Looking for a Templar Build:

I'm looking for a decent build for my Templar.
I'm an Argonian greatly focused on Heavy Armor (as well as crafting heavy armor).

A build that is focused on heavy armor (A crafted or bought set) is what i'm looking for.
Atm i'm only VR10, but i'm working towards VR14.

Crafting expertise:
- 3 parts Heavy armor 8 Traits
- Restoration staff 8 traits
- 1 piece heavy armor and shield have 7 traits (halfway towards trait 8).
- Rest of the heavy armor is 6 or 7 traits (and leveling).

Rest of the crafting skills are level 45-50 (Light and Medium armor have hardly any learned traits).
Anyone has some advice (or links) to decent builds?

What kind of a build are you looking for? To provide a suggestion we need more information on where you want to end up at. There are a lot of great craft able sets out there but depending on which is best for you depends on the build your trying to achieve. My main, a Templar, is geared towards main healing so I can go on dungeon runs. I'm running 5LA with 2 Heavy. Once I get the Undaunted line high enough I'm going to switch one of the Heavy for Medium. I'm using a 5 piece seducer with 5 pieces of Healers Habit. I put 50 into Health and 12 into Magicka with all + Magicka enchants. Currently I've got 73 CP's that's spread out for better healing/Spell Crit.

Up till now i have mainly focused on Healing and crafting, and even though i worked as a healer i always walked around in 7/7 heavy armor for the added defence and healing received bonus. Most of my equipment is based around making sure that any heals i do have a huge impact on myself.
- 5 pieces of Twilights Embrace (+10% healing Received).
- 3 pieces of Shalidors curse (+4% healing Received).
- 3 pieces (jewelry) of Unassailable (+4% healing received).

I don't really have a goal or aim, but if i want achieve something i need to be able to fight.
Currently even my resource gathering trips end up in failure because i can't engage in combat. As a healer i don't have any problems with my resources or staying alive, but in VR+ Content (Craglorn) i can't enter combat without draining my Resources within a few seconds. 1v1 targets aren't a problem, but since higher level enemies come in groups more often then not i'm out of resources within a few seconds.

A few builds i have used in the past:

7/7 heavy armor, Dual wielding + restro staff (1.5)
Pure Magicka build for high healing numbers.
Opening with Quick Siphon + Rapid Regeneration, followed by Bloodcraze Spam against the target who had the Siphon on him/ her. Ones the target died i switched weapons and recasted Quick Siphon on a new target, after which i continued with Bloodcraze spam.
Worked great, but at higher levels the enemies started hitting so hard (and with so many) that the healing i got from it was no longer enough.

7/7 heavy armor, SnB and Restoration staff. (1.5)
Not to sure about the stats anymore.
Basically used Power Bash against all enemies who i didn't want to fight, after which i used normal melee to kill off the one i didn't stun. When the others stood up i used Power Bash again, putting them out of combat for another 10-15 seconds until they were ready to be killed.
Not a fast combat build, through pretty save.

7/7 Heavy armor +2X Restor Staff (1.5 and 1.6 PTS)
100% Focused on health (All crafted armor and made so i would have the highest amount of health possible. Same for jewels)
It was a combo of using Blazing shield, Channeled focus and Restoration staff heavy attacks. Very easy to keep up the shield and letting enemies kill themselves.
Doesn't work in group combat since i need enemies to attack me.

7/7 heavy armor. 2X 2h sword (1.6 PTS test build)
33% Health, 33% Magicka and 33% stamina. All armor crafted for achieving the highest possible regen values.
Bar 1 had Puncturing sweep and Cleave Shield Morph, Restoring Aura, Evil Hunter and Radiant Magelight.
Bar 2 had Executioner and Radiant Destruction (with the rest the same).
Although a solid build, since i used 2 resource pools each with skills that used about the same amount of resources, it didn't pack much of a punch and against strong i would often die.

I have tried a lot of ways, yet have never found one that is both good in group combat as well as solo combat.

I got 49 champion points.

I'm always tweaking things and pushing it further, but this is what I have right now:

5 piece Armor of the Seducer
4 piece Alessia's Bulwark
3 piece Grace of the Ancients (full set when I'm using the resto staff)

Armor is 5/2, heavy/light, though I'm considering moving to medium instead of light. I keep light armor versions of 3 heavy to swap out when I'm running as heals, resulting in 5/2, light/heavy. The set remains the same, but I'm considering swapping out Alessia's for something Magnus' Gift or Eyes of Mara. More magicka/recovery.

