, all the carts, harnesses, roadsigns, and so forth are all set up assuming that someone mounts their horse on the left.

This has always annoyed me too! There is one other game that I play in which I mount from the right, and it bugs me there too. I can't remember which game it is, but it's a constant nagging ... burr under my saddle, if you will.

I always thought that it had as much to do with the horse as it did with the rider's sword. I dug up the below explanation with the help of Google, so take it as you will, but it gels with what I recall being told as a youngster. They also told me never to approach or try to mount a horse from the right because it doesn't like it and might shy or even kick me.
"Mounting from the left may have become the rule because early horse trainers noted that horses demonstrated a preference for being approached and worked from that side, which is now backed up by modern research. Testing reveals that the horse's left eye responds quicker and more strongly to stimuli, and they like to keep humans in that line of sight. To reinforce this, the left side of the horse became known as the "near" side and the right as the "off" side."

It's actually as much or more for the horse to mount on the left side. That's how they are trained to brace for a person heaving themselves onto the horse's back. Mounting on the right side might produce...undesirable....results

It truly depends on how the horse was trained. Yes the default is typically one sided and left for most horses. The big exception are roping horses. They are trained to be mounted and dismounted from either side. This is where completive rodeo roping gain precious seconds for the flexibly to jump off and rope the calf.
