Maintenance for the week of April 6:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – April 6

So, apparently, ESO has "around one million current subscribers."

My thought is that since ZOS is not a publicly traded company, no one but ZOS knows how many subscribers they have, and they have zero reason to tell anyone else.

I wouldn't be surprised if they took this number from this very forum. Speculations based on totally unreliable numbers flying around here ranged from 700k to 1.3 mln.

Theres certainly alot more to the game than the naysayers would have people believe, alot of people who just get on with it and see no need to involve themselves outside of that. So I could easily believe the game has more interest than some might believe around here. The numbers will reflect that.

That said there are a good many problems from glitchy latency to the issues with cyrodiil. Thats continually having a noticeably negative effect in game / chat comments.

One million active seems like a bit of a stretch (granted not sure how NA is going these days) but really anything is possible with the turmoil 1.6 has set off.

Either way, that year is history. B2P will define what comes next numbers wise.

Depends on whether you buy into them having to drop the sub after Microsoft refused to budge on the fee.

The servers cant handle more than a room full of people anyway at this point, so question is more whether or not we even want those million players active or not lol.

Polygon states the same numbers, too. The numbers actually come from Superdata and stated that ESO had about 1.2 Million subscribers as of October. See this thread:

When will you people get it.
ZOS didn't drop the Sub Fee because ESO was doing bad. The lowest ESO subs were at around 500k, for the past few months we were well above 1mil. (To put it in another perspective, WoW is dropping out of the 2mil subs in the West)

Now I can't say for sure why they dropped it.
The most logical explanation is because Microsoft refused to drop the Xbox Live fee. Based on that it wouldn't make sense to keep Sub on PS4 and PC, while being B2P on XBOX 1 lol.

So there you go. Either Microsoft forced this on them, or ZOS just wants more money from us. It doesn't really matter as I'm sure ESO will have quality updates and healthy playerbase for at least next 10 years. (Can't see any other MMOs that have so much potential).

I would still like an explanation from ZOS. They should not have handled the change the way they did. It has put a huge dent in their credibility. Providing an explanation along with an apology would be a step in the right direction.

Unless ZoS says so the it isnt true :)

Cash shops are wildly successful. Look at the mobile gaming market. So its not about whether or not they needed to go B2P, its about whether or not they calculated they could make even more money off of a cash shop. Obviously they figured that they could. I don't like it, but then it isn't my business to run.

Consoles, B2P, cash shop and DLC seems an intelligent way to go financially rather than existing subs maybe staying in game for another year.

Why? I'm genuinely curious? Was it the new mounts? Gameplay hasn't changed at ALL because of Cash Shops. Was it you felt ESO wasn't worth your $15?

Hey some people consider 10,000 subscribers to be "around" a million hehe.

Course with the prudish style the armor designers are taking this game coupled with the destruction of a entire class (Sorc) and the FU they told the community I imagine it's going down.

IMO ESO will be fine for a while. There is no competition atm. By the time there is competition they will have had time to put together a lot of content(hopefully.)

For me it is that way. I stopped subbing after two months because of all the problems in the game. Been reading these forums at least several times a week since then, hoping to see enough improvement in the game to start subbing again.

Game is still not worth paying so much to play, so I will sub only when I want some crown points. That could change of course, if I see the game is worth a regular sub. But the way this company is, I fear that will not happen for a very long time.

You got some of that mixed up....Xbox is Microsoft and XBL, PS4 is Sony and PS+. Sony agreed to waive the PS+ fees for ESO subscribers, Microsoft never did. Personally I still believe that the console was originally delayed due to ZOS and Bethesda trying to come to an agreement with Microsoft; and that the second delay(the current one) was after talks feel through and ZOS and Bethesda made the decision to switch to the upcoming hybrid B2P model. This generation of consoles are so similar to PC in terms of architecture that there is no way it took them this much additional time to get the console version where they wanted it.

Everyone in my guild was pretty shocked when ZOS and Bethesda announced the conversion, at the time we were not considering the upcoming console release. I think the entire conversion was due to Microsoft's refusal to waive their XBL fees. ZOS and Bethesda aren't stupid, they know that their potential playerbase would be crippled on the Xbox platform if players were required to subscribe to both XBL and ESO. So here we are.

I love my Sorc, and ZOS stated during the beta phase that the Orc "boob window" was going to be removed, yet they had more important things to do and it got put on the backburner. People need to also keep in mind the redesign came about along with a massive improvement in texture quality for both Redguard and Orc armor(especially Orc medium armor!). ZOS decided to kill two birds with one stone. TES games have always been about function over form when it comes to armor design(for the most part), so this should have come as no surprise to anyone.

Subscription estimates based on sales estimates, of a privately held company. Not anywhere near reliable. Anecdotally, I’d say 1 million is way off, even at launch.

    Thanks @Brandalf for correcting me.

It makes even more sense now. Skyrim sold 60% of box copies on Xbox 360, that is a HUGE impact on their revenue. No wonder they were forced into a change.

Also I've been thinking, yes they owe us an apology and explanation about the change..But what if this is all true, and Microsoft forced it on them. They can't really go publicly flaming them. Not when there is so much money at stake.