I have over 70 CPs total, and several are used to reduce block cost, reduce magicka cost, and boost magicka recovery. The resulting stats with food running are:

Health - 28k
Magicka - 18k (20k as healer)
Stamina - 14k
Armor/SR - 21k (26k with Channeled Focus)

I'm considering swapping Seducer's for Hist Bark, but can't justify the loss of magicka recovery yet.

My build was basically designed around doing Craglorn solo, since I could never find people to group with. I did most of Lower Craglorn delves solo, and the last 2 with a single other group member (my brother). He would DPS and I would tank and heal. Trash mobs are basically a joke. Spellscar is only worth doing if I've pulled at least 3 groups, and none of those weak zombie mobs. As many atronachs as I can find, preferably Storm. I've used to use Magical Anomalies as a metric for my ability to solo, but now they're too easy as well. Skyreach Catacombs is a pretty good alternate to Spellscar. You get many more enemies per area, but truth be told, it's easy too. The best tests I've found are Upper Craglorn world bosses. They hit pretty hard, and can have lots of adds, but it's just out in the world so you don't have to get a long quest and go through a dungeon. Plus, they're fun

This same setup also works for being in a group. Usually, you need a tank or a healer, and I can play both. Like I said, though, it's always a work in progress. Hope that helps some!

Why would you use a traditional tanking armor set bonus (Hist Bark)?

My VR9 Templar solos dolmens 1-2 levels higher than him.
all attribute points into health
CPs into things that reduce the cost of Magicka and enhance Cloth Armor
I wear 5/1/1 (cloth/leather/plate); 5 Seducer and 3/4 Magnus

I am making my way around and doing all the dolmens that I missed earlier...solo.
Even with cloth, if you use Blazing Shield and the jabby-jabby spell (self heals), your health shouldn't drop.

I've seen a youtube video of a post 1.6 Stam Templar with leather and he was able to solo anomalies.

Templars are amazing.

Not to nock on Templars, but any one running 2h with brawler can solo an anomaly (tested on my v14 NB). That being said, if you want dps, 2hand is pretty good right now. For crag, spamming brawler with a few heals and a damage shield should run you through most generic enemies pretty easy.

For a heavy armor templar I like this build:

- Stats/armor enchants focus on health and stamina.
- Jewels are enchanted with feat cost reduction.
- Sword and shield: Ransack/Biting Jabs/Shielded Assault/Radiant Aura/Channeled Focus/Empowering Sweep (ultimate)
- Second weaponset you can use anything you like.

Let's be honest here, anyone who has run a Templar will tell you....puncturing strikes, puncturing strikes, blazing shield (If a big boss type) and BOL....done (and you can do that almost naked if you choose to). For PVE leveling, you need nothing else. Period. Everything else is just cake. I went from lvl 36 to VR14 primarily with those skills. I use repentance when grinding in Crag instead of BOL. But that is all you need. I have fully maxed the 1H/SH line, and almost done with the 2H. Also Restro staff and all the class skills. But those skills are for specializing...2H, PVP, Restro, healing. But you asked for just what you need to level. Use the other 7 skill slots to level as many skills as you want, but you really only need the 3 I mentioned.

Sets for armor -

Twilight is good for the spell crit, but you only need 2 or 3 pieces for that.
Seducer is good (My 5 piece set bonus, but I usually heal)
Hist Bark is good if you want tankish

Those are the good crafted I have used. Willow's Path is good too, but requires 6 traits researched. A more clear direction you want to go would make it easier. I play a Temp, almost exclusively, and they are very versatile. And they can be skilled to specific needs quite easily. There are great setups for Tank/Heal/and now DPS. But if you are just leveling solo, and that is the goal........read above about the only 3 skills you need.

EDIT: Also, with 1.6, you need to decide if you are going with Magicka or Stam build. That will greatly impact what sets you use. I play magicka, hence the sets. My Magicka is 23K and my health is 20K ish. With Temps, and the new Champ Points, (This is for the OP) you do not need to worry about your incoming heals. There are so many Temp skills that do this, repeatedly, you should be worrying about damage, or spell crit/weapon crit. About the only thing a Templar doesn't need, is to worry about their incoming healing. Just my opinion.

