Some good tips here, but it really would help if the OP told us what level and alliance he is, also whether he missed the starting island/zone and went straight to the first main area for his alliance. That tends to be the main factor in players finding themselves struggling early on.

I was only lvl 10 at the time I wrote this....I was running into stuff lvl 14/15 and if I had to deal with more than one I was getting a beat down.

    Aldmeri Dominion.

I did not skip the island at the start. I went back and found a few things I had missed...

Like it was mentioned, if you don't miss out on sidequests or something, the game pretty effortlessly keeps you up to level. Between main quest, mages guild, fighters guild, all the sidequests and dwelves... and if you ever really need some level, there's still dungeons, cyrodil, and the group content like dolmen and in-world bosses before you have to resort to grining... ;)

Watch which way you're going. Usually (though not always) the main quest line for your alliance will point you in the direction you need to go. Complete quests along the way. If you wander off too far though, you could be doing quests you're not "scheduled" to do until later with npcs that are higher leveled than you.

And this may be part of my problem....I just noticed I had a quest to visit the harborage and didn't realize it. It's fairly old too so....

@brandon.coker101_ESO , I have outstanding news for you then, as those quests never expire - they will level to your current character not matter what, ever since scaling was implemented.

Unless you're sneaking past most of the mobs, just clearing the zones will put you half a zone ahead per each zone.

I don't actually know if you stop getting the fighters guide XP/count for undead/daedra if they are greyed out. Probably....

I did not. I was in Sanguine's Demesne, a L27ish Daedric Public Dungeon with my L40 and got nothing for killing the daedra in there. Well, they do count for the various categories of kills that go to the Monster Hunter Achievement, but not FG progression.

Have to 5 or less levels above the mobs you are fighting to get the full credits from killing them.
@Nestor, @newtinmpls‌ , any time you are more than 5 levels above the mobs, you will not get XP's or loot. You will however, still get end of quest XP's and rewards.

So, if possible, try to do Green quests now, Yellow and Red next, reserving greys for when you have nothing left in your log, or you need to clear space.

This isn't completely true. There are certain skill lines that will continue to advance on kills even if the victim is much lower than your level. Werewolf comes to mind. But, they are an oddity, and Fighters Guild is not one of them.

@starkerealm , none of the guild lines go by XP's at all, , actually.

Mage's Guild goes by found lorebooks and MG quests.
FG goes by daedra/undead/anchors closings and FG quests.
Undaunted goes by Dungeon achieves and pledges.

WW goes by kills, whether it's a centipede or a frost troll. Vamp is actually the only one that goes by XP's.

Lastly, Soul Magic goes by main story line only.

The individual skills still use XP's to level up, but the skill lines do not.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

That's strange. So far I've leveled close to 15 chars and every single one of them became 3-5 levels above zone's level, by the time I reached level 20.

Did you do quests in starting zones? They tend to give you those 3-5 levels I was always above the zone's?

Well, I play the full intro, meaning I start in the world at halfway through 4th level. My OCD-ish beloved who double and triple checks his maps and addons to make sure that he has not missed anything recently reported that for one of his upper level characters (I think 40-ish) by the time he got to the new zone, everything is grayed out.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Which is not at all what I was talking about. Werewolf is, so far as I'm aware, the only skill line that specifically awards XP for kills and will still award XP if you are overleveled.

There might be others, but that's the only example I can think of.

Fighter's Guild awards XP from kills, but only if you're not overleveled.

Those other examples don't award XP for kills. Mage's Guild doesn't, so it's irrelevant to the discussion. Undaunted doesn't, so it's irrelevant to the discussion. Vampire doesn't, it awards XP equal to your actual XP intake, so it's irrelevant to the discussion. If you get XP from a kill, it goes up, if you find a wayshrine, it goes up, if you kill something that's 20 levels lower than you... it does not go up. If you wolf out, and kill something that's 20 levels lower than you... Werewolf goes up by 5 points.

Be sure to turn everything white on the map. Do all World Bosses. Do all the Delves (each has a skyshard). Explore the whole map there are probably a lot of icons that you missed.

    Good luck!

In addition to Destinations, I'd add Skyshards and Lorebooks to the must have list. Those will highlight... well, Skyshards and Lorebooks on your map, so you can go out and find them.
