As a previous post said, a bullet proof vest does not make it ok to shoot anyone.
Also, language can be harmful and upsetting to some, but not saying the words or saying them in a private chat channel isnt harming or infringing a persons liberty in any way. Swear, cuss, all you want, just do it privately and dont inflict it on the masses who most likely dont share that particular sense of humor and viewpoint. And no I dont see my reporting bad offensive language as inflicting MY viewpoint on anyone. The TOS are there for all to read and prove along with my OP comments being snipped, that ZOS doesnt find that language publicly acceptable either.
Then again, remove the profanity filter and /ignore function and hire 24 hour GM's to ban peole who offend other people until there are no people left to offend. Then the game closes, problem solved.
See, having the profanity filter and /ignore function sends the apparently erroneous message that offended players are expected to help themselves.
But being able to report people so they can be banned sends the message you seem to adhere to, ZOS is expected to get rid of any person you find "offensive".
So, either or. Either people are smart enough to use tools provided to keep the bad men at bay, or people require a schoolteacher with a ruler to chase away the scaries.
Guess what? Everyone offends someone. Enjoy the ban when it's your turn.
I dont want or expect anyone to be banned. I feel you are completely missing the point here.
Except that's what those reports do. Perhaps you are completely missing my point here.

no im not, ZOS chooses to ban or threaten ban as certian language etc is againt TOS. there is a TOS for a reason. we all need to get on in this digital world, that includes not willfully or knowingly spouting offensive speech. If ZOS didnt agree about bad language do you think they would ban? Do you think they would bother putting it in TOS? No they wouldnt. However you want to look at it, derogatory language, abusive language has no place in zone chat. Keep it to the private channels.

Then why do you need an /ignore function and profanity filter? Are they just there for you to look at and think "how very droll" while you hit report?
You'd make a great cop.
"You had the perpetrator subdued?"
"Yes sir!"
"You had him gagged to shut him up and a blanket placed over his head so he couldn't give you offensive looks?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Then why did you shoot him?"
"I could *feel* the perp offending me."

Had some guy in greenshade complaining about eso, though would not stop playing it because its the only mmo that he does not have a ma level in. He went on for about 2 hours last night and ended up being blocked by quite a few people. He would insult anyone who attempted to question him and just acted like a jerk over all.

Yes, this game is 'M' for Mature, not 'I' for Immature.
Honestly, there are times when Stonefalls chat is pleasant. It gets bad when there is an influx of new players, but luckily has times where it is not so horrifying. It seems to come and go in waves ...
(And the other zone chats usually get progressively better, barring the occasional troll here and there ...)
First off, there is no such thing as the "right to free speech" in regards to privately owned and operated establishments/activities. Being an American, I really find it laughable how many American public education twits don't understand the First Amendment does not apply to private places like: inside my home, inside a restaurant, in a bowling alley, or in a video game. It applies strictly to Congress being unable to make laws restricting your speech. A video game developer can restrict your speech as much as they want, they make the rules in their private playground ( and no, being open to the public for consumption does not constitute it no longer being private, before some nit tries that angle ).
With that out of the way, let me share why I left ESO within the first 30 days and didn't come back until f2P.
There were people making crass jokes in zone chat, I decided to join the fun. I made a joke basically involving a live baby being buried at the bottom of a barrel full of dead babies and having to eat its way out.
Disgusting? Of course. It was disgusting when I and the other 2nd graders used to tell what we termed the "grosser than gross" jokes. "What's grosser than gross? A barrel full of dead babies. What's grosser than that? A live one on the bottom? What's grosser than that? It has to eat its way out."
So some schmuck reported me. I got an email from ZOS declaring they would revoke my chat ability permanently ingame if they get another report. I emailed them back and politely told them where to stick their threat and immediately unsubbed. How nice of them to make the game free for me now, I'll consider the apology accepted.
You want to ban m ability to talk ingame because I'm running around yelling :"hang the n*****s" ( which i have not so put the button back where you found it ), be my guest. THAT is hate speech and should be banned. Bad jokes from 2nd grade are not.
Telling a sick joke or yelling "b**ch" over and over however is not. Those are things that are annoying or offensive to YOU but not necessarily offensive to everyone. And for the poor feminist who got her trip triggered, "b**tch" is not a term solely used for the female gender, has not been for a very, very long time.
Devs give you the profanity filter and ignore functions SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO HAVE SOMEONE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE ANSWERING STUPID "HE CALLED ME A ***!" "SHE MADE A SICK JOKE I FOUND OFFENSIVE!" REPORTS ALL DAY LONG.
Use the tools for what they are for: for you to ignore what YOU don't like.
Save the reporting for the times the situation merits it.