Umm, personally I have not read them, but I did get the morph that also returns 20% or 40% of the damage done with that skill now. Jesus Beam is now right at the top for replacing puncturing strikes, but I prefer the multiple targets you get from puncturing strikes. This allows for more targets, hence greater health returns. Still playing with some of the Dawn's Wrath skills that were changed. Personally, I stick to what I said for leveling. Currently, I am still running around the PVE environment, 7 light, having no trouble killing anything I encounter. Using puncturing strikes, silver bolts, repentance.....grinding out XP for 2H skill lines.

And actually to not sound so ignorant.....I shall go read them now.

EDIT: Felt it was needed again.....PVE leveling only. For anything else, the skills are drastically different

Since you are not a templar you do not know how that skill really works. With all the complaining people did about it i tried it out myself... and boy what was i disappointed. It is good... sure... but only when you're in the last 25% of the fight, which makes it 75% useless.... not something that will help me very much.
As @Morshire mentioned, Punctering Sweep is a much better morph since you can use it to fight multiple targets, unlike Jesus Beam.

First off... thanks everyone for the suggestions so far, it has really helped me move forwards with my build.
I decided to try out a magicka based build, while using one handed and shield.

The skills i use are:
- Puncturing Sweep
- Honor the Dead
- Restoring Focus
- Restoring Aura
- Inner Light.
Ultimate - Crescent Sweep.
(For the Ultimate i also have Bat Swarm, since i am a Vampire)

Armor became 7/7 heavy, with 4 pieces Seducer and 5 pieces Willows Path.
All my Armor is Enchanted with health, while all my Attribute points are in Magicka.
This got me to 17K Heal, 17K Magicka and 8K Stamina.

With the use of some simple food i and (Gold) Magicka regen enchantments on my jewelry boosted my regenerations a to the following numbers:
- 1854 magicka regeneration
- 419 health regeneration
- 706 stamina regeneration
.
On my second bar i switched Honor the dead and Restoring Aura for Purifying Light and Shield Charge.
I'm thinking about switching Shield Charge for Focused Charge, as the have the same range and stun, but from what i know i can damage multiple targets with Focused Charge.

I have tried this build in the Ruins of Kardala Group Delf In Craglorn, against the normal enemies and the First boss you encounter if you walk to the left (33K HP boss). Nowhere in this fight i had any problems with sustaining my magicka or health (although i almost died ones because of a Charged arrow by one of the archers).

Purifying light seems to work very well against bosses, although shield charge becomes useless ones you enter a longer fight.
Maybe someone has a suggestion for that?

Well, if your goal is to stand alone, then you are pretty well off. BUT, if you are grouping, then I would rethink some of that. Personally, Purifying ritual removes 5 negative effects on you....efficient purge only does two, but to all...and I mean all allies in the radius. I have been in PVP and had it affect 30+ people. So maybe think about what the goal is with the purify.

Also, Nova morphed to solar prism is a better ULTI. Or if you like crescent...empowering is better for the shield. Nova will get you 40% less damage though. So again, what is it you want to do? And allies get the gravity crush synergy.

Restoring Aura morphed to repentance is good, but you really need a high body count to make it worthwhile for most things. The regen is good, but I mainly use it when grinding, or in some dungeons. As a healer (meaning I need less stam), I use Luminous shards for the tank. So if your healer is good, you could look at something else in that slot.

If you are using 1H/SH - Low slash morphed to deep slash will get you another 15% damage reduction. Personally, reduced damage for all over self heals to me is better. And defensive stance will help against arrows, although not that great. Or the other morph to absorb spells and heal self. I mean, if you are going to use the skill line, maybe mix in some of those skills too.

Inner Light is good, but I only use it for group healing. I swap bars a lot, and having to have it on both or risk having to recast isn't worth it.

And yes, focused charge morphed to explosive charge will do AOE damage.

And honestly, don't be impressed with the big numbers on your stats. My Magicka regen is 1080. But I rarely run out unless I am spamming BOL. Choose those CP wisely. Spell cost reduction makes a huge difference, and will free up attribute points.

Like others have said.....20K health seems to be the minimum now for end game stuff. I run about 21K Health and 23K Magicka. My glyphs are max magicka and spell cost stuff.

