Zone chat, must we bear this? Platers, chat is for chatting.

It is similar in many games, chat, wwhether zone, local, general or some other channel.. They are only used for mere LF, guild advertising and selling/buying stuff.

I know that ESO has no LF or Trade channel, shame on ZOS.. I also know that many people just ignore such channels, special shame on them. I have even seen normal chat, talking about stuff being regarded as spam, this is the most troubling thing of all.

Why have we abandoned chatting? There is no smalltalk, no things discussed about what happens and where, no people asking help and if someone asks, they are often ignored. Why cant we just go back to good old days when general chats were for talking about stuff that was dear in way or another to players, why dont we whine when there is something to whine and discuss about it?

It is extremely boring to have chats filled with LF, guild advertisements and such when it could be nice place to get to know eachother.

No, guilds are not the same thing at all.

I just set up a tab with no zone on it and chat with my Guild mates. I would much rather chat with strangers I am affiliated with than strangers I am sharing a server space with. Have to keep those degrees of separation down.

Silver and Gold zones were literally dead quiet for me with the exceptions of a single guild message every X days. Was amazing.

Now in Crag there are a ton of chat activity, but thankfully I mainly see group requests.

No, guilds are not the same thing. Guilds are better for the purpose of socializing. Almost 100% of my social conversations are in guild chat. I can talk to them no matter what zone they are in.

I have had Zone chat turned off on all my characters since some time in April 2014. I have a special tab I use to show me Zone when I am in Cyrodiil, since that Zone chat has a purpose. Outside of Cyrodiil, it is off.

Yep. This has been me too. I have a tab for it for when I want to look out for PuGs or when in Cyrodill (what little I have been there) but that's it. When I ask a question in chat, most of the time I get an answer via private message. Probably 80% of the time at least. Also, with the ability to belong to five guilds, people may well be chatting in guild chat. I see that all the time.

Seriously how many Threads does it take for people to realize that NOTHING can be done about chat being used for adverts. It doesn't matter if ZoS creates a Trade Chat, and a LFG Chat, and a Guild Recruitment Chat, Players will spam w/e they want in ANY CHAT THEY WANT TO. ZoS or any other game company cannot stop this. If more people are looking at Zone chat, then more people will spam Zone chat with their sales. If Players stop responding to adverts in Zone chat, those people will use the next chat, etc. It's the same thing about people talking politics/religion and all other useless crap, ZoS can't stop this by adding chat channels.

You said yourself, there is no sub chats for the things you say you don't want to see in zone. So, what are your proposing? People stop asking for groups and trade requests with no other tab to take it to? I'm not trying to be nasty here, please don't take it that way. I'm genuinely curious what you're asking for.

Holy crap, you just answered a question that I had this morning about communication in Cyrodill. Wonder if I can invite a member of an opposing faction that I meet in Cyrodiil to a guild, purely for the purpose of being able to communicate with them?
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...

Lower level areas probably have more of the chat I think you want. Craglorn chat as of 1.6 has been especially refreshing, with people wanting to group for quests and stuff.

It's 99.99% a solo game; what do you need chat for?

Seriously, whenever I've asked for help on a quest or for a boss mob, someone has always shown up. They might not have answered in chat, but they always saw my request and responded physically. There's always a nice "Thank you" and "np" at the end.

Whenever there is an actual conversation -- like in a delve -- it's done with a whisper.

Chat itself -- in every game, going back to EQ and UO -- has never really been about chatting. It's been requests for grouping, offers to sell stuff at ridiculous prices, "you noob" slander back-and-forth, "Barrens chat", and so forth... but never "chat" per se. If you want to chat with someone, you whisper.

Consider the number of different age groups in a game like ESO; I'm a dinosaur; what have I got in common with some teenybopper to chat about?

"Hey, have you ever listened to the Shangi-Las?"
    "The who?"
"No, the Who were a different group..."

I'm an overeducated cowboy from the American Southwest; what am I going to talk about culturally to some dang Yankee from New England?

"Ya'll e'er been in the desert 'round real mountains?"
"You can't get thar from here..."

