They really should change the "feature" where I accidentally left-click and hit an NPC then proceed to get mugged by everyone in the town ....

There's a settings in Game Play where you can turn off accidentally attacking the innocents. The problem with this, if you do so, and get caught stealing something and the NPS attacks you, you can't fight back or leave the building(if Inside) as the door won't open.

Settings/Gameplay turn Prevent attacking innocents on

I feel it should be on by default to protect the players moreso than the innocents

I'll try this thanks. I get caught killing people way to often.

ZOS made the mistake on not having the default being this function turned off.

I personally leave it on for the sake of risk / reward / being careful, etc., but I've seen too often that people have no clue that this can be turned off.

It can also be fixed by a real-world addon called Not Clicking Attack at Random.

I can maybe, maybe understand this happening once. I can't understand repeated "accidental" attacks.

Gonna second the suggestion that this option be turned ON by default. Messin' around on my mage, tried to flourish my staff and it zapped some poor dude.

Was lucky to make it away alive. I keep it switched off on all my other characters, but forgot to set it on my newest alt, which nearly got a couple people killed.

This either isn't entirely the truth, or my game bugged out. I was doing a quest in one of the Argonian villages, (something Mire, idr the name), and I was in one of the huts looting everything not firmly attached to the floor or one of the walls. I didn't realize there was anyone in there with me until I got the "You Are Now Disreputable" and got set upon by a rather irate lizard-lady. I couldn't leave the hut, but I was able to fight and kill her (which upset me a bit b/c I didn't wanna), despite having the "Prevent Attacking Innocents" option on.

I think it's like in Skyrim; if you get attacked first, you're able to engage that NPC w/o fear of any repercussions.

you CAN however turn on friendly healthbars. It will change all attackable / pickpocketable npcs in the cities to have a yellow bar over their heads. Ive found this helps to identify what direction not to shoot :P

IMO, that's one of the value-added changes to the system. Never cared for folks hot-dogging through the middle of the city.