Most of the time i'm standing alone, and the times i'm with a group it won't be those Trail focused like groups.
I'm not much of a PvP person as i never survived for a long time in combat. Maybe with this build i stand a chance.

Solar prison doesn't give damage reduction for me. It says damage reduction is 0%.

As for SnB skills, the idea of further reducing damage seems good.
Solar (if it isn't bugged or something) together with Low Slash will lower the incoming damage quite a bit.
Crescent Sweep and Slow Slash would also be a good combo (for the same reason)
Ill surely put Low Slash on my second bar.
(also... doesn't Defensive stance only work against spells?)

I only picked Inner Light for the 10% extra crit rate, which should work for Puncturing Sweep. Idk if that 10% is worth much, else i could drop it for something better.

I haven't really touched my CP yet, as i'm trying to see how this build works and what it would need.

I'm not to worried about my HP yet. I'm VR10 and not really busy with endgame stuff. Ill keep the 20K HP mark in mind for when that time comes though.

Solar has to be bugged....I use it all the time, and it is pretty much the preference from all the Temps I talk to. Grouping doesn't have to be Trial based. I have only run one. Groups dungeons for the Undaunted skills. Or dungeons for the achievements.

So the 10% crit is for spells. I am not sure if that applies to puncturing strikes, never checked. I only use it when I am throwing heals.

At work, but here is what Nova says:

-Nova

◾Cast Time: Instant
◾Range: 28m
◾Cost: 300 Ultimate
◾ For 8 seconds... ◦Enemies deal 40% less damage.
◦Enemies take 9 magic damage per second.
◦Allies may activate Super Nova synergy, dealing damage and stunning all enemies in the area.

◾ Morphs ◦Solar Prism: Allies may activate a more powerful synergy - Gravity Crush.
◦Solar Disturbance: Snares enemies standing in the area by 50%.

And defensive stance says projectiles for one, and spells for the other on morphs. But you might be right. It has been a bit since I tanked with my Temp. I remember it for PVP, it really screws with mages (well did) but it works wonders against NPC spell casters.

I would run Puncturing Strikes/Ransack/Deep Slash/Inner Beast/Blazing Shield and Nova when I tanked. I run BOL/Healing Springs/Combat Prayer/Efficient Purge/Inner Light and Nova for healing. (Just throwing main bars here) DPS, well I am still playing around. 2H (Brawler/Uppercut/Reverse Slash) and some Dawn's Wrath (Still not sold on the whole "Jesus Beam" except to finish) skills are working well. Like I said, I have maxed out quit a few lines, and am constantly trying new ones based on what I read or hear. But for solo play, puncturing strikes/silver bolts/BOL or Repentance are all I use. I just keep stacking skills to level for the next big update. And I am still running around in all LA. I do have HA/MA maxed as well. I don't really use MA at all, but it will give the passives in Undaunted line eventually.

Yeah, I got the 70CP at launch, and earned another 5 I think since then. It makes a difference...because of the changes, but I am not a CP hound. I want a few of the skills maxed, but the rest they can keep.

I've actually been using Meteor (Ice Comet morph) instead of Nova, mostly because it costs a good 50 ultimate less, the enemies are snared by more (85%), and the damage dealt is at least, if not more than, what Nova does. As a tank, it's really easy to generate ultimate now, just throw in a quick light attack every 8 seconds. Plus, there is some satisfaction in seeing a swarm of enemies fly into the air as the comet hits ground

My bars look like this:

Bar 1: Tank

Pierce Armor (for the extra spell resistance debuff)
Structured Entropy (a low cost, HoT, and boosts max health by 8%)
Blazing Shield
Channeled Focus (grants armor/SR, returns 4k+ magicka over time, costs ~450 magic)
Repentance (Radiant doesn't work as well, Repentance is free, and you still get passive 10% health/stam/magic regen)

Ultimate - Empowering Sweep (15% damage reduction, 4% extra for each enemy hit...absolutely essential)

Bar 2: Heals

Inner Rage (magicka morph, since I'm magicka based, help take pressure off my group)
Extended Ritual
Radiant Glory (went with the heal morph)
Healing Springs
Breath of Life

Ultimate - Ice Comet/Nova/Remembrance (depends on the situation)