Funny how in your first paragraph you say its their game and have the right to control the speech in their game. Then you turn around and give 10 paragraphs on how your joke was fine in your mind and they should use their time on other forms of bad taste in chat. You can't have it both ways. With that I will say reread your first paragraph and maybe you will learn something from yourself. Thank.s

Giving people silly profanity filters and /ignore functions when the real intended punishment mechanic is for the "offending" player to be banned via butthurt report, is like giving cops a baton and mace when the real intended punishment mechanic for the offender is a bullet to the head.
A person see a profanity filter and an /ignore function, he/she/it thinks to themselves "Oh, cool. If I offend someone they'll just ignore me and move on."
The person on the the other side sees the report button and thinks to themselves "Oh, look. ZOS made me a moderator.".

Oh I agree with you, I just meant that expecting people to actually be mature just because the game is rated M is a wee bit optimistic. Sadly there are always a handful who just never grew up and learned what is and isn't appropriate social interaction. What else would I be talking about? It's regrettable that people often use a game's M rating to justify behavior befitting a hormonal teenager.

1 & 2 are there to protect the individual using those tools. 3 is there to protect the community. All 3 are needed for different reasons.
Based on those tools being available, the obvious procedure if you see someone being offensive and breaking the COC is to report them, and then put them on ignore. You've protected yourself by ignoring them, and you've protected the community by alerting ZOS to the offending behavior so that they can investigate and determine what action, if any, should be taken to correct it.
No reasonable person would ever think "oh cool, it's OK for me to break the rules that I agreed to, because the people who I offend and/or hurt while breaking those rules can just ignore me after I've already offended and/or hurt them."
You agreed to abide by the COC. Stop trying to justify breaking it.
If those things legitimately offend you, by all means report them. That's exactly what you're supposed to do if you feel somebody has said something offensive and broken the COC. Then it's up to ZOS to decide what action, if any, to take, based on whether they agree with your concern.People are given 3 tools to help deal with trolls and other idiots who break the Code of Conduct (and thereby break the TOS, as the TOS requires you to adhere to the COC).Yet again you miss the point. Very well. It just so happens I'm easily offended by words like "oh God" "Jesus Christ" and "religion". I'm gonna enjoy spamming that report button. You've inspired me to be a better person and report EVERYTHING that is offensive in any way to me.
ZOS gonna have to stick to the letter of the law when I start hitting ye olde report button for that one?

If those things offend you, by all means report them. That's exactly what you're supposed to do. Then it's up to ZOS to decide what action, if any, to take.People are given 3 tools to help deal with trolls and other idiots who break the Code of Conduct (and thereby break the TOS, as the TOS requires you to adhere to the COC).Yet again you miss the point. As you point out, ZOS says banning is the answer. So no need for the fluff appearance tools.Carafina34 wrote: »Carafina34 wrote: »Carafina34 wrote: »Carafina34 wrote: »@Zorvan Just beacuse a behaviour is prevelant doesnt mean it is right. And just because there is a filter doesnt mean it is ok.
Yet again you miss the point and I personally feel you are just trying to troll.

Remember, you only get to choose where the slope starts, not where it's gonna end.
OK, I know you're trolling, but here's the answer: it's up to ZOS to first decide if they agree that you've broken the rules. Read the COC: it's worded so that they get to decide if it's reasonable for the speech to be considered offensive. Second, if they decide that you have broken the rules, it's up to them to decide what to do about it. It could be a warning. It could be a ban. It could be something in between. If those things offend you, by all means report them. That's exactly what you're supposed to do. Wait, wait, wait. What do you mean "decide what action to take"? What's there to decide? Rules are rules right? That's what this whole damn conversation has been about, right? "THE RULES ARE CLEARLY STATED." So, what decision is there? One minute it's "rules are rules", the next minute it's "decide what action to take".

But you already knew all of that.
World of Warcraft and LEague of Legends. Two of the biggest successes. What do they have in common with each other? They both vie for the title of single-most toxic mmo chat.
Guess where both those games would be if they were busy running off every single person who offended some other person and got reported.

Feel free to go play those games then.

I agree, however it was the repeated use of the term ment to belittle a group of people if someone was saying N****R EVERY OTHER SENTANCE THAT WOULD GET JUMPED ON KINDA QUICK SO i DONT SEE WHY USING AN OFFENSIVE TERM TO DESCRIBE WOMEN IS OK. srry caps
Did you ignore them?
Yes I did after I attempted to reason for them. Zone chat should be a friendly welcoming place imo.
Umm, actually they did. Quoted from OPWhat's worse to me is no one decided to confront said person and just came strait to the 'Authorities' saying they should 'go to jail'...all the best problems in life are the one's solved by someone else though right?

Yes, telling people to go play other games when the one you're playing is having to change it's monetary system to survive. Always a smart move. One every single person who uses that tired out response seems to never think about.
