Most frustrating thing about the game is...LOCKPICKING

There are only 3 positions in which the tumbler can stop. (top, middle and bottom)

On simple chests you have enough time to push each tumbler all the way down,
remember where it started shaking and in a second go push it into that position.

100% accurate information. When someone told me this back in closed beta, it became beyond simple to unlock chests because it's easy to anticipate when the tumbler will start jiggling.

To make it challenging, the system needs to be redesigned so that there are more possible locations instead of just 3. As it stands right now picking an Advanced chest is just as easy as picking a Simple.

try it without sound...if you rely on the sound, you'll wait too long.

    Also, try guessing

With simple locks, which are like 90% of them, you should be able to hold the mouse button down, find out when it starts to wiggle...stare at that spot, and then try to time it right before it even gets to that spot.

Once you get that down, it should be pretty easy. I too started the game and could not get the chests...but once I figured out the above, it got easier and easier.

Holding left then releasing works fine for me, usually. Simple locks, advanced locks, master locks... opened all kinds. It takes a bit of experience knowing just when to let go I guess...

I have never even seen a master lock...
I haven't for a long time, come to think of it, maybe they became extinct. For that matter I haven't seen an 'impossible' one either, they used to be not uncommon especially when I ran my level 10s through all faction zones collecting Skyshards for skills.

You can find them again when you start a new character. When you level up, the chests go from -->impossible-->master-->hard-->intermediate-->easy

So when V10 you will only find easy and sometimes intermediate.

But even the impossibles are possible/

The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

    Ignore the sound.
    Ignore the vibration.

As has already been mentioned, there are only three positions the tumblers can go to.

If you see the vibration, you've gone too far.

Get a feel for it. Whether simple, intermediate, advanced, or master, the only difference in difficulty is the amount of time available to open the lock. Once you have a feel for the positions the tumblers can go to, even master "difficulty" locks are easy.

I've only seen one "impossible" lock on all eight of my characters. It wasn't impossible.

There are times -- I suspect due to connectivity -- where the tumblers simply "don't stick". When that happens, I just wait a bit and try again (for the connection to improve).

To date, I've found very little difference in the loot inside. The likelihood of a soul shard or blue item apparently increases, but the amount of gold and likelihood that the item you get is something you can use does not increase. The amount of XP awarded is negligible, so the only reasons I open the chests are for soul shards and for items I can deconstruct for crafting.

Good morning (Pacific time) everyone. Thanks again for all your replies and willingness to help. Last night I came across this video and the way she explains it worked for me: https://youtube.com/watch?v=OESfIoF2u18

After watching it, I did a couple of circuits around the Kenarthi's Roost beaches to practice on simple and intermediate chests. And finally, after almost a full year, I could open chests. Did quite a lot in a row. First time ever. Yay!!!!!

Just goes to prove you can find happiness in even the silliest little things if you're open to it. :D

Congrats. Lock picking was a problem for me at first, but once you learn the trick, they become quite easy to do.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I've played this game since pre-launch last year but have NEVER gotten the hang of lockpicking. I've watched video tutorials about how to lockpick in ESO and followed the instructions to the letter. I've listened for the sound, watched for the wiggle, used left mouse button, right mouse button. I can NOT get even simple chests to unlock.

If there's a secret to this damned activity, could someone please share it with me? Thanks. Grrrr...frustrating to the point of just not wanting to ever do it.

those video tutorials and the written guides for the most part do give you the information you need for lockpicking , what they do not address is the one thing that you have no control over , that being internet latency it only takes a small spike in your latency to screw up your lockpicking attempts .

I usually don't even try to get each individual tumbler on the first attempt for that tumbler. I drop the tumbler down, watch where it starts shaking, then release it and press it down again, this time knowing exactly where to stop and I nail it every time. I do this for each tumbler. So I am depressing each tumbler exactly twice. (At least that's the plan. About 50% of the time I get it on the first depression). But I go into it prepared to depress each one twice.

I can't remember the last time I wasn't able to get into a chest on the first try. Yeah, I break a lot of picks doing it this way, but they are a dime a dozen.

    Yay!!!

Soon you will get the "Open 1000 chests" achievement.

(A friend got the last couple hundred chests for that by running around Kenarthi's Roost, which is Gold zone for us. They had a lot of fun.)

Congrats Wolfenbelle! It really is one of those things that once you get it, it really is quite easy.

It reminds me of learning to roll your 'R's when studying a foreign language. For years I just thought it was impossible for me to do it and I would never be able to.

Then one day a friend was doing it easily and I got annoyed and decided to just not give up, watched a few youtube videos, practiced until I drove everyone around me crazy ('three, three, thrrreeeeeee', 'pdactice', 'pdactice', 'prrrractice') and then suddenly I did it and had that "aHAAAA" moment.

    Enjoy treasure hunting! :-D

Rejoice! With 1.6 and the Legerdemaine skill line you will be able to train a perk that increases the chance of automatically picking a lock (which by default is fairly low) - so with that you should probably be able to pick those nasty locks at last!

Personally I didn't have issues with lockpicking but I knew someone who had immense troubles with them as well, hard to please everyone here I guess since if it's too easy you could as well remove it from the game. However, as I said, soon you should get a much higher chance finally :)

And don't forget in 1.7 you will be able to buy a skeleton key in the cash shop for 9.99. Sarcastic rejoice!

I've always held the left mouse button to depress the tumbler and then right click when it wiggled. Keeping the left mouse butting down while clicking the right is what I've always believed to lock it in place. 9 times out of 10 it locks it in place and I moved to the next doing the same. I've opened simple locks all the way to master locks doing this same process. Every now and then you break a pick but I've never found one I couldn't open this way.

    Been picking locks since beta.

    Try this.

First of all, move lockpick with mouse from right to left or left to right in orderly fashion. Use your mouse button, keep it pushed until you hear that rattling sound, release and move to next. If you have less than average reaction time, try just releasing near bottom if you dont hear spund before..

What really helps me when picking hardest locks there are. Do not look on the graphic on the screen when holding mouse button to move pick down.. When sound changes, realease. It seems that while light is faster than sound, ears react faster than your eyes, this is propably leftover from some primal instinct from times when humans were just litle more than apes.

    Hopefully that helps :)

OP -- Just get a bunch of lock picks and go to your alliance's starter island and go around the shore practicing until you get the hang of it. There are tons of chests on those starter islands, usually.

If you open enough of those chests, I don't know how many it will take for you, it will become one of the easiest things to do in this game.

Yeah, it works for sure either way. It can be a little challenging opening a master lock on the first try but for the most part I getem

I wish they would put more difficult chests in the Vet areas. Personally I feel that there should never be a simple chest in a V12 zone....

LOL @ this. Lock picking is so easy. Watch the tumbler or listen for the sound variance. :) Just takes some practice the first time you are at a chest.

I disagree completely, leveling by only questing is the most frustrating.. Ive done almost every single quest in the game and I am only v 12. Lockpicking can be frustrating I agree on that.