Expecting common perspectives leading to real conversations (chat) in games like ESO is a bit unrealistic. Groups of friends playing the game together will chat; guilds will chat; but everyday people won't chat. Cyrodil is a perfect example; you'd think that players on the same side would coordinate and cooperate. Nope. Guilds talk to each other; they never even tell other players where the fights are going on...

It's human nature, good, bad, ugly, or otherwise... and games bring out the worst in human nature.

I have all chats disabled, I find it silly to have one on a Megaserver. We don't have a server community here and most stuff I read in the past was RP chatter and it got a bit on my nerves to be honest. Not because of the RP, but because of the fact that I never knew these people which were talking.

Its like in the train, two people talk and the whole railroad car must listen to it, so annoying!

I do that when answering a random question. Usually because the responses people are giving would get you banned if you said it on forum and I'm trying not to get sucked into that. Mostly, I avoid zone chat though bc opposite the OP...I would rather see the sale/guild spam than a lot of the conversations I have had the misfortune of witnessing.

I have the ordinary zone chat disabled, on the EU megaserver it's often filled with a multiplicity of languages, along with trading, and I have the English Zone chat enabled instead. It rarely gets any chat in it but occasionally questions and answers are given there. I'm happy, however, for the minimalist UI to be chat-free. Like Lord_Kreegan I'm an old player and don't play in order to socialise with players a third or less of my age - no disrespect to them. What would we chat about exactly?

About a month ago, I finally went through and erased my ignore list and decided I'd "reset" my game socializing as it were. My ignore list was so long from when the game first came out and you had to ignore 5 spammers every hour or so. It's funny that with the 1.6 release and the increase in population on the servers, I've had to put at least 15 new people on my ignore list because they're either spamming, or just being vulgar and immature. I finally just turned off zone chat.

I usually chat in guild :) I know the players and they know me. You can have actual discussions that way.

Zone is always very hit and miss. Mostly miss. Best to avoid it and gather those you enjoy playing with and talking to into a guild.

It makes the odds of an interesting and polite discussion much higher.

To be honest zone chat in Glenumbra this weekend was an utter cesspit. Worst I have seen it since launch. Just filled with 13 year old lads name calling and having filth filled arguments at about the intellectual level of a Nord in a brewery.

I'd sort of expect it in Glenumbra though as it is a lower level area but this really was the worst I have seen it and I've been around since beta.

I agree 100 percent. what really scares me that if its this bad now just wait until the console release hits. luckily consoles will be on their own server. I fear The B2P move has opened the door to the lower tiers of human intellect. and the community. as a whole will suffer for it.

So why are people so stupid these days? I mean iy is like people do not even understand the basic concept of talking various things with people while idling in the cityt for example. Maybe it is fact that people with enough intellect ahev just vanished from the game.

Matter being ridiculed proves the lack of intellect even more. Why it is bad for the game to talk in chat? Why is it that 5 years ago we used to talk in chats (Obviously not most of you), find people with similar interests, make friends, sometimes even real life friends who live near you. We used to form guilds for groups of people that have similar interests, there was not plethora of guilds like these days.

Now, chat is used for advertising, guilds are no longer form to play with friends, guilds are formed, then people just ivite random people to them with no common interests, most people in guilds never say anything.. Concepts that worked once, have been twisted to something else that does not help community get good like the old way did.. Guilds are like facebook, you get plethira of people in, just for sake of numbers.

Also, ZOSD can do quite a bit to have chat as just chat, first they could implement missing channels, then they could give some moderation tools for people to report people spamming stuff in wrong chat, they could even use a bit more money and hire some more moderators to do just that. Still, the most can be done in player side, we need to stop being idiots who dont care abpout other channels like LFG and start using them if they exist. I find it most curious that people really think it is ok to spam chat with trade or adverts when there are channels for them. People need to bve more considerate about stuff like that.

In BETA and after launch, chat was active and people acrtually talked about stuff, it has been in decline ever since. Last day wwhen i was at Daggerfall for half anb hour, i did not see anyone saying anything but those LFG or adverts. I too fear, that after B2P lauches, the Unlimited will make things even worse.

If you are now going to ridicule the matter a boit more, you dont have anything to say so stop typing and go to some other thread.
