Question about Windows 7 and Aero

Hello, all. I am by no means a "tech-savvy" person, at least not anymore.

I understand that in general, it's best to set games to full-screen mode so that they can have full access to a computer's resources.

However, someone told me that if I keep Aero enabled and set the game to run in windowed mode, that allows the game to use some RAM that would ordinarily be reserved for Windows.

Is this true? I've experimented a bit, and it really does seem like the game runs more smoothly in windowed mode.

Not sure. I've let my video card "Optimize" my graphical game settings and it changed to full screen model.

Ever since then I keep getting windows pop up complaining about my "Aero Performance" and do I want to change.

I'm almost to the point of bouncing BACK to Full Screen / Windowed since I had a LOT LESS problems.

Unless you're talking Windows 98 and earlier, Fullscreen Mode does not give "full access" to your computer's resources. Yes, it used to; nowadays it basically minimizes other claims on resources through prioritization of Windows event handling. You can accomplish pretty much the same thing by setting the process priority to HIGH.

In the "old days" when we coded primarily with the Win32 library, we had to write a lot of code under Fullscreen Mode to provide the functionality normally provided by Windows since applications couldn't operate without that code. Nowadays, that functionality is provided whether you want it or not... Run a resource monitor in the background sometime when you're playing the game (if you have one) and you'll see what I mean.

As a "for instance", the Win32 library provided macros to handle all the various OS events (e.g., mouse clicks) that came in raw form to a Fullscreen Mode application. In Windowed mode, those events came to the application already "translated". In Fullscreen Mode, we discarded those OS events we weren't interested in (although we still had to reply to the OS that we'd received them); in Windowed mode, events were discarded automatically...

That "translation" had a lot of overhead associated with it; Fullscreen Mode applications could be significantly smaller in executable size and faster in execution speed. Windowed mode applications required less code to be written.

That's really no longer the case. As the OS has matured (and Microsoft has added a whole series of new bugs and quirks), the coding environment has changed. So, run ESO however you like...

RE: Aero... if you have up-to-date drivers, you should be getting no complaints from Aero. Check your settings for Aero and the date on your graphic drivers. The problems with Aero have been -- at least to the best of my knowledge -- resolved. Aero is a memory pig and a processor hog, but so is everything else under Windows...

Oh my God, I thought it was just my computer that did the complaining about Aero. I added some memory recently and it doesn't happen very much anymore.

    Hey, thanks for the responses!

I never did have problems with Aero, I was just wondering whether running in windowed mode gave the game access to more memory... from your explanation, @Lord_Kreegan , it sounds like it makes no difference. I still feel like the game runs more smoothly in windowed mode (with Aero enabled) than in full-screen... probably something to do with my hardware. Or something.

But yeah, thanks for the thoughtful explanation... I think I understood most of it. ^.^

    Cheers!

Also, AMD CrossfireX will not work in window mode in any application or game. It must be 100% full screen.

NVIDIA SLI will work in windowed mode, but its not optimal, and usually takes a performance hit to the multi-gpu scaling(scales better in full screen most of the time, very few titles scale well in window mode sli), which is why NVidia recommends full screen if possible, this is also why AMD never bothered to implement CrossFireX for windowed mode.

If your not using multi-gpu, then it don't really matter if you use full screen or windowed mode.

I've been having this problem too. I haven't been able to eliminate it, but turning off the transparency feature in the display theme options has definitely reduced how often I get the message. Closing the launcher seems to help too.

Eso is the only game that does this to me, so I think its specific to the game. If that helps at all.
