It is kind of in keeping with the lore though. Followers in other TES games are thick as mince too. Standing in your way, walking in front of your arrows and dying... Yelling at Lydia actually started to see like a necessary game mechanic in Skyrim a few times.

I want to clarify that the idea would not replace the current place for other players.
Just have extra possibility of having a follower for those moments where for x reason one can not join with others and thus count on a little extra support.
In the same way that occurs when a mission NPC follow us and supports us.
This is limited and will never replace the role of a player but sometimes is usually positive and even makes the experience of playing just a little more pleasant.
