What happens when the game goes free to play...

Hi
I know what happens when the game goes buy to play for players who have an active account.
But my friend quit playing a while back and plans to start again when it goes BTP.
He still has the game installed and has kept it updated.
My question is can he just resume playing his existing account at that time?
Does he have to re-register or anything?
