So what actually builds ultimate now?

Pre 1.6 it seemed like all i had to do to build my ultimate was use my abilities and attack and kill enemies with weapon attacks. Nowadays, though, it seems that no matter how many mobs i kill my ultimate never increases. what gives?

From the 1.6 patch notes

Adjusted how Ultimate generation is gained to make it more even across different classes and builds:
When you damage an enemy with a light or heavy attack, you will receive a buff that grants three Ultimate per second for eight seconds.
This buff is refreshed with each light or heavy attack.
If you heal an ally that has the Ultimate gain buff, you will also receive the Ultimate gain buff for eight seconds.
This only works if the ally being healed was not at full health prior to the heal.
Abilities that previously gave Ultimate will now provide the Minor Heroism buff that will give you additional Ultimate over time.
Ultimate can also be gained from blocking, dodging, or attacking targets with a damage shield.

So your getting No Ultimate? Or just very slowly now? Also what level are the mobs compared to you?

its now a buff you get if you

you smack something with a light or heavy.

or block an attack,

or restore the hp of someone who has the buff.

it can be buggy tho so report it if you cant get the (unlisted) buff.

I can go from 0 to ULTIMATE READY by spamming it on a single foe.
I had no idea but this forum pointed me in the right (new) direction.
Not afraid to 'save it up' now.

PS: I have the Fast Attack trait on my weapons, so I can do more attacks faster.

On my VR5 magicka NB, my ulti is almost always up -- lots of dots, hots, light attacks, and blocks. I don't really pay much attention to it, but it seems like its up now more than before.

Light and Heavy attacks during combat will gain you Ultimate. Certain techniques will also let you gain Ultimate, and certain passives will increase the amount you gain when you gain.

It's kinda sad when players have to ask what to gain ultimate on. When they never was designed for anything else then be gained in combat?

Go hit something! And be grouped with a DK!

@Cogo it's changed since the patch. Crits use to generate Ultimate for me. Nothing wrong with asking the community for info.

Everyone has to attack weave/animation cancel now. It's no longer just something the cool kids did to boost their dps, it's actually part of the game now.

Light / Heavy attack will build ultimate for 8 seconds.
Healing someone (they have to be below full health or you're not actually healing them. while they are building Ult (see above) grants you the same 8 second Ult build.
Various set procs/bonuses/passives add to Ult (Invigorating Drain for Vamp, for instance)
FG line has a passive that builds Ult with death of Daedric/Undead

Short List:

Left click once every 8 seconds on an enemy or keep up HoT's on your group while they do the same.

Pro tips:

If you're short on Ult going into a fight, attacking anything will trigger the counter: Bugs, Deer, Rodents.
If you continue to be short on Ult and there are trash mobs, slow your DPS a little to retrigger the timer.
