JS Meter Question

What does the red vs white color mean on the JS meter? The more fine one gets, more red that one sees, but what does white mean? I can not find any ingame help file to explain the meter in more detail or a pop up that talks about it. I do understand if one does X crime will equal to Y coin fine based on level and crime done. I just wondering what the colors mean and does it also have meaning where it is on the meter graph -- 1st bar vs 4th bar.

Not 100% certain on this, but think that the red portion is bounty and the white portion dictates whether guards will attack on sight or stop and ask for bounty first.

White is total bounty.

Red is "heat", which just adds to you overall meter but is unrelated to your bounty. It degrades quickly.

If your total meter gets too high, from any combination of red and/or white, you can become "kill on sight" where the guards won't even ask you if you want to pay your fine or not.

I believe every section of the bounty circle meter (disreputable, notorious etc.) the guards can detect you easier, until you become KOS.

edit: I think also, the more you meter is filled, npcs act differently towards you, and you may not even be able to talk to them.