Tanking tactics are pretty simple. Blazing Shield -> taunt boss -> Structured Entropy -> Channeled Focus. I keep a look out for adds, light/heavy attacking the boss now and then. Empowering Sweep is usually ready pretty quickly, so if there aren't really any adds, or DPS is doing well, I'll just use it on the boss. Otherwise, I put up a fresh Blazing Shield, then Inner Rage adds that are pestering my group. Once they get to me, everyone eats Empowering Sweep. Once adds die, which they will since Sweep continues to pulse for damage even after the initial hit, use Repentance and get back health/stamina. Obviously, continue to keep enemies taunted, and keep Entropy on anything you can. Rinse and repeat.

It's amazing how much damage you can take with Blazing Shield up, Empowering Sweep active, and Channeled Focus buffing armor. If ever I need health and my healer can't get to me, I put up a fresh Shield, swap bars and use BoL, and maybe throw down an Extended Ritual. If the fight is rather easy, I want it to end quickly, so again I make sure Shield is up, swap bars and invoke Ice Comet. Once the boss is in execute range, Shield is up, and I fire Radiant Glory.

Exceptions:

Healer
If I'm running as healer for the group, Bar 2 changes drastically. Inner Rage goes away, Radiant Glory goes to slot one (even healers should do damage), Force Siphon goes to slot 3. Ultimate either stays as Ice Comet/Nova or I might switch to Remembrance for the really tough bosses. You can even technically use it when tanking, since you're basically immortal during the channel.

DPS
If a large part of a delve/dungeon requires DPS, Bar 2 changes to accommodate that. Radiant Glory goes to slot one, Puncturing Sweep is on slot 3, Blazing Spear is on slot 4. My spell/weapon damage is pretty low compared to true DPS builds, but with these changes, we're a 3 DPS/1 Heals group, so enemies tend to die rather quickly. I'll also continue to throw down Extended Ritual and BoL so the healer has less work. Lastly, once I see enemies in execute range, they melt with Radiant Glory.

Tank
Only change I make to Bar 2 for tanking is adding damage via Purifying Light (Backlash morph), and I do this usually when I'm soloing. It's so quick now, I might even cast it on 2-3 enemies, Blazing Shield up, purposefully fail to block so Shield soaks damage and explodes, which just adds to the damage of Backlash

The reason why I love Templars, is the above. I can quite literally do every role in the game, and in 1.6, I can do them well. There's so much healing happening, especially in a group with a separate healer, that health just doesn't go down. As has been mentioned, weapon choice is important. A 2H stamina build, regardless of class, will tear through enemies like paper, a bow based Templar can further the range with Reflective Light and Dark Flare, etc.

Champion Points:

These are important to use, I believe. The percentages you see are small, but I've certainly felt the boosts to recovery, armor, block cost, etc. I got the 70 CPs as well, and have gotten some 5-6 since. Admittedly, I did grind the first couple, and then decided to try Craglorn questing and levelling my DK alt for the rest. Needless to say, questing, to me, is a much less boring way to get CPs. I like grinding, mind you, but it can get monotonous.

Anyway, that was really long, but it's almost everything I can say about Templars. I created mine something like 10 months ago, after a failed attempt at being a Sorc, and I've never looked back.

Don't forget, Focused Charge still has that annoying global cooldown. They've reduced it, as per the patch notes, but I maintain that if you are furiously fighting and trying to fire skills off quickly, you will feel it. Or at least, I certainly did on PTS.

Well there ya go...that was some good stuff and even I learned something. Quick point on the CP.....it looks small, but it makes a huge impact. For example....just 50 CP in the MAGE under the Apprentice Tree.......7K added to my magicka. Take a look at this thread and go use the calculator before spending, I did.

Flawless Dawnbreaker

Inside your Restoring Focus you can spam all skills on Bar 1. Fight inside the area of your caltrops. When you get a knockdown from Defensive Stance cast Blazing Shield, Rally and Critical Rush in. Hit them with Wrecking Blow or Jabs a couple times and finish with Executioner. Keep an eye on your buffs from Bar 1 and re-apply. Enemy players will be attracted to you as you will be healing others at the same time as yourself, this is good as you can tank up to 7 people whilst still doing a lot of damage to them individually with burst and DoT to all enemies. Your group can finish them off, you can keep being the target.
